Anyone play this game? I've been casually playing it for almost a week and I'm just astounded. They took Diablo II and did it right. And they used the ODE physics engine to boot. When you slay a monster it goes into ragdoll mode which makes for really cook death sequences. I love it!
TitanQuest
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/TitanQuest I tried when it first came out, but it crashed. A lot. I guess there might be a patch or three since then, so maybe it wouldn't be too bad now. But I'm kinda enjoying Jade Empire and Resident Evil 4 ( again, but with mouselook because it's on PC :P ) at the moment, so it'll have to wait.
Yea, they took Diablo II and severely limited item enchanting too.
Yeah. They took a 7 year old (Older if you count diablo 2 as not a giant leap over diablo) gameplay model and gave it pretty 3D graphics and more limited options... That makes it 'right'.
I've played it and think it's good. I'm not a big rpg fan so not that aware of what else is out there. I liked the graphics in it but found it a bit repetitive.
I tried to play, but it crashed so much, I stopped. it seemed good from what I could see.
Mmm, I was thinking about buying this - you can get it for £9.99.
I was put off as it is not strictly a RPG - it seemed a more blatant hack'n'slash like Diablo.
I shall install the demo now and take a cheeky look at it.

I played the demo and was turned off by the cliched nature of it.
Yeh - not enough depth for me - I think it looks very nice. Probably worth a look at £9.99.
Actually, just done a 'Google' - people have already unpacked the media.
Right, think I'll buy this tomorrow.

TitanQuest is rubbish. Diablo 2 "done right" - for lack of a better term - is Dungeon Siege 2.
I didn't like Dungeon Siege 2 much.. Liked the first one pretty-ok tho.
Diablo 2 done 'right' is Ultima Online hahahaha

I played Dungeon Siege 2 also but I'm having much more fun in TQ.
Diablo 2 'done right' is Diablo 2.
DS2 was total crap... Diablo 2 done right is Diablo 2.
DS/DS2 was very disappointing. Diablo II is old and tired. TQ has the skill progression Diablo II so sorely lacked. The combinations are incredible and the graphics are top-notch.
I will say that if you only give the demo a few minutes you'll get the wrong impression. Play it for >1 hour and you'll see what I mean. I originally downloaded and played the demo about 3 months ago and played for 5 minutes and it does it no justice. I uninstalled it and wrote it off. Then my brothers and I reinstalled Diablo II and couldn't stomach the graphics. So I tried out TQ again but this time actually gave it an honest go. WOW. Love the game now.
They fixed all the crappy features in Diablo II. I hope blizzard plays TitanQuest and takes notes for Diablo III.

Sorry just saw this:
Flameduck...how can you say it's rubbish?!? The game is amazing. I'm guessing you didn't give it a decent play. It's everything Diablo II tried to be/should have been.

I've completed TQ, they tried to make up for the bland game play with pretty graphics. I prefered Diablo II with the LoD expansion.
I loved TitanQuest so much I uninstalled it the same day I bought it and failed to resell it on amazon twice.
I'm sitting here now thinking 'I forgot to buy this today'. I shall do so tomorrow.

You're probably right. I was bored out of my mind after about 2 hours of play. Tried playing with a different class, but the game was more or less the same, so I just did much the same as Perturbatio, except for the amazon thing. I'm keeping my shame in plain view. I'm predicting it will turn out to be repetetive and probably end up being boring - I found the demo boring. Still, for a 3rd of the original price and a chance at getting the media - I'll take the risk.
Tell us what you think after you play it Puki. If it isn't an abomination I might pick it up. I don't mind a little mindless hack and slashing, as long as it does it without being annoying. If it is just 'boring' I can deal with that.. Cause it is LESS boring than doing nothing.
I'm nearing the end of broodwar, and I just returned all my gamefly games.. So I have a few GC titles I haven't been able to really get into, and a bunch of games I've already beat.
So I'm due for something at least a little novel I can distract myself with.
Course.. it prolly won't run on this machine.. so I'll have to go downstairs.. so... I guess it'll have to be more than 'boring' to warrent that.

Hmm, there seems to be alot of different opinions here. There were alot of different elements in Diablo II to consider (I play it quite a bit still). Diablo II included hack-and-slash gameplay, allowed you to collect and modify weapons, and every character class had a wealth of skills to make use of. The part that interests me most is the variety of combat tactics you can use. A few things I think Diablo II lacked was that weapons could be modified, but only randomly. While you could add specific properties to socketed items, such changes were always permanent. Also, the enemies in Diablo II seemed to usually try to outnumber you; there were never any dominating monsters that you had to spend a lot of time against. I've also heard people say that the graphics in Diablo II were a bit more cartoonish compared to Diablo I; none of it was all that serious.
So, considering the things I'd like to see in Diablo II, I have been designing an RPG game of my own. The original idea is that it will be a space shooter, but to get weapons, you have to salvage parts from the ships you destroy. You'll have to collect several parts before having the right tools to build anything. I've expanded on this idea, and you'll basically be able to collect weapon components, and can swap out components to improve your weapon performance. I haven't figured out if I'll have levels for the players, though I could allow ships to level up and gain attributes.
Should be alot of fun to play, but guess I'll have to wait and see. Anyone here interested in helping out?

Sounds interesting. I'm good with conceptual things. But I wouldn't be very helpful outside of that. If you are more of a coder, I'm sure I can help you flesh out the idea. If I'm a big help you can add me to the credits. But nothing like payments for helping some chap out.
It's definitely not annoying by any means and they didn't limit it more than Diablo II. They expanded it with many more options. I played EQ, DS, Diablo I/II, and many more rpgs and TitanQuest is great hack and slash fun. The graphics are gorgeous, plenty of gear/upgrades, quests, augments to put in weapons. It's really great stuff.
I haven't seen any valid reasons to bash the game here other than maybe it's not someone favorite type of game. I personally don't like RTS games so I won't be praising Starcraft etc.

I found it at walmart today.. but there was no price on it. So I didn't buy it. I don't trust them.. They'd prolly wanna charge me $50 for it.
It's $20 at bestbuy plus they have scanners all around wal-mart where you can do price checks.
Not at THIS walmart... it has to be the worst wally-world in the country
hell.. There isn't a 24-hour walmart for 40 miles... This is the epicenter of bad walmarts... I can get some phone-pics sometime if you don't believe me.

Even without the cube recipes and rune words Diablo II item enchanting was far more superior. In TQ you can't even enchant an item with multiple enchantments. Yeah no more limited.
Look. I'm going to be honest. Item enchanting is a bonus. I'm not going to pick one game over another cause one has a lot more 'cooking'.
As long as it doesn't have big gameplay flaws that make the fighting tedious rather than repeatative, I'd prolly buy it...

For reference I completed Diablo II twice and DS 2 once - so it's not exactly because I don't like the type of game. TitanQuest just didn't bring anything new to the table, and in many instances brought much less. Oh and it annoyed me to no end that it didn't scale the aspect ratio of the screen properly. I mean come on! In what many instances did it bring much less? Can you be specific? I played the heck out of Diablo II and it appears we're both fans of this type of game. I can't fathom why you think it's not spectacular or superior to DII.
Maybe by completing DII x 2 and DS 2 you were just burned out on this type of game. /shrug

Maybe you should say what makes it BETTER.. other than graphics.. which just make it look better.

Well on of the major things that annoyed me was how item drops where totally random, and not the least geared towards what character class you where playing. Also most monsters dropped things that might as well have not dropped, because they where totally useless, and (unlike in Dungeon Siege) there was no way to immediately convert them to money, without trudging back and forth between stores - which you would do often, because the inventory was way to small and couldn't figure out how to reorganize it's contents to fit new items in it. Also there was nothing else to do, except killing and rearranging your inventory. What else was there to do in D2? Other than fight and fool with inventory items...
Character progression? I dunno. Haven't played Diablo 2 in like 10 years.
That is an impossibility.
You get a sack which expands your inventory considerably when you get to the town before Delphi. There are some features you don't see unless you put more than a couple hours into it. ;)
The random item drops are offset by the monsters being farmable. If you exit and start a new game then all the named monsters are up again, even if you've completed a quest that involves them. I really like that part. In Diablo II, once you killed a named quest monster it was permanently gone. :(
I'm actually following the storyline and doing the side quests too. It's amazing how they incorporated so much Greek/Roman mythology into it. The voice overs are superb. I'm a big Greek mythology fan so I'm getting a big kick out of it. It's like....I'm IN Clash of the Titans!!!
Also there are 3 levels of magic items. Yellow text items are your standard magic items(common), green text items are the next level up and are pretty dang nice(rare), and the blue text items are just plain uber!(very rare)
Plus, Medusa rocks! I'm at her right now. We haven't killed her yet though because my brother wants to be there for the first kill.

Sorry. I'm not really interested in a game where I have to play a crappy game for several hours before it gets marginally interesting. I simply don't have the time or patience for it. I want it all right away. That one thing that really annoys me about Rayman: Raving Rabbids. You have to "unlock" the games in single player first before you can play them in multiplayer. The person who thought that was a great idea deserves to be dragged outside in the street and shot. Repeatedly. With plungers.

That's not an offset. That's an even bigger time sink. You have to keep playing the same game over and over again until it drops something useful? Talk about a waste of time. Of course this is something you will eventually have to do, or you'll be totally gimped. Like I said, maybe playing all that DII and DS2 burned you out. I'm still having a blast, but I'm sure eventually it will get old...like all games eventually do in time.
I agree with the time sink on loot. I've killed the spider queen about 50 times now and have gotten maybe 5-6 pieces of nice green/blue gear. No game is perfect but TQ is pretty close IMO.

I second that.

I second the fact that you're making me sick, dynaman. :)
