I love my Dell 24" Widescreen 2405FPW. It has a native resolution of 1920x1200, perfect size.
Response time is OK - 16ms (~60fps). Colors are good, brightness is very good too.
Also, it has VGA, DVI, Composite, SVideo, and Component Cables. Picture in Picture and Picture by Picture capability.
It has been about 2 1/2 years now and not a single dead pixel.

I'm going to buy LG L2000C-SF 20" soon. It's did well in a test last year, has a 1600*1200 resolution and now it's price has dropped to 399€. Very reasonable price for such a good monitor... it even has a pivot function!

We use comparable Dell monitors at work (dual) and they are great too.
Apple makes the best monitors, but they are pricey.

I have a SyncMaster 913n 19". No DVI but never needed it. Response is 8ms which makes it ideal for gaming. Got it for < £150 a year or so ago. Never had an issue / dead pixels. Auto setup was perfect.

A Xerox 17". Nothing special but the unit looks classy and I've never had ANY problems with it. The anti-glare protective screen really works, too.

I second the suggestion of a Dell. Any Dell. Even if it's a second-hand 2405FPW. The response time is actually 12ms for the panel used, but some Dell trickery improves it to 8ms (the newer 2407 has a response time of 6ms).
No matter, ghosting is less evident on my Dell than on my Nintendo DS Lite, so gaming is not an issue. I also regularly watch full HD movies. I'm considering upgrading to the 2707 (27 inches!) but they are still expensive.

vinyl: cool you have the only "opponent" to my TFT :-) I got my mainly for using it as alternative TV as I don't have the needed space anymore for a real TV. Reason against Dell: Mine is 20" cost 500$, Dell is 24", cost 1200+$

I have 2 x widescreen Eizo 23", one I use as a TV / secondary monitor. Not cheap at all but worth every penny - for accurate colours, good moving picture, viewing angles etc.
I found myself squinting to read text on my Iiyama VisionMaster Pro 454 19" CRT. It was supposedly one of the best CRT's available (and cost me over £400 new) but it got so that any res over 1024x768 lost definition and was bad for my eyesight.
An LCD was the only way to go and I didn't want to get a cheap one. The Dell fit all the requirements I could possibly have in a display (except HDCP, which I don't need anyway). I had my PC hooked up via DVI, Xbox360 via component and my Xbox 1 by s-video.

Yes it is worth, I work each day with them, but the ASUS has a very good quality as well. It outperformed most of its opponents and at this price it was just a "have to take it".
I know that Dells are good as well. Owned an Inspiron 8200 notebooks for 2 years and the display was fantastic ... but I just did not have that much money to buy a "TFT with console usage capabilities", nor do I really have the space to put a 24" there ... the 20" already eats quite a lot of the quite restricted space of my 9.5 m2 room :)

I have a Viewsonic VX922. It's very nice, and also syncs down to 50Hz which is rare for LCDs in America (it means I can use it with my Amiga in PAL with a flickerfixer.)
Before that I had something close to this BenQ FP71. I liked it so much I bought one for the missus.
Both have a DVI port, personally I think DVI is worth it. The Viewsonic can switch between the VGA port and DVI port fairly easily, the BenQ seems to have trouble with this and really would only like you to use one port.
I'm very happy with both, I've never noticed any lag even on the slower BenQ monitors. Never had any dead pixels with them either.

After two broken Acer Widescreens in a row, I today replaced my aging 15" Sony with a Samsung Syncmaster 932b. It switches happily between XBox 360 and PC without me even having to press a button and the image quality is a little better than the Acer to boot. No dead or stuck pixels and it's much, much better looking ( the phyical monitor ) than the Acer.
I have a 20.1" samsung 1600x1200 and like it s lot. It's ridiculously bright though. I had to turn brightness down to 60% or I'd get blinded looking at it.
It's supposedly 5ms response, and I havent seen any ghosting at all on it. I play most games at 800x600 because my vid card is too slow to play them at full res. And some of the intermediate resolutions can look less sharp when interpolated.

here's another vote for the dell 24"... I love mine.
Eizos are very good on the paper but till today i only went with sony (crt as tft) and i'm pretty happy with them. A very good subjective picture, i never had any dead pixels and they never broke on me.
I have a LG FLATRON L1919S 19". It has a response rate of 8ms, cost £169.99, and is more than fast enough for gaming. I was going to get a widescreen TFT manufactured by Phillips, but I don't really like widescreen, I prefer big and square.
Dell 2407FPW here as well. Absolutely perfect and I would never go back to anything less.
Just updated laptops as well and made sure to get same 1920x1200 resolution in Dell Inspiron 9400.
Others mentioned the many video connection options. I'd add the 2 * side USB ports and other memory card/stick ports as extra goodies.

if you want to watch HD DVD or blueray properly in the future, you will want a monitor eith HDCP support or you will not be able to play back at full resolution.
Not many monitors, even new ones support HDCP though.

i am now using a brandnew 30" dell 3007WFP-HC widescreen monitor. using 2560*1600 is really huuuuuge ;)
i have to turn my head to get anything into view - and with TrackIR this is even more awsome... i never would go back to smaller screens. once you get used to it, you'll love it.
