RPG Graphics, Please!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/RPG Graphics, Please!

Hi, I don't normally like to beg but right now I have no other choice. Can some please make me RPG graphics, characters and tiles, such as the ones from FFII Advanced. I have always dreamed of working on an RPG, even a simple one. I can easily code it but my pixel art skill may take years and years to develop, which makes it very frustrating. Is there anyone out there who just loves pixel art so much that they wouldn't mind helping me. Email me at joey@....

Thank you so much!

Just rip them from FFII Advanced

Use the FF2 advanced graphics. Make the engine and a test 'level' with those graphics. If I like it. I'll do the art.

@Zenn,

Thats twice Damp has offered to help you. And I agree with him. If hes going to put the time in doing your graphics he has to be sure that your upto doing the programing, otherwise its just a waste of his time.

If you just "PlaceHold" a load of graphics and make a "sales pitch" level, stick it in the showcase and whatevr the equivelent is on "Art" sites, with download links then you have a lot better chance of getting someone willing to partner your deal.

ok.. I agree with H&K's first paragraph.. but the second will likely make someone else get to do the art.. so don't do that..
hahaha

No.. that's a good idea.

Also.. I had no idea I even offered before.. haha

that's a very very small example of something I've been fooling with. The dirt/grass tile is just a toss-a-way but it could be fooled with more to make it tile less obviously.

I would really love to work on a project like this. I think it is doable for someone to make the tools required to build an RPG like FF6.

That is how you have to start. First you build a tool that you then build the game in. The tool has all the core gameplay elements of the game. Then you fill it out as you make the game. It is way too hard to try to make maps and cutscenes with text-files and bitmaps.

So you'll end up with something like RPGmaker, only specificly designed to do your game. So with a lot less options, a custom battle system that you dump graphics and stats into to play, and little widgets to build maps and cutscenes and conversation.

I can help you design all this if you need help doing it... You just have to plan it all out. Know what you will need the tool to do, have a basic understanding of your story, so you know what 'things' have to be doable... Do characters need to be able jump or fly? Do they need to be able to break the rules of the gameworld in some respect. Say.. climb a wall in a cutscene that you can't do in the gameworld itself.

Will they need to be able to have their text change font or color. What about expression.

Do you want to have more interesting NPC AI that reacts to your actions. Might seem like too much, but it also might be really cool. If you discard an item on the street, the NPCs might pick it up.. or they might frown, and tell you not to litter. Maybe you can have a reputation, and they might run if you are scarry, or react to the equipment you have on.

I wouldn't do a lot of things like that, but some things like that can break the monotony of level grinding.

In the dungeons, will you have to solve puzzles, will there be mutliple paths? What about multiple levels you can walk on. Over a bridge, circle around, then back under the bridge.

Switches? Ground effects? Ground morphing (like on the floating island in FF6).

All this has to be done in the tool end.

Then you'll use the tool to import tiles, make NPCs and PCs and equipment. Make shops and all of those things. Make the maps and the cutscenes.

Do you have a design document? You absolutely need one for a project like this.

If all of this stuff I am saying is kinda mind-blowing and new to you. Or things you didn't think of.

E-mail me, or talk to me on AIM (dampe1983) and I'll walk you through the process. Doing all the groundwork will make coding the game a lot faster and easier.

wordlcreator can do this kind of thing

Search for "RPG Maker RTP" or similar will bring you some resource, as you can't use it commercially...

Wow, thanks a lot guys. I'll make some poor graphics, start working on the game using those graphics, and email you later to show you what I've done.

Thanks so much!!!

you don't have to get it all working, just enough so I know you can do the rest. Do the hardest things first. Also, Send me a design document if you have one... you should have one.
