KLite codecs worth downloading?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/KLite codecs worth downloading?

Does anyone here use the K-Lite codec package to play their media files? Are they worth downloading?

They can be found here,

Any advice would be helpful,
Jason.

Apart from the legal side (hard to tell, but they repacked the codc together), this codec pack is stable enough for daily use, should be able to watch most movie clips available.

I tried it and it made a mess of my system. This was ages ago though. The best thing to do is to download only what you need.

Most stuff is either DivX or XVid.

There's another codec pack called nemo. Google for it. It's a little more packed with codecs than the K-Lite one.

While it can be 'convenient' to load every codec known to man in one go, in practise there is a lot of potential for interference and instability as well.

Personally I'd only install the codecs you actually need.

in my case, that was just:
1) Real Alternative (to play RealVideo)
2) Quicktime Alternative (to play Quicktime)
3) Koepi's XVID codec (also does DiVX, IIRC)

Since I had to format last time I installed K-lite, I think I'll pass in future.

I just did a full install last week...works a treat for me.

Used it for years with no problems.

If you have a video file that doesn't play because of codec issues i.e. missing codec, this program will detect what codec is used in the video file, tell you what you need to play the file so you can google for the codec and download it.

:)

This way you only install the codecs you need and not a bunch of other crap that comes with codec packs.

No codec pack is ever worth it. Load what codecs you need manually, as has been said.

K-lite lets you install which codecs you want.

Those who use K-Lite before and have problem with it
(mostly before 2.0 if you get instability)
Try to dowlod 2.8x release, it should be stabler.
