TFT screen - stuck pixel - is that normal???

My nice new HannsG TFT developed a single pixel that was stuck with the blue at full, so on a dark background there was one glowing blue pixel, on a white background it was invisible.

It was annoying so I tried tapping the screen and it's gone now - is that normal for these TFT screens????

Yep. My Sony 15" came with a stuck ( red ) pixel which just magically went away after a week or two. There are also software solutions which can fix stuck pixels. Not always, but sometimes.

Most if not all TFT manufacturers have a 'dead pixel policy' which basically means you don't get a refund/exchange unless there X number of pixels within Y proximity of each other.

I have one on my HP monitor, and its a yellow pixel. But its right at the very edge of the screen, don't even notice it any more.

Oh good, I was a bit peeved at first but I thought there was something about exchange of monitors needing a certain number of dead pixels.

Anyway, it's great to finally find a piece of PC hardware that actually does fix itself when you thump it...it's never worked for me before, especially that harddrive that I kicked.... :(

Yes. Unfortunate, but normal.

If you read the small print you'll find that the majority of manufactueres will not consider this "defective", and depending on the make/model it may not qualify for a return unless you have more than a certain number of stuck pixels. The only one I can think of that will doa return based on a single bad pixel is Phillips, and even then just in Europe. Most brands require at least 4 bad pixels, and the no-name budget brands won't even talk to you unless you have *dozens* of bad pixels... This is why it's a good idea to stick with the name brand screens, or get one from a store that has a no-hassle return policy. (You have much less choice when you get your screen from a department store, but it's a *whole* lot easier to deal with in case there's any problems)

Any minor defects can be really anoying -- consider yourself lucky that you were able to flick it and make it go away. My current 19" LCD had a green pixel pop up that went away by flicking it. My previous 17" had one that was permanently stuck on red, right smack in the center of the screen, no matter what I did. Just had to put up with it. :-?
When using the windows GUI it was near invisible, but it can be extremely distracting when playing an dark game or when watching a DVD.

Depending on what the problem is, there is another possible fix -- having your screen cycle through red-green-blue very fast for an extended time can sometimes unlodge stuck pixels as well. If neither flicking it nor the color cycling works, then there isn't much else you can try.

I heard that tapping the screen on the blue dot could remove it. I never tried it so........

This is why I will continue to stay with my 19' iiyama CRT.

My brother wouldn't listen to me about these TFT's suffering pixel failure and stuck pixels and 4 TFT monitors later he's done the right thing and bought a CRT monitor

They're not so bad these days. I boguht a value 19" Acer screen a couple of years ago, it had ONE dead pixel. the rules behind faulty screens seems to be relaxing now though- a single pixel is still worth checking.

my NEC VERSA series notebook developed Bright Red pixel smack in the middle, it faded in and out as you move the lid back and forward

Either I'm extremely lucky or dead/stuck pixels are pretty rare, because (touch wood) the only thing I've ever had with one was my GBA SP. It has a bright red pixel stuck in the middle of the screen. Luckily the DS had just come out by then.

If you live in the UK no dead pixel policy can affect your statutory rights unless it is mentioned or shown to you before purchase. This means unless you were told otherwise before purchase they must fix, replace or refund, your choice, any display that has stuck or dead pixels, or that develops dead pixels at anytime during the life of the product. Unfortunately that last bit doesn't mean you're covered for life, it just means an industry accepted amount of time, which is usually only a year for technology products.

My laptop monitor is apparently rather sensitive to heat. If I leave the lid down while the laptop is powered on, it will get a lot of bright pixels. They go away when the screen cools down tho'. I would say defective pixels aren't normal, but they're not uncommon. My mobile phone has the pixel error from hell. In 2 months I won't be able to even see the screen any more.

Haven't seen any dead pixels on my 32" JVC yet, nor on my 15.4" Dell Inspiron screen. Most TFTs in last generations do have this defect at a rate or two. I've had plenty of dark scenes and bright, and haven't noticed this yet... I would notice it with a blank screen, but I haven't seen ANYTHING like this.

I had been looking at an annoying green pixel in the upper half of my TV for the last 6 months, but after tapping it twice, it wen't away and haven't come back.

Tapping the pixel has never worked for me before.

My DS had a stuck pixel when I bought it at launch, I just took it back and got a different one. My PSP has one too, in the top left. Completely unnoticeable.

I went to CompUSA several months ago to buy a TFT monitor by ViewSonic. I was pretty concerned about getting a dead pixel so I asked the tech if he would test the monitor for me to make sure there was no dead pixels. Well, 5 monitors and 5 dead pixels later...I left the store empty handed. :(

Viewsonics are very nice monitors. A little more expensive than some brands, but they're very nice screens. If you can find a local retailer with a generous returns policy ( as was suggested earlier ) that's often the best way to buy TFT's. It's what I did. I returned two faulty Acer's and then got a beautiful Samsung instead. They never had a problem.

I've never experienced dead or always turned on pixels on my two sony TFTs so far. Great value if you take into account how long they work properly.

my PSP has about 4-5 dead pixels but they're so small you don't notice it anymore.

what you DO notice is all the dust that got inside the thing when I had to replace the screen after sitting on it...

my samsung has been brilliant, no problems with it since day one. And I held off buying a LCD monitor for years because of pixel and refresh rate problems too.

The blue pixel hasn't returned yet, so fingers crossed it'll be OK.

Can you even buy CRTs any more? Dabs sold just one when I was looking to order my TFT screen last month, and PC World had none at all.

anyone knows of any software to get rid of dead pixels, I have one red one and one pink one on me laptop (these vanish on bright colours but show up when the screen is black).

I think dell's policy is a single dead pixel in the center area of the screen is cause for replacement... if it's on the edges there has to be more than 2 in a quadrant (or something like that) to be eligible for replacement.

I've had 3 dell laptops and have never had a dead pixel... Nor have I had a dead pixel on my dell 24" monitor. I DID have a few dead pixels on my dell 30" tv. Got rid of that tho cuz I never used it.

I've never had any dead pixel problems, but the Dell PC screens at my college kept on blacking out. It was a problem with the cord connection to the unit, you had to wiggle it to get it to come back on. Very annoying. Sometimes the cords were so bad / worn that they'd have to be just right or you wouldn't have anything. And when they came back on, you got their logo, "display perfection". Suuuure...

I've had a stuck blue pixel on my Sony HS75P TXT for several months now.
I tapped the screen and its disappeared.

..so far my Sony HS95P working just fine...but if got some dead pixies, I'll change it for new one..hey its 3 years warranty..hehehehe

That's such BS. If a pixel doesn't work, the product is broken. Monitors are the only thing I won't order online.

You can return stuff to a store for no reason at all.

Yep, I took 3 Amega 1200's back because the plastic case didnt have a uniform colour. (Well I took one back, and only accepted the third one they offered as replacement)

This was after the woman in the shop had tried to insist that if there was a callout garentee they didnt have to replace it. And I bet you loads of people less beligerant than I am would have accepted that.

I will never again buy a TFT in a shop. Buying online=14 day return right without reason. Buying in a shop=bad luck :(
And there's no good way to detect a dead pixel immediately without proper software installed. I hope that my monitor dies within the next 2 years, so I could send it in for warranty.

Um... Open command prompt -> ALT-Enter and you have a full-screen black box on which any white, red, green or blue pixel stand out.

Open a full-screen Notepad for a white background to view black pixels.
