Need to fight my natural urge to upgrade

here's my current spec:

athlon 2400+ CPU / 266Mhz FSB
1Gb RAM
Geforce 6600GT 128Mb AGP GFX
Onboard SIS sound
250gb IDE HD


I've been browsing ebuyer and a realistic cheap upgrade seems to be a socket 939 motherboard with an AGP socket to keep my 6600 card as it seems okay, and a 3800+ dual core athlon 64 processor.

Is it worth keeping the 6600GT agp card, or wait a little longer, then get a PCI-E motherboard and go up to 7800GTX or something?

I went from a 6600 card to a 7900 and the difference was very noticable.

GRAW was unplayable with 6600, and works great with the 7900 as an example.

Unless thats a cheap upgrade i wouldnt bother. Dual core cpu's only really help if youre into rendering etc. they do nothing yet for games.

i would say wait a little longer and get PCI-E on your motherboard, i decided to stay with agp and i now feel it was a mistake.

.. and wait for DX10 graphics cards to run DX10 games to their max *OR* wait for DX10 graphics cards to cause a price crash for non-DX10 cards.

okay, I'll wait six months, then upgrade to quad core and dx 10 graphics, oh and twin sata drives running in raid, and 2 gig dual channel memory. right, I'm leaving this thread before it gets any more geeky.

incidentally, komplett.co.uk have some things cheaper than ebuyer.

I didn't fight the urge to upgrade and did. 1 month after I upgraded, Core 2 DUO processors came out from Intel and 3 weeks later my Geforce 7950GX2 was beaten by the 8800GTX. The 8800GTX is also a DX10 card and my 7950GX2 is DX9.

If you're not looking to upgrade to a high end system then it really doesn't matter what mid range or sub midrange components you go for.

Upgrade and enjoy the benefits of a faster system. If you wait 6 months you'll go to buy your new system and then 3 weeks later it will be obsolete. So, just upgrade and enjoy.

Don't ask the geeks if you don't want geeky answers.

Don't upgrade. After you upgrade you'll feel obligated to go out and try the latest and greatest games and your project will be put back even further. At least, I know that's what would happen if I upgraded. :)

well, I think modding my xbox earlier this week and playing warcraft has done that already :-)
