Earliest use of 3D in a Pop Video

Another thread had me thinking about this... then I found that 'You Tube' had one of my fav clips.

This is "Hard Woman" by the Rolling Stones - I first saw this video in the mid-late 1980's - (1986-87) I think.

Its a fantastic bit of work for the period - almost seems like it was rotoscoped based on Mick and Bianca, you can easily tell them from their movements which is quite something considering they are just coloured pipes in the video.

Not sure if it was true but when I first saw this, the guy who showed it me said it was rendered on a Cray super computer and took 6 weeks - besides the post production. It stands up very well for it's pioneering efforts I reckon, what do you guys think?

Well Rio by Duran Duran had a bouncy ball in it that may have ben cgi (of course, it may just have been a bouncy ball overlayed).

Wikipedia does seem to confirm that Money for Nothing was the first completely computer generated music vid - I guess there may have been something before that contained some CGI, though?

If they count a few splashes of computer generated color over top of live actors I guess it counts... (sorry, something about that video made me quesy for some reason).

Weird Al's "Beverly Hillibillies" had a lot more computer graphics to it - but it was a few years later (89?)

Going out of videos, the most impressive early use of computer graphics was from Star Trek II. The Genesis device presentation that Kirk, Spock, and McCoy watch was computer generated, and it was done in 83-84. (I thought that was just some other technique made to look like computer animation, but the DVD commentary said it was actually done by computer)

What I guess that I was going for was what do you remember being "wow!" - what brings back that "wow - look at that" the first time you saw something that was 3D in a pop video? And mad you dream of things to come...

Def Leppard's "Let's get rocked" was much later, but that made me say "wow - things are gonna get very interesting from here"!
But like most here, Money for Nothing was the first one I saw, and that was very impressive for the time as well.

Actually, creating a game in that sort of charming blocky retro style might be a worthwhile project.
