Mark what about another worklog

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Mark what about another worklog

Just a thought it would be nice to have a monthly 'what im doing atm is...' worklog thing then at least we would know whats going on.

Over at TGC they post whats going on in the forum all the time this makes for a much less 'what the hells going on' forum where everyone wants information. Just setup a reminder or summat to do a worklog :)

But if Mark gave a worklog as often as you, would you be happy with
Ive finally got mouse support going well, I also want to add digital/analogue joysticks and finally get the redefine system working on the keyboard etc

(Am not having a go at you, just pointing out that more worklogs normaly means smaller worklogs)

But it would mean we would know what was going on, thats what im talking about

But it would mean we would know what was going on, thats what im talking about

People "knowing what's going on" appears to have been the cause of as many forum problems as "not knowing what's going on".

Well, fair enough, if thats true, and you think most ppl would be happy with one line comment every week, then I agree with you.

I have a sneaking feeling though that Mark would then face the complaint that his worklogs were not comprehensive enough.

I agree that this enduring feeling that Max3d is now "selved" or "dukenukem" delayed is quite deppressing. Its strange really, because Im normaly one of the first to point out that Irrlich, miniB3D or eliza (Humm when eliza development was dropped, there was the promise of another engine), exist.

Oh yes i do want worklogs in episodic format with cliffhangers please like...uhm...

"...and after that is done i'm pretty certain that we'll face max3d in*cut*"
...TO BE CONTINUED...

Didn't Mark post about Max3D just a few weeks ago?

Personally, I think he's said too much, as it is. Remember that thread that started up about a successor to bmax, just because of an off-the-cuff remark that Mark made? Madness.

People "knowing what's going on" appears to have been the cause of as many forum problems as "not knowing what's going on".

Quite the opposite... The only case of 'knowing causing problems' is when the knowledge comes as a bombshell.

You will have your nay'sayers either way, the question is who do you want to please? Those anticipating your future, or those who don't really care?

This topic is brought up time and time again, and it's funny that there are always those who say "but you damn him if he does, and you damn him if he doesn't", which will always be the case, I am sorry but there is no happy medium. Some users will just always be unhappy regardless, but does that mean you 'punish' your loyal/good customers? Do you keep them in the dark, do you let them move on and forget about you just because your afraid of a small amount of ridicule from the peanut-gallery/downtrodden over an internet forum?

Perhaps when the user base is almost gone will BRL wise up and realize that to keep them happy, all they have to do is keep them in the loop.

Excuss me, I started that thread, and it wasnt because of anything that Mark had said, which as I said at the time I hadnt read. Everyone just assumed it was because of that.

12-20-2006 is well over a month ago... Before that was 08-25-2006 4 months prior and then another 5 months prior was 04-06-2006.

You can never please everyone... Besides that thread didn't start as a hit on Mark, it just so happen to be a holiday at the troll employment agency.

Point is those who will wait will wait, those who want a solution now have already found theirs. However those who will wait hate to be left in the dark.... They at least want the light on from time to time...

In that case, I apologize. I just remember your thread appearing at the same time as Mark's comment.

I know, it really anoyed me, cos it was an attempt to start a community debate about what Bmax as a language could do with and without. If I had posted it a week earlery it might have worked.

I dont want the Max3d system ending up like a 'Duke Nukem forever' where as we hear loads about it but never see it. Mark released a demo ages ago which was pretty good why not release another demo so we can see whats going on.

Before anyone thinks im a newbie, ive been here since BlitzBasic2d beta (was on the original beta team for the original Blitz PC). I dont want to see blitz lose ground due to problems that could be avoided.

Quite the opposite... The only case of 'knowing causing problems' is when the knowledge comes as a bombshell.
It always will. Why? Because written communication is always open to interprentation. There is no way you can have been a member of this forum for as long as I remember it and yet not noticed this.

Some users will just always be unhappy regardless, but does that mean you 'punish' your loyal/good customers?
Yes. Unfortunately BRL has never marketed BlitzMAX to one specific market, except it's own, which unfortunately happens to be a fairly heterogeneous bunch.

Now as it is, there is no way to effectively market to such heterogeneous groups, as they all have different want and demands of the product. Additionally it seems that, come hell and high water, Max3D will be done in whatever method and timeframe Mark feels most comfortable with and no amount of bribes or assurances is going to change that.

I can certainly understand why, and although I strongly disagree with Marks decision (along with many other things, like for instance Whitesnake and commercial viability of Linux Consoles) I respect his opinion, and ofcourse BRL being his company, he is entitled to run it however he likes.

I dont want the Max3d system ending up like a 'Duke Nukem forever' where as we hear loads about it but never see it.
I don't think there's any danger of that happening. Up to this point in time BRL have not announced a product that did not arrive. Remember that Max3D is a much different beast than Blitz3D covering new topics. Also there is a possibility that Max3D is (or has been) suffering from the "Second System Syndrome".

Mark released a demo ages ago which was pretty good why not release another demo so we can see whats going on.
Sure, but I don't see the point. Personally I hate it when other people get to play with the cool toys, and dangling it infront of me is just adding insult to injury.

One day Mark will release Max3D with full documentation and a great feature set at a good price and many people will NOT BELIEVE that it has been released, will duly avoid looking at it or any web pages about it, because they are so accustomed to going down the road of fantasy.

If he is working on it, and it seems clear that he is, and you have some faith in his ability to make it work and to complete it, then obviously it is only a matter of time, not a matter of `whether or not`. It's only when you start to lose that sense of faith in him and belief in his ability that you start to doubt its validity or likelihood of being real, and that leads to these endless discussions of make-believe and substitution.

Just wait.

Need you hear from Mark as to the status in order to fill in the holes of your own doubtfulness? The only service he'd be providing by telling you what's happening with it would be a social service and a catering to your lack of belief in him or his product. Your desire, therefore, to know what is happening with the product time and again, is really your desire to disbelieve in the product time and again. It's an approach that is at odds with itself and is contradictory. Just wait and let it be. Doesn't mark deserve your belief in him more than your doubtful needs? You don't really want to know about the status of the project, you want to be reassured to escape from your anxiety.

Ahhh! It all makes sense now. :)

That said, knowing what's going on with Max3D is always welcome ;-)

I respect his opinion, and ofcourse BRL being his company, he is entitled to run it however he likes.

Good for you! I respect his opinion as well, however no matter how much you sit and sputter that "it will be done when it's done" just wont fly with most userbases let alone potential investors (potential buyers of the product). One of the big things in any business is "whats going on, where is it" and the lack of communication on a regular basis merely means the decline of paying customers (it's a business fact).

Regardless of what your personal views, the typical business model stands and holds true in most situations. Especially when it's word of mouth!

then obviously it is only a matter of time

Precisely! The technology market has a very short holding for time. Technology doesn't sit around and wait for mark to spout the "state of max3d". Technology is much like the buyers of said technology, in as it changes, so do how the customers buy software to follow. If Max3D is outdated by the time it is released, then all of those with faith, will now realize that by having blind faith, they had made a mistake.

So in reality it's not about time... It's about keeping your customers in the loop to keep them coming back.

Edzup is a long time respected member of Blitzbasic.com. I'm sure as soon as mark sees this post, he'll reply with something.

Haha, Edzup is id number 26 :)
You do realize my old blitz3d beta account is id number 15?
http://www.blitzbasic.com/Account/showuser.php?id=15

BOOYEAH!

The fact is, people should be writing stuff with what's available now rather than discussing software that doesn't exist yet.

Mark what about another worklog

EdzUp what about finishing Hunter instead of wasting your time here?

I am porting Hunted to BlitzMax, atm tho I am overcoming flu so not a lot of coding atm. I just wanted to know what was going on with Max3d :)

Zenith: Ah but Zen was ya registered with the forum without a BUID :)

Haha yeah, I don't think it needed a BUID, funnier yet -- I had to give up my even older Blitz2d account. XD

Yeah I remember the old forum too, those were the days :)

or even the blitzbasement

Bah - The Good Ole Days were the green forum that predated the Blitz Basement. Back when B3D was being discussed and/or dreamed about like Max3D is now.

Aaah nostalgia - it ain't what it used to be...

Yeah, I remember first getting into blitz2d writing my first game during that time! Someone was writing this crazy raycaster with *textures*.. :)

I remember those days... Back when I'd just started uni and noticed that Blitz was on the PC in Edge.

...back when PRJ's mode-7-esque Mario Kart racer (in Blitz2D) was the talk of the town...

Ninja Kart! I've still got a copy of it on one of my back up discs.

Jeez I rememeber that, along with Tracer's dot 3d in Blitz2d stuff :)

/cough

yeay!

Wasn't there a mailing list that predated the forums? I think I have a bunch of old messages from it on my old mail account.

I've been around since bum was mailed out on floppies. I didn't know if I was getting porn or updates.

I still have my old BUMs sitting in the old Amiga BB2 box. And I remember the mailing list - I used to be quite active on that, and have a bb web site. For those that recall the RWE libraries and improved editor, well, I was part of that (mainly the customisable toolbar and bits of the editor).

Incidentally, I'm about to sell off all my old miggy stuff on ebay when I get back from holiday at the end of next week, including boxed copy of bb2, if anyone's interested...)

Oh, yeah, another worklog would make interesting reading.

Well then, Mark T, what are you waiting for posting here?
Snap to it!
