Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Soccer Cards V4.1 Discussion Thread

Hi,

I am moving/starting this topic thread for anyone interested in disscussing their team's trials and tribulations in the freeware Blitz game Soccer Cards V4.1

If you haven't already got your copy, you can do so at: www.megaupload.com/?d=CIOY28J8www.megaupload.com/?d=CIOY28J8

The downlaod also includes the three Amiga versions.

To get the ball rolling, so to speak.

I have played 54 seasons thus far, but I have never reached the English domestic cup final ... my friends between them have got there 3 times, but not won the final.

I reached the English Championship division in about 7 seasons, and I've since bobbed about between the Premier and Champsionship division.

I once managed to reach the Champions League - that was really exciting, but after a great start I did not qualify for the final ... things went a bit pare shapped!

I must say, I was certain I was going to take Plymouth Argyle to the FA Cup Final ... but I had both my goals rulled offside, and I lost the match 1-0 :(

As for the International Edition - I just took England to the Semi Finals of the World Cup... best I've ever done in that edition.

Sure look forward to hearing from you guys soon

I had a quick go - it was okay. However, to be honest, I play Football Manager 2007 nearly every night and no other football game can probably sway me from playing FM2007 most nights. Plus I can cheat with FM2007.

It took me 7 seasons to get promoted, and then in my 8th season I was relegated back down. That really dented my enthusiasm, 'cos it took so long to get there!

However, it's the kind of game that I may dip into for 15 minutes here and there, so it stays installed and I'm glad Blitz is Kool released it. Actually, I think I'll have a stab at the international Edition next.

I was an avid follower of Championship Manager (now Football Manager) back on the Amiga (actually, the first one I got hooked on was the very first Atari ST version!), but as it got more and more complex I found it was taking far too much time - I could do 3 or 4 seasons on the Amiga version, in the time it took me to do just one on the later PC versions. I did try the half-season FM2006 demo, but again found it taking way too long.

That's a good point, Avon.

First, I doubt you can compare a game written by a hobby programmer to one written by a team of paid proffesional games writers, each of whom are given specific tasks on the project, like music, graphics, 3D things etc.

But to your point there Avon about season lengths.

One aspect of Soccer Cards which I hoped players would find appealing are the smaller tables and thus smaller seasons. You can play a whole season in around 30 minutes.

Also, because of the smaller tables, if you get bogged down mid-table, neither going up nor down, you don't have to tiresomely play out twenty or thirty games knowing your team is going no where.

I also added so many teams to attract the game to a wider audience.

I also wanted this version, my final version, to be a more complete package than any of the earlier Amiga versions, and I personally think it's much more competitive than those early versions.

If you're going to update one of your old games, you're better of making a gigantic leap than a tiny hop :)

Just some tech info for you guys/gals:

The game took me six months to write.
A month before that was spent researching the teams.
The graphics took about six weeks to complete + the instructions.

I then did a month of testing and game the game to some friends to test as well.

Please feel free to have a go if you haven't already downloaded it.
