Militant HD activity with Vista Home Prem...

I've had Vista Home Premium installed now for a couple of hours. I've installed my OEM office Pro 2003, added some extra gadgets/widgets, installed all the updates for Vista and Office and a few other bits.

I've noticed that every 10 minutes or thereabouts my HD starts going crazy. It like when you copy a large file from drive to drive, that kind of activity. It lasts for about 3-5 minutes then stops.

Is this normal? Does it happem to anyone else?

Yeah but only 3GB of it is available for 32bit Vista, which is what I have. :)

It seems to have stopped now.

It's probably indexing something or other.

Several things are turned on by default in Vista. Disk defragmentation is scheduled, although MS like to choose crap times to schedule those things for, usually 2am etc, so probably not that (yet). You are almost certainly indexing files. The indexer is much more aggressive than it's ever been before.


If you'd been following its release, you'd realise that it was not in fact ready for it. Shock, horror.

I've been testing using the Vista beta for months and yes I can confirm the sudden 10 minute bursts of random harddrive activity, I thought it was bad in XP, but of course, what do you expect with +8gb bloatware on your harddrive. I guess until we get up to 8GB of RAM it'll continue.

Not Vista Home Premium.

Vista Home Premium is actually the same as Vista Business (or Small Busisness, can't remember) except without the business things of course, also a lack of Media Center (and the Xbox tie ins). But that's it.

No, every Vista DVD is exactly the same, you just get a different key on the box. Depending on what that key is for, you get different parts of Vista installed.


It was in response to 'Yes, but don't forget business users have had it for several months now...' and 'Not Vista Home Premium.' - the difference between the two are a couple of modules. The OS itself and all other modules are exactly the same, so when talking about ironing out bugs it makes little difference.

Never noticed - mind you, the hard drive is so quite and OS X is so quick, it obviously is finished in a few seconds.

I hear it's a matter of days, or weeks. Obviously it depends on the speed of your machine/hard drives and the amoutn of crap you have on them.

You only experience some delay for the index creation for Spotlight when you do an update installation of OS X Tiger over an existing system. On a clean installation you do not feel it at all. (Unlike the unfortunate guy who installed Vista Home Premium...)

Microsoft simply does not invest any time and effort into optimizing their code. That´s where there ridiculous hardware requirements come from. If you don´t believe it, just install Linux or FreeBSD on your (old) PC and see how the fast baby can fly.

Just like to say that Vista is now running smoothly. The only software that doesn't work for me is Truespace 7.11. I managed to install Truespace 6.6 with the GamePak and that's working like a charm.

The militant HD activity has stopped. Everything is running ultra fast.

From turning my PC on, XP took 1.23 minutes to boot up and then a further 3-5 minutes of loading crap once on the desktop.

From turning my PC on, Vista boots in 26 seconds and takes about 1.00 - 1.30 minutes to finish loading once in the desktop.

Now that's a big improvement.

I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandrake, Madriva winva, polka, tomla, dika and the harryah versions of Linux. Those who say that linux is better than windows need to get a reality check.

Don't even get me started on MacOSX.

I had 2. I had a mac Mini and a MacBook pro. I sold them both. Best decision I ever made.

When looking at MacOSX, it reminds me of watching paint dry. It's slow, bland and wishes it was windows. :)

Hey but if people want to keep buying Apple hardware and software then let them. I spend £1000 on a PC and get a high powered system with an industry leading operating system (windows). I bought a Mac and I paid £1600 for hardware that i could get in a PC for £1000. Not only that but they bundle in withthe worst operating system on the planet (MacOSX).

Linux is bad, but Mac OS takes the billy.

He didn't -feel- anything at all. Vista is just as snappy when it is indexing as when it isn't. He just saw the hard drive light flashing that's all.


Why would he go out of his way and spend lots of money on something he doesn't like, just to shut you up?
