Recommended Free Screen Grabber
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Recommended Free Screen Grabber
Can anyone recommend a free screen grabber that can capture still pictures and movies? I`ve tried a few but they all seem pants. I really only need to capture portions of the screen and not the whole thing too.
Jason.
Gimp can do timed screencapture but not video. You can crop the resulting image too obviously.
Thanks. PaintShopPro can actually do the screen grabbing too. Perhaps what I should have said is that I need the program to grab a sequence of frames, like a movie, but export them as single frames without having to grab one by one.
Jason.
VirtualDub can save a video sequence as a series of frames for ya.
Regarding screen grabbing, all I use here is Fraps for means of use in games. Although it isn't free for video-capturing.
(trial only allows 30sec of footage and includes a watermark)
Irfanview can capture whatevers on your desktop at timed intervals... not so sure about grabbing portions of the screen though.
Fraps 2 does both video (with sound) and still images.
I used VirtualDub a while ago - it's powerful. If it's your own game, you should be able to write some code to output each frame...
FastStone is pretty neat, they are both free; there's the stand alone grabber, or the browser with one built in. I actually use both as they both have their strengths, and times when they are the best choice.
faststone.org if I remember correctly. Browser can even handle raw images from digital cameras.
Remarkable for freeware. It might go payware one day, so grabbing one or both sooner is a whole lot smarter than later. Assuming they don't charge like a wounded bull, then I for one would be happy to pay for it should that happen too. I don't say that too often either.
CamStudio may be worth a look for capturing video.
It's great and totally free.
