Resistance is futile, Earthlings.

How they mistook a lit sign of a pixellated character for a bomb, I have no idea.

And an article that explains the picture.

yeah it was just OTT paranoia.

..world is sick..its time for new asteroid..

America is not 'the world'...

..yeah..they are not..thats why I cant get it why rest of the world have to worry about their election results..crappy..as I said..time for changes..new asteroid, please..

Yes. A new asteroid, preferably with selective targeting with morons and politicians as targets.

Uh, oh... I've just checked. There are no enough asteroids in the asteroid belt for the estimated number of targets.

Barney

What's even funnier is that from the article it looks like these things were in place for weeks before anyone noticed them! lol!

IPete2.

Because most people just assumed it was an advertisement campaign... which it was.

I think it is hilarious that on the news the blurred out his finger. omgomgoomgomgomogmg its a middle finger... I think. Blur it out!!! ..|.. OMG

yeah it was just OTT paranoia.

Not really, no.

The best take I've seen on it yet. Comedy Central is at fault here, not the Boston PD. They did exactly as they should have.

Yeah. My first thought was that it was a pretty dumb thing to do considering the current terrorist climate. Call it paranoia if you like - it was still dumb.

Oh, and a comment from someone who actually lives in Boston.

"Ok. Let's get some things straight. In no way do I condone the action of Mayor Mumbles, but the city of Boston was not shut down. A few streets were closed and the Charles river was closed (not exactly an issue in winter). If you weren't watching the TV news, then you probably wouldn't even have known what was going on. Nothing was evacuated. No alarms or alerts broadcast. We basically had a half million dollar training exercise that wasn't in the budget, and now Mumbles wants to make Turner pay for it. However, the kind of panic that did happen yesterday was a bit more insidious.

It's not paranoia to send in the bomb squad, which blows shit up first and asks questions later (the way it should be) when you have something suspicious. It's not complete ignorance to think something with wires and a timer might be suspicious. It is complete ignorance to disregard information that tells you that there is no threat. It is paranoia when don't actually investigate but instead fan the media firestorm, notify federal authorities, spend half a million dollars, propagate bomb rumors, accost people with accents, interrogate people who fit a profile, prepare swift legal action against hippie artists, and knowingly cover-up information in the name of "being safe". All of which happened yesterday and are continuing now."

Edited out.

Another account from a Boston resident:

"Yeah, seriously. I drove right into downtown Boston in the middle of rush hour, and found it to be no worse than any other day.

At work all day yesterday, people were curious, but there was hardly any sort of panic. I agree with my fellow Bostonians - the police force did exactly what they should have done, given these things were suspicious. There wasn't any panic that I could see, unless you were standing in front of a camera."

Stop letting the media spoon feed you, it just makes you look foolish.

Also, Mousey, what's that about? If you don't like my site, you don't have to visit it. Personal attacks aren't really smiled upon on this board.

But you do bring to my attention that I haven't updated it much in the past few months. I'll remove it from my sig until I get rolling on it again.

Good job the Police did act the way they did, I reckon. If they didn't, terrorists would just build bombs with a smiley face of LEDs on the front. People would just point, chuckle, and then walk away... :p

Why... Cartoon Network runs Adult Swim. Not COmedy Central ;)

Sorry, got that name wrong. The point still stands though.

Ok Warren, I have edited the posts, sorry if I caused you offence.

It's a light-up sign! The press is using loaded terms like "package", "device", "fake bomb", "bomb hoax" to make it sound scary. Even calling it a "stunt" or a "hoax" as the press has relentlessly done is skewing the truth, since it was never meant to be a trick of any kind, and it's been up for three weeks, in ten different cities.

If the terrorists ever plant 2 mm thick bombs disguised as signs with blinking lights and cartoon characters, that take more than 3 weeks to go off, the Boston PD is on the job!

It's a light-up sign!

It's also potentially a remote detonator.

An unknown device with visible batteries and wires hanging out of it needs to be investigated and responded to in the same way as any other report.

I guess this might be something of a novelty to non-UKers, but during the IRA 'troubles', the army would regularly blow up anything and everything that even remotely passed as a 'suspect device'.

Act now, ask questions later. Best policy.

That's standard procedure here as well. Detonate whatever it is and then figure out what it's made of afterwards.

This whole situation is really not all that surprising or unusual.

It's also potentially a remote detonator.

So is my shoe.

So is my shoe.
Which is why we need to be even more vigilant/paranoid than before 9/11. ;)

Oh my God, it glows!
What is this black magic?!

Act now, ask questions later. Best policy.
Except it didn't really work, did it? For all the blowing up of misplaced luggage, the IRA still managed to execute several high profile attacks, not to mention the constant attacks on British Soldiers. I mean sure, it looked like the government was preventing terrorist attacks, but there's no evidence that suggests they where successful.

Which is why we need to be even more vigilant/paranoid than before 9/11.
Yeah, because if you can't stop a bunch of maniacs with boxcutters, you're gonna have a really good chance preventing someone who has a bomb.

So is my shoe.

I'm not sure what your point is other than trying to be obtuse.

Are you saying no IRA plot was foiled? Ever? I doubt that.

Yeah, because if you can't stop a bunch of maniacs with boxcutters, you're gonna have a really good chance preventing someone who has a bomb.
I have no idea what a 'boxcutter' is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxcutter

Oh, you mean a Stanley Knife. ;)

American attack, american term. They were: Boxcutters. When you get a bunch of planes crashed into your buildings you can call them "Stanley Knives".

It was wrong for the adult swim guys to do it. It was illegal for many reasons. But if the police bothered to ask a few people on the street, they would have learned what the cartoon is. They could have then asked Adult Swim. And in less time than it took to bring in the bomb squad. The problem would have been solved.

Instead. They blew up a bunch of things, and using explosives is ALWAYS dangerous. So they endangered the lives of the populace needlessly.

Both side of this did something wrong. Period.

Quote I saw that sums it up:

I don't buy the "obviously, they were cartoon characters" line. It was a graphic of someone giving you the finger, with wires and a power source. Those things tend to make bomb squads pay attention.

A crass statement...

and another.

You guys think it's funny now? Check out what the two punks
had to say after they were caught:

I believe Fark.com called it Comedy Gold. I might agree.

The only reason some of the IRA attacks were successful was because people like you didn't report suspicous packages and devices. You can't really blame the bomb disposal teams for not finding the bombs. I think that is insulting to them and the work they do.

Americans talk like the war on terror is a new thing. In the UK we've been fighting it for over thirty years.

Seeing as I lived in Australia and Denmark at the time, there didn't seem to be much point.

You can't really blame the bomb disposal teams for not finding the bombs.
I don't. If anyone should get credit/blame, it should really be the IRA, for not being too obvious with their bombs.

I think that is insulting to them and the work they do.
Well you're entitled to your opinion.

Americans talk like the war on terror is a new thing. In the UK we've been fighting it for over thirty years.
I believe the IRA was founded in 1922 after Michael Collins "surrendered" to the British. Which makes it 84 years.

Eddie Izzard...

Seeing as I lived in Australia and Denmark at the time, there didn't seem to be much point
I didn't say it was your fault. You are just ignoring what I said so why bother quoting it?

I believe the IRA was founded in 1922 after Michael Collins "surrendered" to the British. Which makes it 84 years
I was actually refering to the Provisional IRA which was formed in 1969, but I suspect you already knew that.

Bill Bailey's quite funny also.....

And now you can own your very own...bomb!
