And it's about time too.

If we could download music legally and play it on any device we wanted, then we might be more encouraged to do so.

Bottom line is, nobody is going to inconvenience themselves to legally get music that will only play on certain devices, when they can go to 'alternative sources' and get the same tracks that will play on anything.

The music industry is fighting a losing battle here.

Me? I prefer to buy CDs and rip them to MP3 format myself. My car CD player plays MP3 CDs, so why would I bother paying for music that I can only play on my PC and can't burn to CD?

What right does anybody have to tell me how I can use something I have legally paid for anyway?

I could go on all day about this. But my dinner is burning.

I ended up buying less music than ever before because a) i don't wanna buy compressed music (honestly i once was hoping for better quality than the cd could offer and not less) and b) i don't buy CDs which are copy protected.

So i dunno which direction the music industry is heading but as a customer i'm less and less on their radar.

And as long as you can get music alternatively, listening to other music or my own or my old cds i see no reason for changing this behaviour.

I haven't bought many CDs for ages, built up a good collection few years back. I have ripped them onto my PC and keep them as WAVs for purity. The most recent music I bought was some Airbase and other trance which I paid for the MP3 downloads. I don't pirate music. In fact I don't fileshare at all, it's a weird unknown world to me...

The radio music is crap today. and the radio music is what is suppose to sell in stores.. however some time and when there is a good cd that i buy.. hmm like Twisters Sisters 20 years ago. :)

I listen to pandora.com, it's a bit like radio only you can say which kind of music/bands you want to hear. I actually bought a few CDs (by German groups And One and Beborn Beton) because I liked music I heard through that site that I didn't know about before.

Man, I hope to hell he wins.

Hey there are also great radio programs in germany like the Zündfunk on Bayern2! :O)

The 1+ million songs sold on iTunes disagree with you.

Do songs downloaded via iTunes, only play on certain devices? Like only on an iPod? I'm curious about that.

Kinda. They only play on iPod or an iTunes enabled player (like your computer).

I don't pirate music.
Actually in the eyes of British law you do. In britain it is illegal to copy any coryrighted material even if it is just for personal use. I can't comment on other countries.

Ironicly. The music industry has made more money from me after I found allofmp3.com than before. Why? Because they must have had their USA credit card licenses stopped, cause I can't pay for more music. So I've been forced to buy new CDs by the bands I found on their in stores.

More than half the number of CDs I bought my entire life before allofmp3 because all the music sucked.

The Mars Volta, Tiamat, and Apocalyptica alone account for 15 CDs I've bought. I would have bought more, but they are VERY hard to find. Well.. not The Mars Volta, but the other 2 are.

If they sold music I wanted, and gave me a reasonable way to preview them. I would buy even more.

I never would have known of those 3 bands if it weren't for allofmp3. Unlike other 'services' they offered me ways to find new bands. (See.. I have particular tastes, and I don't tend to like a lot of bands that sound 'like' other bands... I don't get how people measure that.)

For example. I LOVE Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, and Blind Guardian. But can't stand 99% of all the other bands that sound 'Like' them. Cause they don't sound like them. They sound like crap, with obvious riffs and no musical sense. They just sing about fantasy, or have 'epic' guitars and other senseless chunder.

Radio has been dead to me... ok.. It was never alive for me.

And even Pandora can't figger out what I like. I ultimately end up with stations that JUST play one band. Or that play all kinds of random junk that bores me.

I'm not on the music industry radar. My tastes are too divergent, so I don't feel bad 'stealing' from them. Cause the alternative would be to do without.

They might disagree with me, but all these pirate things have gotten them far more of my money than they ever got from me on their own.

They are welcome to come after me. It is their loss.

What pisses me off the most, is that the music industry, like no other industy, is perfectly poised to use the internet to the max. They could have online storefronts that opperate on a whole new concept. But they are so stuffy and greedy that they have pulled the wool over their own eyes.

They are sitting on a mint, but rather than capturing the money on the way out, they try to beat up the people that pick it up along the way.

How do they make money? They sign artists, advertise those artists, and get people to buy CDs from those artists.

They PAY to make videos and to get the music out to radio stations, they PAY to have scouts find new acts. They PAY for studio time, or they PAY to own a studio.

And they could keep doing all that, but on the internet they can do all of that FOR FREE!

If you had a site where people can download 128kbs mp3s for free from any group, then pay like allofmp3.com a small amount for 128-CD quality mp3s at 2-3 cents a megabyte. Then also from the same storefront, they could listen to streaming pandora-like stations they create, and also buy CDs and shirts and all kinds of promotional material. They would be self-advertising and make more money than they currently do.

BUT WAIT!

What stops them from letting people upload their own CDs they made, having it tossed into the mix, let the people decide who sounds like what, let the people decide what is 'good' and make some money of all the digital sales. Well. Now you've cut out the scouts too.

You can then have online scouts to pick out the cream of the crop and offer them contracts. Then get them out to tour and all-o-that. Get them to make videos for MTV.

But no. That would only turn the music industry into the biggest business to date.

The key would be letting the big labels set their own prices. Then they are still in competition with eachother. Or they each have their own sites. Whatever.

I think you can circumvent copy protection on CDs by holding the shift key down when you insert them. I've certainly had no trouble ripping any of my 600 CDs to wma lossless, anyway.

The 1+ million songs sold on iTunes disagree with you.

I can only hope you meant billion, because 1 million would be incredibly unimpressive.

> I think you can circumvent copy protection on CDs by holding the shift key down when you insert them.

Now you've done it, you breached the DMCA and the RIAA is coming after you...

...sue me..I'm sharing pirate MP3's...

they must have had their USA credit card licenses stopped, cause I can't pay for more music.

Ooohhh, I heard about that, then thought it got revoked because I recently did just that - but I'm in Aus... must be a US only thing. Good.

Hello.

@Oddball: No the situation has changed you can legally rip your own cds.

[quote]What right does anybody have to tell me how I can use something I have legally paid for anyway?[\quote]I think the situation is worse when Sony can tell people that they can't sell items outside of selected areas.

Goodbye.

Who told you that? It's still illegal according to the official government website on copyright law. The only exceptions are copying for educational, research, and critical review perposes. And the time-shifting exception specifically states copying copyrighted material to place in a collection is forbidden. Not saying you're wrong, just saying I've not heard from anywhere that it's now legal.

Hello.

Sorry, I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure it's happened in the past few weeks/month or so.

Goodbye.

According to "the music industry", allofmp3.com --IS-- illegal and guilty of copyright infringement.

In Germany it works like this: Copying CDs for private use and backup is legal. You are even allowed to copy a CD that you do not own: It is sufficient to have the ORIGINAL CD temporarily in your possession (like a borrowed or rented original CD). This is important, it must be the original, copying a copy would be illegal. Working around a copy protection would also be illegal. So as long as you hold an original CD without copy protection in your hands, you´re good to go - even though the TV spots of the movie and music industry keep telling you something different, which basically is just a bunch of lies and FUD to intimidate the consumers.

allofmp3.com would be illegal if it operated pretty much anywhere except Russia. They comply to Russian law (they provide to the Russian Royalties collection agency, whatever they're called - if they didn't, they would have been shut down by now). It is said the Russian royalties agency pay artists and studios directly, probably bypassing the execs, marketing and lawyerheads.

As a consumer, I am buying a legal product from a legal Russian company. The RIAA don't have a leg to stand on. In any case, their qualms are with the Russian government, not allofmp3.com. They probably don't do anything in that regard for fear of the Mafia or something.

I buy all my music from MSN Music. Recently I had problems whereby I ran out of credits to play the music but I managed to sort that out with the support guys 0D2. All my tracks play now.

I've tried filesharing but the quality of the music is crap.

I only buy my music from smaller labels off of the internet or buy the CDs on sale in stores ($8 for a cd? hell yes)
