The origin of the term may be the indian tea wars, today celebrated as the "indipendence day" - as indians disallowed english companies to deal with indian tea, other than from an offshore rock named honkkong, indie games programmers disallow certain business men to make big profits from their products. Really. :-°

AAA games are those that are consistently well received by reviewers. Basically it's the top 2% of all video games. While it's true these games often have comparatively large budgets, it is not a requirement. Darwinia for example is a AAA game with presumably a modest budget, where as Driv3r is pants (and received horrible reviews, despite Atari bribing everyone and their mothers), although I'm quite sure it's budget was several orders of magnitude larger than Darwinia.
