I notice sometimes my PC starts burning 100% CPU for no apparent reason. This often happens when I've left it on and gone away for a while. Task manager shows nearly 100%, but none of the individual processes show more than 3 or 4. How can this happen and how can I stop it?

That's weird, I have the same problem. It started when I put in a "ATI 9000 Series" AGP card over an integrated one.

I'm not familiar with XP but I would have thought so. Probably just some background Windows housekeeping task? Well, this is can be quite normal. Many things can do this - I think the Windows Indexing service can cause this when Windows thinks your PC is idle.
It wouldn't bother me if it throttled off when I start using the computer again - it doesnt.

Whatever you do, DON'T buy the piece of software linked to in the post. I sorted out the problem by simply disabling Auto Update. Well, I say sorted out but in truth as soon as I go for a manual Windows update the problem reappears, and I don't get my Windows update. So actually I've buried my head in the sand about it, but at least my computer is usable.

All the time. Though, I does have random times when it goes down to 60% for a couple seconds--but then it shoots back up to 100%.
I also tried unplugging it from my modem and it continued to stay at 100% so it can't have to do with the internet.

Disable all windows services you don't depend on - I had the same problems and just went through the list. I disabled auto-update too...as well as the help service. Machine has been fine ever since. Uh - this is XP were talking about right?

No worries man, the link looked good to me too - it was my impatience that led me to install it, not you holding a gun to my head! :) And to be fair, the program didn't work for me but maybe (don't quote me on it though) it works for other people...
