For some reason, all folders on my desktop have decided to bring up a search bar when i click them rather than open. Any ideas how to fix it?

On the subject of folders, how can you stop old folders re-appearing on the desktop after you delete them?
Here's the deal:
I'm using a PC at work. When I log on, I sometimes get a message about the PC being unable to locate the roaming profile (whatever that is) and instead is going to use the local one.
Everytime that happens, a couple of my old folders re-appear on the desktop.
These folders (which contain some of my private but old data) only appear when the above error occurs.
Since others use the PC too I'm really concerned that they'll see these folders.
I want to delete them permanenty. Any ideas?

I think only your system admins can fix that one.
Seems like there's some glitch in whatever backup system it is they're using.
If you log on from a different PC, does the problem go away?

Seems to me like a glitch with the roaming profiles your IT team have set up. Roaming profiles are essentially just your usual set of user files, ntuser.dat, prefs for everything, etc etc, except it is supposed to be stored on the server, instead of on the local computer. When you log in, the files are copied locally, when you log out, the new/changed files are copied to the server. Obviouslly if the system can't find the server copy, or your hard drive is full, or anything else that can halt a file copy operation, everything will go completely wrong, because Windows can't deal. Well, it pretends to.
Your IT guys will need to fix it up. Meanwhile, you should burn a copy of all your important files because there's a good chance fixing the problem will lose them/get them deleted in the process.

Seriously though, they shouldn't keep re-appearing unless theyre in the roaming profile, and you deleted them locally. :) (sorry for the useless post.)

Since we are talking about folders... you can't name a folder "con" (minus the quotes).
