Just a philosophical thought. Isn't it funny, a lot of people are no longer publishing their email adress in plain, machine readable text, like jack@... , but they write jack ät somewhere döt com , just to make sure spambots cannot make use of it.
Seems like this is the beginning of something new, common behaviour to defend ourselfs against machines (Terminator soundtrack starts here). And I think these things will evolve quickly.
It reminds me very much of the Bladerunner scene, where a special test has to be done to seperate human beings from human-like machines, androids.
Weird times.

Which is ironic, because most sites (like this one, and most if not all google pages) protect proper emails, by garbling the address, where as any 2-bit spambot is going to be able to harvest a "jack at somewhere dot com" email address.
Computer programs are usually smarter than the people who try to circumvent them.

I can understand why jfk posted this and I would also like to ask, how will Computers and their advancement change human behaviour?
In 25 years from now when I'll be 52, will I have an Operating system that is or can be perceived as alive?
Will I have a semi-concious robot dealing with my finances and everyday things?
The war between man and machine could have already started. We just don't see it as a war. Then, in 25 years when computers and machines turn on us we'll wish we never created them.

I just had an Idea on what Microsoft should implement in Windows 2020. They could implement a system where it asks you if you want windows to crash. That way you may have some say in it.

His confusion may have been due to Blade Runner being loosely based on the book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' by Philip K. Dick, which has the word android in the title. Easy mistake to make if you ask me.
Well. They -are- androids as well. They are based on a kind of biological nanotechnology. They are androids, in that they are human-form 'robots' They are created more than grown. Part by part. But they are indistiguishable from humans because they are so biologically alike.
There would be better ways to tell if they are human or not today. But at the time the story was written, there wasn't.
Dick was less concerned with that. Just like all his other books and stories, he is more concerned with the definition of 'reality' and what that means. At what point is reality false? And can something be both real and false at the same time.

Thus not androids. In "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", they are still not androids. They are like the "tanks" in Space above and behond. There are geneticaly enginered "people"
The line between what is an android and what is a 'geneticaly enginered' person is the whole point. Is the only line that an android is made of metal? Seems like a fickle line to me.
Android, droid or whatever... we always have to make sure we can pull the plug somehow...

I will agree that they are "Androids", if you think that the "Tank grown People" in space above and behond are also Androids.
If you feel that that in SAB they are not androids, then neither are the replicants.
The difference comes in the engineered part. If you are growing straight humans, then they aren't human-like... they are just humans. But if you created them from scratch, or from parts, or through some kind of engineering. They are androids.
Cyborgs require some kind of non-oganic technology. But a human driving a car is a cyborg. A human using a computer is a cyborg. Certainly, a human with metal plates to hold their bones together after a bad accident, is a cyborg.

I never used to bother with diguising email addy, but since I now have a bunch of spam with no way of identifying the originator and from multiple domains, its kinda become a habit now.
Like all things, it will evolve no doubt, hackers/scrip kiddies whatever jargon term is used will develop better bots so people will grow more aware and take more precautions. Its a never-ending cycle.
I just ignore my spam. I get about 100 emails a day. nearly All spam. I get about 25 a week that aren't really spam, but are useless.. and maybe 1 a week that wasn't spam. I live with it. It is easy to pick them out.. It isn't like spamers are creative... trying to circumvent my non-existant spam filter makes them stick out to my internal one. Makes it really easy.

again by definition - machines. Thus it would seem that by the traditional definition, "Andys" are not Androids in the traditional sense, regardless of how Philip Dick uses the term in his book.

Haven't you seen the Terminator movies? The ability to pull the plug is why we're percieved as a threat! Besides if we can manage to peacefully co-exist with fish, we should be able to do the same with Andriods and/or Bioengineered humans.
Define Robot? Are nano-bots robots? They can be atomic machines, using a variety of materials? Are life-forms not atom-based machines? Would a collection of organic-like nanobots not be a robot?

Yeah, all my spam is filtered into junk folders, but I just find it annoying anyway!

On the whole android thing, Flameduck's right about the definitions, although the title is still relevant even if almost an analogy to the concept of bio-engineered replicants.

Without trying to get too involved or critical, if the fish had intelligence and a means to react to our (humans') constant harvesting, eating and even killing fopr sport, do you truly believe that they would peacefully co-exist with us? That is part of the point with D.A.D.O.E.S, also similarly in the Terminator series and even The Matrix, that the intelligent 'machines' or whatever, no longer wish to be in a form of oppression or have their 'lives' ruled by humans.

No. They are carbon-based organisms.

No. They would probably be a virus or bacteria. It depends on what you mean by "organic-like". I don't think real science has a definition for "organic-like".
