Best Buy

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Best Buy

So. I went to best buy and they had this big vista media center display.... So I took a screen shot, wrote 1337 across it, saved it. Set it as the background. Removed the icons on the desktop. Moved the taskbar to the top, auto-hid it, and locked it.... Then sat back and watched floods of people try to get things to work and become totally dumbfounded.

Someone got a staffer to try to help them, and they tried several things. Assumed it was locked up and rebooted the thing, kept screwing with it. Called over one of the Geek Squad guys, he tried fooling with the I/O deviced, kept trying to click the task bar, gave up.

Then they got the 'big geek' from the back out, and he took one look at "1337" on the BG, started to laugh, and then removed the BG image, found the task bar, unlocked it, moved it back, and remade the icons I deleted.

All this, because they were out of nintedo Wiis.

My mother will be writing to your parents.

Best Buy employee discount = manufacturer's price + 10$
Just so you know... Nice stores too...

Best Buy employee discount = manufacturer's price + 10$

Damn! I bet employees don't buy many mousemats.

.

... I don't see how that is even remotely related to what I did.

Thanks for explaining that Amon. I was starting to get worried. :)

I will compensate Damp. He can have one of my old XP Pro SP2 OEM Keys. :)

I doubt very much that it won't activate. You could try if you want. :)

I've got 2 others which is why I'm willing to conpensate. :)

no... thats ok.

I'll have one. Please email.

Heh. Reminds me of the old trick where you'd take a screenshot of a work colleague's desktop, set it as the background and remove all the icons. Then, sit back and watch the ensuing hilarity of the victim's bemusement at not being able to get any of the icons to work...

Just like that. Only I also moves the taskbar, hid the task bar, making the redundant screenshot taskbar seem like the only viable one.

Making the entire thing look dead.

You're evil. :P

Mleh, what, in the world, is the meaning of this thread now? I mean, I know that it's probably an anti-Best Buy thread, but now it wound up being something completely different. I mean, Photoshopping is great and all, but just make this thread a bit more... structured, as it were.

And for those of us on planet Earth....?

lol!

I don't believe anyone even mentioned photoshop... I used MS paint for this task... (Which is the same in Vista as it has always been... kind of ironic)

Also. It isn't anti-best-buy

I like best buy, It is just that the staff happened to be as clueless as the customers. Also, the Geek Squad guys were clueless.. They had to get the guy who fixes their own stuff.. You know.. Registers, fixed the inventory computer system, their own IT guy. The Geek Squad guy didn't figger it out, the guy in the back who doesn't even have a blue shirt had to do it. funny!

CompUSA don't seem to be much better.

"Hire untrained school kids to man your staff, because I like being told that the swap file on my computer is "pretend memory." Being talked down to by crater-faced sales staff is a humbling experience, and the phrase "pretend memory" is awesome. It makes me want to pay you pretend money for the pretend advice I received from your staff with pretend technical knowledge." - Maddox

The fact is, these stores need to hire people, and most real computer people are going to be doing something else. And it doesn't really work for them to pay more to get better people, seeing as 99% of the people that come in barely know what memory is... let alone what a swap file is.

In short.. If you need a hard drive last minute, you aren't going to care if the staff knows anything about them, as long as they know what isle they are in. You wouldn't be there if you needed advice on the best one to buy.

on a related note. I just saw this great best buy ad, where they were all excited about their "Vista trained professionals"

> Being talked down to by crater-faced sales staff is a humbling experience

For who, the sales staff, humbled isn't the term I use to describe such a thing, annoying comes to mind...

On a similar vein though, back in 98 or so I was talking to some cable internet reps - I was trying to find out what kind of connection they had to the net, and the rep kept saying that the old method didn't matter since this was broadband, so I just gave up on the conversation knowing that the reps had no clue what they were talking about.

And as for sales staff at any big box computer store, generally I avoid asking anything - even what isle...

Well. The thing is, Best buy is partnered with (or owns) Geek Squad, who are an on-call computer repair company. They should know how to fix things. Now imagine if I had done this to say... my uncle.. And he called Geek Squad... They might do something crazy, like reinstall windows.
