If anythings bloody LATE its vista! (and its crap and doesnt work right!)

--edit--

:)
Im not enraged, or stressed out by it, i just found if odd they have the gaul to say sony were late while forcing the world to adopt a bloated, half working and albeit LATE operating system.

However on a matter of personal ethics:
Its microsoftness like this that attracted me away from windows to linux and makes my mate dave(the one who knows ali), really happy he have never purchased a game for his chipped xbox and just uses it for watching media from his PC, and my mate dave says if he ever is going to get another console it is better be PS or WII.
Or simply skip a generation :/

Wow... You seem pretty enraged by this. I wouldn't take it personally if I were you. ;)

heh not sure how thats different to some of the stunts Sony pulled near 360 launch. And Vista works really well so long as you don't mind a few games not running that great.

X-Box - the butch, manly, choice - in my opinion. Nice one Microsoft - we must stop the PS3.

Well, let's face it - who would want to buy a console (PS3) that when it sees a woman it shouts out 'Oooh, look at the hair on her' - etc.

My friends wife worked a late shift especially for the 'rush' - they sold 3.

This time around the PS3 is the gigantic brick, I like the look of the Wii best, simple and compact, hope they get the kind of games I like and the graphics in future games are at least half decent.

.post moved to first one as an edit

I used to be a Microsoft detractor. (An ex amiga 1200 user). However, I posed a question to them recently regarding distribution of a product that I've developed in BMax but have a frony end GUI for in VB6(bought under an educational license). They were very helpful( a cynic might say they can afford to be ).

I have vista, and quite enjoy using it over xp.drivers are a bit of a nightmare,i tried using nVidias BETA vista driver (to try Mini3D) and for some strange reason, my router wouldnt let me have internet access?

so i had to system restore it to get it to work again.
other that that,its been fine.

I actually lost faith in Sony a while back, when I bought a slimline PS2, i had it for 6 months, then the laser screwed up, i then read it was a common thing,so I just tossed it in the bin, harsh i know, but ive had no problems since ;-]

It really doesn't. I know any number of IT professionals who say it's debatable whether it's slightly better or slightly worse than Windows ME. It might be tolerable for a home user who happens to have a setup it likes ( but that could be said about ME too ) but for a serious OS for business users, it's really even more of a horrible mess than was suspected.

I know it doesnt, the it dept i work in are terrified of vista because when we tried a test run on one node. it caused the following problems:

- 2 machines that are BRAND new and 'vista capable' just bluescreened on first boot then crashed unrecoverably.
- had a few problems with network
- a couple of wireless network cards caused some probs
- some vital in-house software incompatable and wont run
- IE7 incompatibl with some of the document systems on the internal intranet.(IE6 / Firefox ok)
- 1 graphics card wouldnt work.

This was a test on a range of 10 brand new laptops and desktops.

Not very re-assuring was it. I think were staying with XP till the sun goes down.
If things dont improve quickly its going to be worse than the so-called millenium bug ever was :)

Anyway, i dont want to start another OS war that wasnt my intention (its all been said before)

After all, its each to their own. I still think M$ were cheeky gits tho :)

I still think M$ were cheeky gits tho :)

when are'nt they :-]

Seriously though,i'm enjoying it,and i know companies will wait,at the end of the day, migrating to a new OS/system has the potential to cause utter chaos.

you could compare it to running a bath of red-hot water to the overflow hole, you have two options, you either temporily burn your hand to get to the plug to let some water out,or you wait till it cools down.the latter is the most sensible option IMO,but then,i usually just burn my hand to get it over with ;-]

Well I'm not really into computers at all these days, can't be fussed with OS's but Vista works quite well for me and is a bit more responsive than XP even on my outdated system.

Only problems I seem to have are with dodgy software protection that should never have existed in the first place. Maybe having an ok older system has some advantages too, more chance of compatibility. Nforce chipset and Nvidia vid card, onboard sound. Ran perfectly out of the box :)

Personally im waiting for the price wars to start then when the dust settles i will buy one :)

Well, Adelaide sales were vastly different to Sydney sales going by that article. In a random Kmart by around midday there was still a line up of customers wanting PS3s... Kmart had 40 to sell and around that time there were only 2 left. People were ringing in from all over SA because the smaller stores had sold out.

Harvey Norman (Aussie electronics giant) did a stupid amount of advertising for their midnight launch which probably helped boost sales for all stores considerably =]

early sales are faster than those of its predecessor PS2.

An outright lie. PS2 sales were at least doubled this time last gen.

I like the look of the Wii best ... (hope) the graphics in future games are at least half decent.

Wii is what Wii is. You can't expect a tired horse to jump sky scrapers.

I know any number of IT professionals who say it's debatable whether it's slightly better or slightly worse than Windows ME.

They're a bunch of tossers.

but that could be said about ME too

ME blue screens when I try to install graphics drivers.

some vital in-house software incompatable and wont run

That's probably the biggest problem most businesses will face. There's tonnes of really badly written in house software out there. Anyone not expecting this problem is NOT a professional.

Wii is what Wii is. You can't expect a tired horse to jump sky scrapers.
Pff, that's like saying Blitz3D is dead. It isn't. (Okay, it is to me and various submarine game making individuals, but people continue to make great things with it to this day!)

It is true: The Wii so far has been viciously attacked by half-assed ports, visuals pulled straight from other consoles and just plain old bad graphics.
All those developers who said that they were "excited to develop for the Wii"? They're stupid. If you see a golden opportunity to develop something good, darn well do it properly y`idiots!
Games like Rayman and Mario Galaxy look great on the thing, but there is a lot of stuff that just looks like trash and should never have been made.
...Of course, that happens everywhere.

Anyway, I think it's all a bit of fun, relatively speaking. I didn't laugh, but I wasn't remotely angered. Actually, I was quite happy to learn this. It sure beats the usual way these days, which is ridiculous court battles and software patents!

Besides, I think Sony's end of the story is worse:
"Game website Kotaku reported that in Berlin, at a branch of the Saturn electronics store, 50 gamers got a free PS3 after smashing their Xbox 360 by throwing it off a wall."
Not only is it a complete waste generator (take 50 computers, burn them outside in an open fire watching the black smoke infect the air above you and then call yourself a good person), but it isn't funny either. (Oh boy, smashed plastic.)

Okay fine, Microsoft's barge probably burned piles of fuel during its little outing, but at least it had some reasonable purpose: To get that other ugly barge AWAY from that beautiful building!

They're a bunch of tossers.

No reply to that. I'm just repeating it to see whether there are any moderators left around here.

Sony and MS both suck, they both seem unaware of how international currency exchange works.

..as i said long time ago..PS3 will dominate...just sit and watch...

I agree both PS3 and Vista may end up staying afloat and becoming less shunned.

But right now, in their current states, (buginess and/or price), I have absolutley no interest in either.

That's probably the biggest problem most businesses will face. There's tonnes of really badly written in house software out there. Anyone not expecting this problem is NOT a professional.
I totally agree for the most part, but when software has survived 98,NT4,2K,XP then falls over first time on Vista you could say its probably down to a badly written, stubborn or intollarent OS, not the software's fault :)

I really hope he PS3 makes it because im hoping BLU ray wins the DVD battle and that will help a lot.

I totally agree for the most part
Isn't that an oxymoron? :P

Lol an oxywhatsit?

oh,

i get it :)

(I googled it.. Some of these are quite funny)

:P

lol @ 'Microsoft Works' :P

ROFL!

kind of a "minor disaster" :))

No reply to that. I'm just repeating it to see whether there are any moderators left around here.

And apparently there aren't.

Mods are like buses - wait for ages then three come along at once. :P

I didn't have the chance to read the original article till now, that was a hoot! (and I mean that in a good way for MS)

Sony blew it coming out the gate on the PS3. Not that MS is the big winner, it appears that will be Nintendo.

that's like saying Blitz3D is dead.

No, that's like saying Blitz3D will get a DX9 update in the future.

I'm just repeating it to see whether there are any moderators left around here.

I only insulted people behind their backs. ;]

Well, software designed for 98 has an excuse, but so far as I can tell, MS's guidelines have stated since the 2000 days that software should be writing their temp/config/user docs to the appropriate places, none of which was ever the program files directory. It's only taken MS 7 years to introduce a no-tolerance system on that.

Sony blew it coming out the gate on the PS3. Not that MS is the big winner, it appears that will be Nintendo.

How do you figure that? PS2 + PS3 sales rate is greater than any other competitor's console sales currently.

..PS3 will dominate...its just comming..

> How do you figure that? PS2 + PS3 sales rate is greater than any other competitor's console sales currently.

Fact is, nobody cares what the PS2 sales rate is anymore. The PS3 on the other hand is third among three - and that *IS* what people care about.

Fact is, nobody cares what the PS2 sales rate is anymore.

Never mind that it's making Sony more money than any other console is making for Sony's competitors - and that's even after 7 years.

> Never mind that it's making Sony more money than any other console is making for Sony's competitors - and that's even after 7 years.

PS1 used to be that too, and look how much is made for that these days. The sad truth for game consoles (and computers in general) is that yesterday's system is yesterday's news.

No, PSX is clearly yesterday's yesterday's system. PS2 will remain a major contender for at least another year, possibly up to 3ish.

Whats wrong with 'tossers' :?

He could be refering to lots of men or women frying pancakes with one hand :P

I like pancakes.

I think its cool that they gave out chairs. free chair... who can complain about that. just hope they were good chairs.

and the thing with the boat hahahahaha thats class.

Microsoft is a HUGE player, and given sales, game's and a lot of other stuff the Xbox 360 is dominating the concole scene, and the PS3 has no chance of catching it, and Sony know it, the problem for them is that Xbox360 has time under its belt and as we all know games are now getting more and more out of its power. PS3 is playing catch up.

I love the fact that MicroSoft rubbed their noses in it.

Am I a MS fan ? - you know what, I think I may well be. their OS kicks ass, their games kick ass, and their console kicks bloody ass, why hate some one just because they have the power to make buy and sell amazing hardware and software.

Stop being a M$ hating sheep and develop your own opinion of them.

Lol
Stop being a M$ hating sheep and develop your own opinion of them.
erm.. ok. Ive had over 20 Years of experience in computers (most of it MS), am a qualified network & PC service engineer, have used at some level almost every OS known to man and i dont HATE windows at all, Windows does have some good points . I think growing dislike is more appropriate.

Sheep follow the crowd, not display much independent thought (like it seems the majority of the IT industry).
If you can honestly say if you think im a 'sheep' for not choosing to be 100% windows then youre an idiot.

I think in that I have developed my 'own' opinion.

The XBox 360 isn't selling terribly well. In just a few short months Nintendo managed to ship half as many Wiis as Microsoft shipped XBox 360's all of last year. Even with Sonys somewhat unimpressive sales figures to date, by the end of the year I'll wager they'll have sold at least as well as the XBox 360 - in spite of Sony being a bunch of useless cretins.

Am I a MS fan ? - you know what, I think I may well be. their OS kicks ass
What's your frame of reference? Have you tried any of the other OSes? To the same degree you've tried a Microsoft OS? If not, then please spare us your religious rantings.

Stop being a M$ hating sheep and develop your own opinion of them.
Hello pot? This is Yavin. You're black.

Yeah your in the minority I'm afraid.

I spoke to a guy on the phone a few days ago who called for computer support, while talking to this guy he made that sorta, Man M$ sucks type of comment.

When I asked him why he felt that way, he replied, "well. they own like everything don't they, money grabbers." and this was a computer literate person on the phone, some one who should know better, but just shows you, a lot of people regardless of background just bahhh along like sheep trying to follow the current trends.

ie. lets all hate MS cos they make tons of products that we use every day.

Nothing to do with them making tons of products we use every day. Many companies make products we use every day and no one has an issue with them.
Im not in the minority (out of people who have an issue with MS) Ask and they will usually have a more intelligent answer than "well, they own everything dont they"

It does however have to do with:
-Bad security (file system permissions mainly)
-Enforced and unneccesary hardware upgrades just so the OS can munch all the extra power. (And im not talking about 'progress' upgrades)
-Horrendous past in buisness ethics.
-They were late with vista. OSX already does most of the new 'WOWs' and gnome on linux offered some cool things that XP did'nt
-Extremely bloated kernel, unneccasary memory use, average performance and extremely patronizing stupidities.
-The slow and progressive clampdown on software freedom
-Not to mention the price

The only reason MS has the power isnt because of great software, its because they were in the right place at the right time to secure their future (im refering to bill gates BUYING an operating system(DOS) for next to nothing off an associate (mabe even a friend?) and then selling it to IBM with continued licence ownership (Genius!) and raking in the billions. Now, its those billions and the coverage gained that give them the power, nothing else.

That is why they can now dictate to everyone, as everyone has become reliant on it, like a addict to heroin. I still dual boot windows XP and am happy with it; for games and B3d which at the moment, to me, is all it is good for. For everything else 'PC' i boot elsewhere.

So, answer flameducks Q and say what your point of reference is? Have you even tried any others for more than...
A quick install, say 'thats crap because i dont know what to do' and then uninstall?

I have to shoot you down.. mostly because I'm bored and this is better than doing my house work.

-Bad security (file system permissions mainly)
File permissions are fine, its not a multi user system, its single and if you want to keep your porn out of sight from your wife then learn to burn it to DVD and not hide it in a folder on your computer

-Enforced and unneccesary hardware upgrades just so the OS can munch all the extra power. (And im not talking about 'progress' upgrades)
I dont agree at all, does it hog tons of system resources, yeah a little, but for good reason. it supports an almost infinate amount of hardware anything new that hits the shelf and to manage all of that takes processor time.

And before you go barking Linux at me, compare what both support at install and then think about it for a bit.

-Horrendous past in buisness ethics.
What's Its business, not playtime, if your talking about how Bill bought a Dos OS, and then turned it into something the world used for years, how is that bad, if your talking about how he saw his first UI and then did what he could to do his own and make it the best, then again how is that bad ? Nothing he has done has not also been done by every other major player in the world. so why just single them out ?

-They were late with vista. OSX already does most of the new 'WOWs' and gnome on linux offered some cool things that XP did'nt

OSX has to deal with one set of hardware, a very limited set of hardware that is certified by Apple. this as a result free's up a lot of stuff the OS no longer needs to deal with. Allowing it to do more.

Linux on the other hand is primarily driven by the open source community contribution network, and can never rival what Windows can do, is it amazing, yes it is, is it extreamly stable yes, it is.

the problem is that its not very user friendly, and its sleack kernels and patch's that can bring a full system to its knee's don't help either, nor does that fact that its support is only ever 3rd party, add to this the huge gap in general hardware support between windows and linux and its clear why linux isnt much of a threat.

-Extremely bloated kernel, unneccasary memory use, average performance and extremely patronizing stupidities.

All of this due to the huge amounts of effort they have put into the os to make it as user friendly and safe to use as they possibly can, they cant make it 100% free of bugs, that's being naive, but its a hell of a lot more stable in the hands of average joe from down the street than Nix.

-The slow and progressive clampdown on software freedom

don't you mean software piracy ? - I have to admit, being some one who has downloaded the odd movie or the odd bit of software this one annoys me as well. but you cant fault them for wanting people to pay for what they use.

-Not to mention the price

ARGGGG - I wish I could come up with some thing here but I cant, and I have to agree, the price of Vista in the US is like a 3rd the price it is for us the UK.

To add my own comments to the end here, was it because MS were in the right place at the right time ? of course it was, but that's not how they managed to stay at the top, no one no matter how much money they have can stay in the number one software and os market for long if the product they are selling is poor under par or faulty, the customer's that matter, the business users simply wouldn't buy it. but they do, there are still more windows based servers hosting websites around the world than there are Linux, that's a fact.

To answer your question about what My background is or has been.

At one stage in my life I was, lets say interested in how operating systems worked. and how software worked.
This is what I used to run, and no, not a five second install.

1 Windows NT
1 Windows ME
1 Windows XP
1 Ubuntu / Slackware - duel boot
1 Redhat Server

Running through an old IBM Switch which I no longer have, I actually now only have

1 Windows XP
1 Ubuntu
1 Test Machine with some VM booting OS's on it.

Saves a lot of space.

Microsft isnt crap, and their security over the past few years has improved by miles, and they continue to make their product better every day, as do the other operating systems.

I am in no way an MS fanBoi, in fact I used to enjoy nothing more than picking them appart, but at some point, by doing that you come to understand why its as big as it is, and how it supports everything it does and why they have done what they have done.

Anyway. I think I just prattled on way to much for a post that was initially suppost to be just a jokingly prod at you, so I apologise for that, I tend to get away from the point some times.

My 2cent's

File permissions are fine, its not a multi user system, its single and if you want to keep your porn out of sight from your wife then learn to burn it to DVD and not hide it in a folder on your computer

I mean filesystem based permissions, not user permissions. There arent any real filesystem based permissions in windows(thats why spyware and viruses are so problematic). You run a program (even as a non admin user) it can overwrite the whole OS (vista is roumored to have some sort of protection but i thought it had failed in recent tests).

And before you go barking Linux at me, compare what both support at install and then think about it for a bit.

I never barked linux at all, it is quirky, and its certainly not ready for noobs yet, but it does have good support depending on distro. (problems tend to arise mostly with very cheap, generic/oem on the board stuff that are only really produced for windows)

I never said how they got started was 'bad' in fact thats why i put in brackets (genius!) i was just explaining the main reason why they now have the market hold. What i do object to however is monopolisation and anti-competitive behavior.

All of this due to the huge amounts of effort they have put into the os to make it as user friendly and safe to use as they possibly can, they cant make it 100% free of bugs, that's being naive, but its a hell of a lot more stable in the hands of average joe from down the street than Nix.
Google > "vista problems" press enter. Its scary. Like 'millenium bug' scary.

don't you mean software piracy ? - I have to admit, being some one who has downloaded the odd movie or the odd bit of software this one annoys me as well. but you cant fault them for wanting people to pay for what they use.
No, i mean at the rate its going no programs or more complex websites small businesses or you write yourself will even run. (worst case)

Anyway. I think I just prattled on way to much for a post that was initially suppost to be just a jokingly prod at you, so I apologise for that, I tend to get away from the point some times.
No probs :) i wasnt offended, i enjoy a good debate. As i said in the post above, each to their own, i just thought the sheep comment was a bit back2front :P

> No, PSX is clearly yesterday's yesterday's system. PS2 will remain a major contender for at least another year, possibly up to 3ish.

Which makes it a cash cow, but if they don't start selling PS3s rather then PS2s they are in trouble.

PS3s don't need to take over PS2s in sales for a couple of years yet.
