M$'s secret deals with software developers...

Do Microsoft have any secret deals with the majority of software development companies?

I ask because every piece of software I own that worked on XP won't work on Vista. Also, after visiting the sites of nearly all these companies; to get the software I own working with Vista I have to purchase an upgrade.

Just go back to using XP.

Its due to the security system in Vista - turn it off, and you should be fine...

I have turned it off. I've even selected XP SP2 compatibility for each of the software and they still don't work.

All I get is this little box telling me that the program has stopped working and that it is looking for a solution to the problem and if one isn't found I will be contacted.

One bit of software that behaves differently to the rest is UltimateUnwrap. Where I get a little box showing up with other software, UUnwrap crashes the whole system.

..which is why I always wait for common startup problems to be solved first..

Yeah, I'm waiting for the problems I am having with Windows 95 to be solved before I upgrade to 98.

Just remember that being an early adopter for Vista, is better than running Linux. :o>

You could wait a few months till they patch most of the programs to work in vista.

I said this ages, it's the 'future' of Windows. Barely any of your old stuff will work properly. It's called PROGRESS! :)

If it's not a secret, Amon, could you tell us what software is giving you problems. I am using Vista for quite a few months now and have yet to find a real problematic piece of software. Looks like we are living in two different worlds regarding Vista.

Nah! It's ok, although overly protective with things. Even adding a new folder to my Start Menu requires permission. :)

At least with Linux I don't need to pay hundreds of dollars just to run it, pay hundreds (thousands?) of dollars to upgrade my computer to run it, and when it's installed I don't expect my Windows software to run on it.

I think you'll find - based on my response - that I didn't pick up on that at all (despite thinking "What an odd thing for Flameduck to say, given his love of Linux"). :o)

Nevertheless, I'm happy to look like a boofhead for the opportunity to express which has been bugging me for some time now.

@amon, some of that stuff works fine on Vista. Don't know why you are having problems, but some of that software is covered at http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_RTM_Software_Compatibility_List - which should give you a good idea of alternative software, if not a solve for the problem.

Some of the software you listed works fine when turning off UAC (Blitz for example), so despite you saying you've done that, I don't believe you. =]

Other software that REQUIRES you to purchase an upgrade, I would look for alternatives and never do business with that company again.

Self harming would probably be safer.

First of all, I have no love for Linux. I can name plenty of things that are wrong with it. There just happens to be less things wrong with it than other OSes (because you can customize it to the point of rediculousness).

Second of all, I was simply reitterating something Amon had said in a previous thread, so was neither being sarcastic nor ironic, although probably a bit of a smartass the situation taken into account.
