What AV software you recommend ?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/What AV software you recommend ?

Hi guys, this prob gets asked often, but anyway.

I have been trying to decide which solution I should go for as I am really not impressed with norton at all,the sooner I am rid of it the better.

I have read some on BitDefender and NOD32, and the usual suspects, but which should I be looking at for a home solution. I dont mind spending the money if I am going to be well protected.

With BitDefender, I can get a 2 year subscription, 2 pc license for $70. Seems like a good price, I know free beats any price too, and have heard of AVG ( is it comprehensive and robust enough ?), but I would like to hear your opinions.

TIA

I have used Norton, McAfee and Nod32.

I love Nod32 - it has such low overheads and you don't know it is there - it silently updates - not the fanfare updating of some virus checkers.

I don't think I will ever change back from Nod32.

I highly, highly recommend Nod32.

I use AVG Free. It does what it says on the tin.

Another question, does one need a firewall in these packages, or is the windows firewall adequate ?

I use F-Secure.. :)

The best (imho)!

AVG Free.

But whatever you do, stay far, far away from Norton System Works.

AVG,two bought lisences... which are expiring soon - good thing is that renewal is 50% off!

Avast rocks

AVG 7.5 Free Edition.

NOD32 even Microsoft use it!

Re: AVG

I keep getting a popup telling me the free version will not be getting virus database updates as of, er, sometime this month. Aren't all you other AVG users getting this?

are you still using 7.1?

if so you need to upgrade to the free 7.5 version

I haven't used an anti virus in about 5 years. And I have never been infected. But I have heard good things about AVG.

So they are still continuing support for a free version, then? I got the distinct impression I'd have to start paying from now on.

Also, I didn't bother with upgrading because I couldn't find what the sys specs for the new version were. I'm still on win98 here (ahem), and thought the new version might be for XP only, or something.

Maybe I'll dl it and give it a go. Thanks.

Yup. It's not compatible with win98. :(

I use Avast!. It's relatively lightweight, doesn't BSOD systems like AVG has, completely free and with no popups whatsoever. I think it still supports old OS's, tho since you mentioned Windows Firewall that's obviously not an issue.

Windows Firewall is adequate, though hardly very good. If you know what you're doing you can get away with it, but if your partner/kids/some neighbours' dog is using your machine you'd want something that actually does it's job (read:anything but ZoneAlarm, I recommend Kerio).

Yup, version 7.5 is still 100% free for personal use, and will continue to be available. They've been downplaying the existence of the free version for some time now, but it's still there if you know where to look.

Easier located through majorgeeks.com than through the AVG website itself...
