Any UK people going to buy a PS3?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Any UK people going to buy a PS3?

I notice that the shops are filling up with Playstation 3 boxes:

They look just as bent as the console itself. I'd actually feel embarrassed to buy one. What if the shop run out of bags? - you'll have to carry it in full view of everyone.

I personally won't buy one as it looks utterly ridiculous.

GAME are delivering them to your door for 23rd March - http://www.game.co.uk/lowdown.aspx?lid=7068&cm_sp=PS3-_-merchandising-_-wfpreorderltd - but they cost £500+.

Why would someone spend £500 on one of those when you can get an X-Box 360 for £200?

So, I'd certainly welcome anyone posting a good reason as to why they are going to buy one. In fact, does anyone actually like the look of them?

What I find most shocking is that Game are bundling them with HD TVs for £1226.97 and £1526.97. I've got money to burn but I wouldn't blow £1.5K on something that bent.

So, come along - who is going to buy one?

Impulse buyers who just got their paychecks. Just like in the US.

If it comes down in price below £250, and it plays GTA4, I'll buy one.

Just like Microsoft with Vista, there seems to be this assumption that UK consumers will spend more than the rest of the world on gadgets. Which is probably true, considering the level of personal debt in the UK.

£500 on a console and then £50 a game, not a chance. Granted you can buy the games for around £10 cheaper online. It's a ridiculous price.

If they were £200 and had really good games then I'd probably get one to replace my PS2. I'm happy to sit back and wait till around Christmas and then see what the game selection / price is like for XBox360, PS3 and Wii, but as things stand at the moment I'd probably get more use out of a Wii.

Why would someone spend £500 on one of those when you can get an X-Box 360 for £200?
You might already have a 360.
This initial pricing is for the propeler heads. People with more money than patience

The other day I spoke with my cousins over in gay Paris, and some of them are planning on getting one. They apparently make more money than I do.

it'll take a few years for the games to be significantly better than the 360 one's so I'll give it till then, and the price will have dropped by then too

actually what am I saying, I don't own a 360! I play on my modded xbox and my PC!!!

You might already have a 360.
The point still stands. If you already have an XBox 360, there's even less of a reason to get a PS3, when you can get both good 360 games and 8 mediocre ones for the same price as the PS3.

Besides, you already know the only games worth getting for the PS3 is going to be GTA4 (and its derivatives) - this time around, you can get it for Microsofts console as well.

it'll take a few years for the games to be significantly better than the 360 one's
If by "few years" you mean "forever" then sure.

You might already have a 360.

But you are less likly to buy a 360

My PS3 is on pre-order, and I already have Virtua Fighter 5 sitting on my shelf for a week or so now, waiting eagerly. Sure, it's expensive, and I wouldn't say it's worth buying for the price at the moment, but hey. :)

People need to relax, people exaggerated in the same way when the PS2 launched.

People need to relax, people exaggerated in the same way when the PS2 launched.
No they didn't. The PS2 had the most successful launch ever, with the possible exception of the Wii.

It had everything. Games worth playing, backwards compatibility that didn't suck, cheaper than a car, the list goes on.

The guy in GAME tried to assure me that the PS3 price tag of £425 (no games) is the same price the PS2 was selling for when it first came out. :/

TBH, I can't remember the PS2 price when it was first released, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't that high.

Games worth playing, backwards compatibility that didn't suck

That's the same thing twice, because there were certainly no must-have PS2 games for an absolute age. The PS2 had one of the most underwhelming launches in living memory and its initial success came directly from its prowess as a DVD player. Which suggests that the vital question this time around might well be "Is Blue-Ray going to act as a similar crutch for the PS3?"

Doubt it.

The UK launch price for PS2 was £300, plus £30 for a memory card. Not as much as the PS3.

it'll take a few years for the games to be significantly better than the 360 one's

Actually, it may even be by the end of this year. The FFXIII may be out sometimes next year, but I'm actually kinda interested in checkin out MSGS4, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Tekken 6, and of course what every everyone is waiting to hate on, Killzone 2 or 3 or whatever its gonna be called. I've only played the demo of Motorstorm but its definately one of the best looking racers i've seen, of course the demolition aspect was pretty fun also. Now if they can only get that price down a few hundred dollars.....

When comparing the PS3 with the Xbox 360 you have to take into account
Xbox 360 premium £280. (only 20 gig hard drive)
HD-dvd drive £120.
Thats £400.
PS3 £425 with 60 gig drive.
So if you take into account updating the hard drive on the 360 the PS3 would work out cheaper.

As a pure basic console the 360 is cheaper. If you are considering high def/blue-ray as well( which in a couple of years we will proberly all have)then the PS3 is the one to go for.

cheaper than a car
hahahahahaha

not my car!

I plan on getting one by the time it gets its price drop in late 08/09, FF13 should be out slightly before then anyway. Hopefully by then they'll have fixed their emulator too, which if you ask me is still in beta.

The PS2 had the most successful launch ever, with the possible exception of the Wii.

Oh please, the Wii isn't even in the same ball field. The SNES is a better match for the PS2 in initial sales.

The guy in GAME tried to assure me that the PS3 price tag of £425 (no games) is the same price the PS2 was selling for when it first came out. :/

Slapped him, did you? I can't stand idiot sales reps. I don't know what that converts to, but in Aus the PS2 went for $700 initially, whereas the PS3 will be going for closer to (if not over) $1000. I would think that translates similarly to the rest of the world too.

there were certainly no must-have PS2 games for an absolute age.

Well, you missed out on SSX, but that's about it.

Which suggests that the vital question this time around might well be "Is Blue-Ray going to act as a similar crutch for the PS3?"

Well, it is the cheapest BluRay player on the market, but that's not saying much I suppose. I don't think people are viewing BluRay or HDDVD in the same way as they did DVDs though.

maybe, but only when it's better value and I already own a Wii.

I already own a Wii.
*snigger*

You should just turn your calculator upside down and write 5318008 repeatedly on it. More entertaining than a Wii. :)

The wii is the most popular console ever in my house.

It's likely that i'll go for a ps3 once a rev2 is available...(oops i'm not uk)

rev2 = the one with crappy backward compatibility?

I guess you mean the one without the ps2 chip, right? I think this was the right decision in order to lower the manufacturing costs and time after time the software emulation will become better and even if not i don't care as i don't own a single ps2 title.

I was more after a real rev2 which is smaller, a little bit cheaper, comes with a better design and maybe rumble dumble due to their agreement with immersion (as long as i don't have to swap batteries).

I personally think that the xna framework with the game creator club from Microsoft is a smart move, almost getting me to buy a xbox 360.

I'll wait for a similar move by Sony before considering buying it (yeah I know the linux distro that runs on it, but that's not even close to what Microsoft did, furthermore I find it almost insulting with all the limitations it has).

I won't even consider buying either an Xbox360 or a PS3 until the prices become sensible. Perhaps I'll pick up a cheap PS3 near the end of its life cycle - that's what I usually do when I buy a console. What's the point in paying crazy prices for a console that hardly has any decent (or released, for that matter) games?

XBox 360 has many decent titles -.-

Lots of people will buy a PS3, just not until it cost a reasonable price and has some good game. Of course there are always lots of people with more money than sense so they'll still shift a few PS3's soon.

I'm very happy with my Wii.

The is actually an Xbox 360 in the other room (my brother owns it) and I have yet to even want to play it... I think I played the origional Xbox 3 times.

I haven't touched my Ps2 since I got the Wii.. That won't last forever. I'm just waiting for the last few good ps2 games to come out... or to come into my house.

All in all.. I'm unsatisfied with the Wii games that are out... Twilight Princess is great. But just as great on the game cube. I've been using the Wii to play gamecube games I couldn't play before.. Since I never owned a cube.

I'm looking forward to Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Galaxy. And a good number of other future titles.

However. Nothing in the Ps3 line-up interests me. With the soul exception of Final Fantasy 13. But that isn't worth buying the console.

Considering I bought the ps2 for FFX (And ff9, ff8, and ff7), you can understand how big a deal it is that I'm not interested in the Ps3.

All in all, I think bigger-and-better is not the way to go. It is far to expensive for everyone, and further limits the crunch on creativity in the industry.

No really interesting new games are being created... They all seem more like movie-titles than games... and it all has been done before... prolly better.

I can't tell you how upsetting it is too see downgrades in the name of better graphics.

Less modes, less objects and items, less levels. Or almost as bad, no increase in any of these things.... If you are going to remake the same cookie-cutter FPS as last time.. at least make it longer, add in more weapons, give me some more play-modes...

I mean... You have a game like Time Splitters on the gamecube 50 years ago.. and every FPS since still has the same 3 Deathmatch, capture the flag, team-death match combos as the last games...

I'm just tired of it. I'm tired of only getting fancy new graphics... Gameplay hasn't evolved much in the last 5 years... and hasn't at all on the consoles in the last 3... With a handful of exceptions.

Where is all the creative ideas from 1996-9? Did all the people behind games like Starcraft, Ocarina of Time, and Half-life just die?

Speaking of Ocarina of time... I'm gonna go play it on my Wii now... In a higher res, and ... inexplicably, with faster vertical climbing.

All in all.. I'm unsatisfied with the Wii games that are out...

I agree with you. But dude, you need to get Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil 4. Those are about the only two games I've been playing on the Wii - and they're not even Wii games! Great great stuff...

With the soul exception of Final Fantasy 13. But that isn't worth buying the console.

But would you rather spend a few hundred $$$ to get a good enough graphics card to play it on....I guess... the PC?

I got a game cube recently....(12 months ago) Pikmin's cool - get a PS3, yeah sure in about 4 years time. PS2 has still got plenty of mileage in it - I tend to dip my toe into games these days.

The eye candy is unavoidable - granted, but 500 quid. Daylight robbery.

@puki - £1226 & 1526 bundled with HDTV.... thats mental.

I was more after a real rev2 which is ... a little bit cheaper,

Actually, in an incredibly bad move, Sony have stated that this will NOT be lowering the retail price of the console (just their production costs... = more profit, assuming anyone buys it)

yeah I know the linux distro that runs on it, but that's not even close to what Microsoft did,

Complete freedom is somehow overshadowed by a costly and limited environment?

furthermore I find it almost insulting with all the limitations it has

The only 'limitation' it has is that no one has written a driver that takes control of nVidia's 3D hardware - but you really think it will stay that way forever? A friend of mine has already accessed that hardware directly through Linux...

It's kind of funny that some people blame sony for optimizing their production costs and so reduce their losses but on the other side don't mind that Nintendo sells a system with which they seem to make a profit due to the cheap components inside.

Because the Wii doesn't cost £500? Maybe it's because people are accustomed to newer revisions being better, not worse than their predecessors. Sony has intentionally and unnecessarily used over-priced and unproven hardware (Blu-Ray drives and Cell processors to name a few). They have created a product with no interesting games or utilities, that appeals only to a very narrow niche of technophiles.

Sony don't want bigger profits - they want control. If they wanted profits, they wouldn't have run lik-sang out of business.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me because the ps3 is for a different audience. You pay more and you get more. If you need those features then the price isn't expensive (i'm refering to the price in germany, uk seems to be a joke on his own). If you don't need them, go for another console. Doesn't sound this complicate to me. Secondly you have no idea if you think that Nintendo doesn't want to be in control. They all want to be, no matter if it's Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony.

Oh and don't forget Apple here for the future...

Sony don't want bigger profits - they want control.

(I could be wrong, but i'm sure deep down inside, Nintendo and Microsoft want control also...but don't let anyone else know)

Secondly you have no idea if you think that Nintendo doesn't want to be in control.
I'm not exactly sure what everyone is talking about when speaking of 'control', but if you mean 'sell lots of consoles and games in order to make lots of lovely money', then you're probably right. I don't see any problem with that.

(I could be wrong, but i'm sure deep down inside, Nintendo and Microsoft want control also...but don't let anyone else know)
I didn't say they didn't. But you won't see Microsoft (or Nintendo or Apple) laying lawsuits on EB Games driving them out of business.

mean 'sell lots of consoles and games in order to make lots of lovely money', then you're probably right.
What Sony is doing is the exact opposite. If they where only interesting in selling units, they wouldn't care less whether some company bought Japanese Consoles and games, and sold them to people in Europe. You don't see any of the other mayor console players being this hostile towards people who want to play imported games.

you won't see Microsoft (or Nintendo or Apple) laying lawsuits on EB Games driving them out of business.

No, but they did Lik Sang. It was only Sony that Lik Sang blamed.

No, but they did Lik Sang. It was only Sony that Lik Sang blamed.
I don't know the story behind Lik Sang's demise but, if others were culpable as well, why did they just blame Sony?

Not sure on the finer details, but it may have been a combination of Sony being the straw that broke the camel's back (ie the most recent/last ones), Sony may have sued them more often than other companies or Lik Sang might simply not like the PS3 compared to Wii. But that's all guesswork. I'd figure the former guess is more likely than the latter two.

Lik Sang blamed Sony because it was sony that kept sueing them for selling legally bought playstation goods.

I'm not a UK person, but I'm going to buy the PS3 at some point!
Allready got PS1 and PS2

Lik Sang blamed Sony because it was sony that kept sueing them for selling legally bought playstation goods.

Like I said, it wasn't only Sony.

Lik Sang blamed Sony because it was sony that kept sueing them for selling legally bought playstation goods.
yea yea

If I go to Amsterdam and get some "legally bought" grass, I cannot sell it through the post to the UK. (Or wines or spirits)
And if I buy somthing that says in BIG LETTERS, not for resale outside the US and sell it in France, its illeagal.

Lik Sang was providing a valuable, but ILLEAGAL service. To make a profit. The way some poeple go on you would think it was a charitable insitution.

If I go to Amsterdam and get some "legally bought" grass, I cannot sell it through the post to the UK.
That's because Cannabis is a controlled substance. Video games aren't. Yet.

And if I buy somthing that says in BIG LETTERS, not for resale outside the US and sell it in France, its illeagal.
But it's not illegal to sell it in the US, then ship it to France, unless export restrictions apply (you're buying weapons or ammunition). It's called Importing and Exporting, and it happens all the time.

Lik Suk was providing a valuable, but ILLEAGAL service.
No it wasn't. There is no law in my country that prohibits me from buying hardware or software in Japan or Hong Kong, provided it is approved by the regulating bodies. For example a friend of mine prefers playing Final Fantasy games on his Japanese PS2, because the English voice acting is absolutely horrible. This is perfectly legal. It is the same as buying a game in Japan and bringing it back home, only without the expensive trip to Japan.

Sure, when you're selling business to business other rules may apply, but Lik-Sang was to my knowledge selling exlusively to private individuals.

Lik Sang was providing a valuable, but ILLEAGAL service.

No it wasn't.
err, ok. I suppose thats why Lik-Sang beat sony in the court cases. Oh wait

From lik sangs own page.

Hong Kong, October 24th of 2006 - Lik-Sang.com, the popular gaming retailer from Hong Kong, has today announced that it is forced to close down due to multiple legal actions brought against it by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang's sales of PSP consoles unlawful

I'll be buying a PS3 at some point this year. It can't be true that Sony won't lower the price as they can't keep it at its current price tag forever so I think eventually it will go down in price and more people will be able to afford one.

I'll probably get a PS3 at some point.... like 2011 (;-)

I'll prolly get a PS3 when... nah, I doubt I'll ever get one. :P

LMAO.... yeah - by 2011 there'll probably be something thats 2-3 years old that whoops PS3 for half the price..... like the 2nd hand ninty 2009... (;-)

Video games aren't. Yet.

They are in Aus.

It can't be true that Sony won't lower the price as they can't keep it at its current price tag forever

True. But it sure as hell won't be this year. Late 08 at the best, expect 09.

I suppose thats why Lik-Sang beat sony in the court cases.
Yes, because we all know that the courts are infallible. Besides which, I fail to see how a British court has jurisdiction over Hong Kong (aka. The Peoples Republic of China) and Denmark.

They are in Aus.
Stop voting for Howard then. :o>

I fail to see how a British court has jurisdiction over Hong Kong (aka. The Peoples Republic of China) and Denmark.
It doesnt have jurisdiction over China. And Link-Sang could have refused to pay the fine, and there would have been nothing Sony could have done. Hence it wasnt sonies fault. However as Hong Kong exists on the market principle, China would probably not wanted to have seemed to be supporting a break in international trade law.

and Denmark
Well, this is a bit of a doudious one. Because it wasnt UK law that the UK high court was looking at. In some ways I agree with you, and I would be annoyed if the Danish High court (what ever its called) started passing laws. But it didnt pass a law, all that happend was that The UK court looked at a European Law, (well an international Law excepted by europe), and said if it thought Lik-Sang had broken it or not. If he had wanted to appeal, I suppose he could have appealed in any EU Members courts.

Stop voting for Howard then. :o>

I'm not damnit!!! It's the freakin imbeciles that live around me <sobs> He had a good first term, but Aus has gone downhill ever since. He should never have lasted more than 3 years...
