Need a fan control app for my macbook pro

I just had to put my macbook pro in to repair after cooking the memory by playing Oblivion and Railroads on Bootcamp. I've since read that there is a tool called ATItool which I can use to underclock the graphics card to avoid frying everything, which I'll try. I also found an OSX app called Fan Control which can prevent overheating in the macbook pro by increasing the cooling. Obviously that would be redundant in the XP partition though, so does anyone know a similar app for XP which would help keep things a bit cooler?

Also, I just remembered - just prior to the memory frying, I was playing Railroads but I didn't have the mains plugged in - I was playing from the battery. Might that have contributed, by underpowering the fans? And therefore could I help prevent a repeat by always plugging in the mains when playing games in XP?

wow that's crazy and I'm jsut about to buy one. Mind you it's not for playing Oblivion on but I guess a BMax game could cook it too if it used 100% CPU time in full-screen mode...

CPU does not create even nearly as much especially not BM with its single threaded where a second core is going to sleep ^^.
The X1600 is the burning factor.

And no, you can't underpower the cooling.
The main problem is more likely that you overpowered the GPU as OSX clocks the X1600 to half clock and not "real clock" to prevent that the temparature within does not go higher than 60°C (which is already critical to the harddisk but thats a different thing)

For gaming you will need to get a notebook targeted at that sector with enough free room to cool the GPU. Alternatively you have to put your MBP on a fan plate or something similar that "sucks out" the heat of it.
Otherwise, force the GPU speed to 50% through ATI Tray Tool or Notebook Hardware Control if you want to prevent the next travel to support due to heat problems.

High performance GPU + 2,xcm thick notebooks just can not work, the GPU is capable to run at 100°C without any problems and normally will run at 70°C ++. At that point, the hull of the notebook is more stressed than in any test apple is doing with it, the mainboard is burnt (most likely the ram banks / ram are suffering first) and the hard disk had a very noisy death long ago.

oh isn't that nice? They give you a good (if you can call the 1600 good) card and then half-speed it so they don't fry stuff? And people wonder why I keep far far away from macs.

heh, my thoughts exactly Kanati. They may as well save everyone some money and use cheaper VGA hardware. Only then people would be disappointed by the lower specs.

Mac's have always had middle of the road GPU's as standard, but when they underclock that, really makes you wonder.

Wow. I love my macbook but that sucks. You're right, why don't they just put in a cheaper cooler GPU?

One small tip, may not apply to the MacBook Pro but with my partner's laptop, if you use it on a desk the fan is fine but if you use it on say a Duvet or your lap, the material can make a "seal" with the fan outlet and it goes into overdrive and heats up tons more whereas on the desk you have a couple of mm clearance for the air to exit properly...
