Why not go and get a google page for free? 100Mb file space. How hard could that be?

Gav. Google ads have made many many sites free to use. They have made many sites capable of bringing really rich new content, and they have done the 'right' thing by making the few who can pay, pay for the masses that can't.

They are also non-flashy, text, and quick-loading.

Honestly... would you rather pay to search? or to get maps? or to read penny arcade?

Besides. You could host the file on google, then link to it somewhere else. Let google pay for the bandwidth. haha.

I'm unsure how they feel about that. And if like geocities, they block downloads of things that don't come off a page they host.
