Windows Update alert - warning

I just used Windows Update to install something called 'VIA - Storage - Primary/Secondary IDE Channel'

There wasn't the normal readme thing with it - I couldn't ascertain what it was - so I went ahead and installed it.

Anyway, it has killed both my CD and DVD drives.

I'd advise caution here with this particular update - Windows cannot currently fix this itself as it reports it cannot now find the working drivers.

Luckily, I could roll-back the drivers via 'Properties'.

I'm off to play GTAIII.

WinXP and CD/DVD problems? always - reboot and hope :(

Sigh, does this effect essential updates? As these are the ones i do only.

The thing is the update was dated June 2006 - makes we wonder why Microsoft (all of a sudden) felt I needed whatever it was.

Maybe they tried to force Vista onto your machine.

@Dan: Driver updates are never marked as critical.

Ah, I suppose you've installed some drivers recently that just happen to have similar/the same ID tags to the VIA IDE drivers. Either that, or you had some drivers installed all along and this new set of drivers is not configured correctly on MS Update (ie the driver-->hardware matching process is not picky enough) and MS finally got around to putting this set of drivers up (it wouldn't be the first time they put up 6 month or year old drivers). In any case, it's safe to say they weren't actually compatible with your hardware. General rule of thumb is - you should have known better that VIA IDE drivers weren't going to do their job on your non-VIA system.

No i havent, but i got all paniky as i just installed all my essential updates, checked my mums updates and updates for my girlfriends work pc, and checked they were all on 'automatic' (due to the all recent 'must get an update' activity).

Whew!, I thought my weekend was gone there for a second lol :)

Perhaps interestingly, my own Vista partition decided it could no longer operate my optical IDE drives yesterday. Nothing I can do to fix it - I guess I get to reinstall Vista a fourth time and hope it just doesn't happen again!

did you by any chance install any games on it? Starforce-protected games can make your optical drives go wonky.[*]

In what? 3 weeks?

Thrashing that harddrive with 30GB of install data, that should teach it who's boss.

Actually while OS size after installation is around 10-11gig, the install data is only around 15gig.


Was planning on it, but all I'd managed to get on was The Sims 2, so StarForce isn't it.


Well, the first time I tried the 64bit version, which turned out to be completely incompatible with my cruddy old gfx card (my cruddy new gfx card doesn't seem to like my motherboard, or vice versa), then the second time in 32bit I accidentally copied over a tonne of program files from an old beta version of Vista, making everything crash a lot - even more often than usual. Then the third time, this happens for no reason.

Next time, I think I'll protect wherever it is that Vista saves System Restore information to, to prevent XP from deleting all of Vista's Restore Points like last time, in case I ever switch back to the XP partition... =]
