Ideal coding time / state of mind

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Ideal coding time / state of mind

Ok what time of day is your optimal coding time?

I find it's normally after a nice meal, a good 'thinking' film, and a couple of beers, starting quite late (10pm-ish - sometimes going through to 3 or 4am). I can blitz through a ton of complex code, to the point where I've no idea how I did it the next day...

Didn't someone already ask this a couple months back?

i seem to get most coding done between midnight and 6am.

Daytime has too many distractions.

I agree with Gfk and Caff, nighttime when everyones asleep. Of course, maybe it puts me in the mood because half of my game takes place during the night. I kinda am biased, whatever it is outside is what I work on.. Weird huh?

About 3pm-6pm after I been warming up for 6 hours.

The ideal time to code, that is the time I would be the most productive, is when Im not at the computer, I am brilliant then.
As soon as I sit down infront of the thing, I want to play a game instead.

I would have to agree with H&K. I have great ideas when I'm away from the computer, but as soon as I sit down, I start chatting online and lose any chance of productivity.

The trick is to immediately start coding so that you don't get distracted, as once you start you'll be into it. Maybe set yourself a game/chat/forum as a break after a good hours work. Then keep the break to 5-10 mins only and then get back to it.

1) Click the MSN/YAHOO/IRC icon.
2) Click delete.

Now to chat you have to go through the program files. :) You stand more chance of coding!

For me, and most of you though, there are a few contacts you *need* to cohere with during your coding hours- so either keep your contact list to a minimum, or just hide yourself and damnit people, don't talk to your mates about going down the pub when you should be coding.

From experience, Grey is good at this. a chat whilst working is good. A bit of work whilst chatting is bad.

Discipline people.

Something I need more of sometimes too. :P

Right. Thats it then. Let's all expect to see some completed projects popping up left right and centre!

between 9pm (if not watching anything at same time) and 3am

First thing in the morning.

Never.

Sometimes first thing in the morning, before I have to start worrying about all the other things I gotta do that day. I can keep my mind fresh on the idea and try to work quickly before life starts to get in the way again. I think it helps when I am truly interested in the project, as then I want to work on it and put everything else aside.
