Can anyone test Easter Bonus on Vista please?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Can anyone test Easter Bonus on Vista please?
Hiya, in order for Easter Bonus to go on MSN Games I have to make it vista compatible, this just means write to the user folder not the game folder which is fine. However, I can't actually test this as I don't have Vista. Is there anyone that can help me test is please? It won't be ready for a few days yet...
Also, like Holiday Bonus (original title: Xmas Bonus 2), I have to rename Easter Bonus as MSN won't accept Easter! So it's gonna be called Spring Loaded.
send me a download link for the full registered version and I'll be happy to test for you. :)
kanati@...
I'm actually at work and have pool league tonight... so it'll be a few hours before I can do any testing. So gimme a bit.
There is a thread over on indiegamer (by Retro64) - says all their games work fine on Vista (and they write to the program folder).
I don't have the final release of vista but the holiday bonus worked great, not a single glitch.
Screenshot below, I didn't put a proper picture link as my monitors native res is 1600x1200

Neither Aerial Antics or Market value demos worked properly, dodgy errors in the installer and in the games, both getting MAV's, and Market value not getting past the hi/lo spec menu at the start.
Holiday Bonus works without a glitch under Vista. I've just downloaded Easter Bonus and will test in in few minutes...
<few minutes later>
Installed O.K.
Plays O.K.
Switches between full screen/window O.K.
Just one error. A screen pops-up at the beginning and at the end of the game asking for some code and a word I don't understand. Something like "purchase...". ;-)
Clean bill of health on Vista Ultimate, at least for the demo version.
I'll also check it on one of the office computers, which is slightly less capable than what I have at home.
Barney
wow OK thanks guys so a clean bill of health hey, must have done something right ;-)
It's come to my attention that you guys may be testing with User Account Control (hey that's the same initials as in Doom!) turned off, in which case the profile and ini saving probably work fine.
Could you possibly reenabled UAC and do these two tests for me please?
1) Data is saved when you go into the option screen and change screen mode for example. If you were to exit the game after a screen mode change and then reload it, it should use the screenmode that you last selected. If it does not, then the ini file is clearly not being updated.
2) Also if you were to complete level 1, the profile would be updated with level 1 unlocked. So if you were to exit and go back in, it should take you straight to level 2, if it does not then the profile is not being updated.
GfK: OK thanks I'll check it out. It's just that Oberon media have sent me a doc explaining the common problems and saying my game must be compatible OR ELSE!
hmm just read this on the other thread:
Do your installers use a "Launch Game Now" checkbox on the final screen? I've heard that's where a lot of problems lie--the installer will ask to elevate privileges to administrator with the UAC dialog in order to install, so if you launch the game at the end it will actually launch the game as administrator too. This creates problems if you launch the game a second time as a user and it tries to change any files the game created while it was running with elevated privileges.
And my game does auto launch. So perhaps if you could run it twice there may be errors...
Can't you check for a single instance?
taumel: I already do that. You've misinterpretted. It means if you come out of the game and then launch it a second time afterwards.
Ah okay...
I've just tested it here at the office and everything works O.K.
Starting the game straight from the installer - Pass
Test 1. - Pass
Test 2. - Pass
I've also tried to exit via the red button, not via the menu. It works as expected and later the game asks me if I want to start where I stopped playing.
I had quite a few other programs working at the same time, including the defender update, NOD32 update and transcoding of a DV movie into MPEG-2 format.
Barney
wow that's great news thanks. I *really* appreciate it. Any idea if UAC is turned on in the office?
Also was reading on Indiegamer that Vista seems to detect "naughty" programs and redirect the writes to the correct folders anyway, crazy but cool!
All was done with the UAC enabled, so no worry there. Vista version is Ultimate, at home and at the office.
Barney
UAC on and off is fine...
hmm thanks very much so what was I so worried about hey? I probably should still make my framework write to the correct locations anyway...
