Programmer Personality Test

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Programmer Personality Test

Seems like an interesting little test:
http://www.doolwind.com/index.php?page=11

I got "DHSB" which sounds about right for me. Possible results are:

Doer.
You are very quick at getting tasks done. You believe the outcome is the most important part of a task and the faster you can reach that outcome the better. After all, time is money.

Planner.
You may be slow, but you'll usually find the best solution. If something's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

---

Low level.
You're from the old school of programming and believe that you should have an intimate relationship with the computer. You don't mind juggling registers around and spending hours getting a 5% performance increase in an algorithm.

High level.
The world is made up of objects and components, you should create your programs in the same way.

---

Solo situation.
The best way to program is by yourself. There's no communication problems, you know every part of the code allowing you to write the best programs possible.

Team.
A good group is better than the sum of it's parts. The only thing better than a genius programmer is a cohesive group of genius programmers.

---

Conservative programmer.
The less code you write, the less chance there is of it containing a bug. You write short and to the point code that gets the job done efficiently.

liBeral programmer.
Programming is a complex task and you should use white space and comments as freely as possible to help simplify the task. We're not writing on paper anymore so we can take up as much room as we need.

PHTC here, though it's a little tricky. This test leaves out
context, which I think is essential.

I love working with objects and high level code in general,
but I often tinker and optimize with low-level junk as best I
can if it means a performance gain.

And it's completely arbitrary too:

Who is a 'better' programmer?
* Someone who went to university/college and has at least a masters in their field. They should read as many books on a subject as they can find before starting on it.
* Someone who has been coding since they were 5 and simply goes by raw talent alone.

Not everyone is nearly as religious about their prejudices as this test assumes.

I got DHSC. I don't agree with the S bit, but the questions where a bit naff.

DLSC and proud to be one! :)

Barney

I got DLSC.

However, I think the test is bent.

This is not a joke test...

It most certainly is a joke test and I don't like it.

A few stupid questions, like choosing between those 2 pieces o' code.. :P

DLSC here.

Though, I'm not sure how it come up with L - while I don't mind low level programming, I am more of do stuff in high level as long as it is good enough.

DLSB

Although I'm not too fond of low level programming so I don't think I should have got that.

DLTC.

That test was pretty bad though- for instance, I'd like to manage memory but not use C++ ora java/net programming language :P

I felt my power removed when max was released with GC. I believe it should be up to ME to clean up the mess I left behind

Still it's come in handy in the end, so meh :)

PLSB here.

@Cygnus - you know you can still have manual GC in Max if you want ;o)

DLSC!
thats good!

I'm not doing that. Most of the questions are just plain dumb. :/

Also scored "DHSB".

PHSB But some of the questions were ambiguous and needed comments ;P

DLSC

Maybe I read the question on Obejects / functions wrong. I avoid low level programming where possible

I got DLSB, which I'd say is about right for me.

PHTB

I agree about some of the questions being out of context and sometimes extreme. But that's the way that questions are on a Myers-Briggs type test (which this is stated to be based on):

Do you more often:
1) Accept things as they are
2) Want to change them

In deciding something important, which do you trust more:
1) Your heart
2) Your head

Those tests usually ask several dozen questions, though, rather than just one dozen, so the total outcome isn't overly influenced by the answer to any one ambiguous question. The idea, I think, is to eliminate context and get what you'd prefer to do.

Despite any shortcomings, I thought it interesting that this guy is trying to assess programmer personality type along the lines of a widely-used psychological test.

Breakdown of the 19 results above:

Doer 74% / Planner 26%
Low level 63% / High level 37%
Solo 79% / Team 21%
Conservative 58% / liBeral 42%

PLSB here....

'course as already said, the questions were a bit.....shall we say, obvious as to what results they will create in the end.

I quite liked that other test posted on here a year or so ago that defined your personality as a file extension....I was a DLL!

DHSB, which I agree with entirely. In fact, now that I've got the results, I'd have been surprised if they'd been anything else.

Yes, the Myers-Briggs test that this is based on is much
much more accurate.

A buddy of mine had a book with the test in it. He made me
take it once. I did, I turned out to be an INTP

That's when it got creepy; the book proceeded to describe my
childhood, my life goals, my family to me - all with crazy accuracy.

I now have a strong respect for Mr Myers and Mr Briggs, but
not this programmers test, sorry.

DLSB

The programmer of this test scored an LAZY.

It's pretty easy to write a "personality assessment algorithm" based on black and white assumptions.

I'm somewhere between a PHTB and a PHTC if I take into account that every question asked is not assuming that a good developer will alter his/her style depending upon the the complexity and requirements of the application they are writing.

Mine was completely wrong I definatly am a Liberal Programmer but I'm not really a 'Doer' because some things
I don't know how to do, or run into errors when coding.

PHSC.

I did this thing to tell me what I already knew about myself because I was bored and curious?

I didn't think programmers had personalities ;-)

... DHSB :-p

Zing!

I wasn't intelligent enough to answer the questions.

DLSB, which is mostly in direct contrast to the actual answers I gave.

PLSC! Damn straight. :D
