Indie Games completed - just need 'polish'

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Indie Games completed - just need 'polish'

Hi, just wondering how many indie devs have an application that the underlying framework is 'finished'. All your app needs is that bit of polish to make it more appealing to the masses. What I'd like to know is:

1. Percent your apps framework is finished
2. Percent your 'polish' is completed
3. The biggy - when's your deadline for finishing it ?

My apps framework is 98 percent finished, I reckon I'm 40 percent through the polishing stage. Had to call in some bigger guns for the polishing stage... As for deadline, hmmm - June 30th (07) a downloadable beta.

I'd just like to add that the polish can take just as long as the actual game or longer! ...

aste-Roid's
1. About 99% complete, been that stage for years now due to lack of time.
2. about 50% - was working on some final sprite work last night.
3. About 3 years ago, I may release it as is, and get it out my way. lol.

It's hard to really give a hard percentage, because what constitutes complete varies from person to person.

I'd say roughly:
1. 10%
2. 5%
3. 6-12 months. We're using an evolutionary software development paradigm so it'll never be truly finished.

1. Depends on how much you call the framework and how much is polish, I'd say the 'core' framework has been finished in my game for some time - all the features that were designed have been implemented and work as desired, the bits that are left I'd consider polish.

2.Not sure, character sprites are not going to change, some items/components will change and the levels are still being polished. Things like main menu I'm not worrying too much about, going for the old coin-op style interface or old console game - 'press start' 'exit' while it cycles through animations in the background is about all I'm going to do most likely.

3.No deadline, I'm not aiming on selling just on making a hopefully fun to play game that is complete.

If I had to give figures then:
1. 95%
2. 60%
3. Impossible to say.

We're using an evolutionary software development paradigm so it'll never be truly finished.

Ha ha. Me too!

I didn't know it had a name.

Actually I think a fair number of indie games are incredibly polished. Some are all polish and no game.

Well, my design is somewhere around 40% complete. That's got to count for something :P.

My framework is...well, it was at maybe 3% or so before I switched languages. Now it's back at 0%, although things should be picking up here quickly. For better or worse, the game I'm making is a long term investment - something that may take a few years to make and may take another couple years to break even, but I have faith that in the end it'll be a success both creatively and financially.

Indie games really do need polish

Current game:

1) 80%
2) 5%
3) June 1st

Basically all the remaining time is polish. I was able to get the game up and running quickly a) because I used my framework b) Uh, actually just realised I can't say why due to an NDA.

Orbicus:

1. Framework 80%
2. Polish -10%
3. September 1, 2007

Current game:
1. Framework - 98%
2. Polish - 30%
3. ~1st of May, 2007

I'm excited to see @rtur's game as he's got a great track record so far.

Heh. I've numerous games at:

* 95% framework
* 0% polish
* Release date 'never'.

They're really just stepping stones / learning experiences for my ultimate game: 5% framework, 0% polish, release date + 18 months after I find a worthy BlitzMax 3D module.

Had my first 'back order' today, although I must say I'm inclined to give the interested party ir for free in exchange for some beta testing.

I find a worthy BlitzMax 3D module.
Truevision3D.

Yeah get Truevision3D. It's awesome.

Truevision3D.

This is actually the last one on my shortlist. I'm waiting for 6.5 to become publicly available before I make a final decision. Given its long development period, I place it in the same category as the official BlitzMax 3D module: it may or may not be released any time soon. ;)
