Test Drive UNlimited- Car Construnction interview

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Test Drive UNlimited- Car Construnction interview

I just found this, which made a good read:

though I do have to poke at this quote:

On the rendering side, we worked a lot on the body color Shaders (One year just for this one.) This is the most complicated shader in the game. Spectacular mapping/ Environmental mapping/ normal mapping/Color mapping. Hopefully our hard work and long hours on this particular aspect are obvious when you see the cars!

Um, sure! Well, the only reason I found this article was when looking to see if they fixed the fact the environmental mapping was backwards!!! And let me tell you, that looked UGLY in game. :)

'spectacular mapping'???

Specular, surely? No wonder its taken 'em a year. They've invented a new sort of mapping!

Spectacular mapping, eh? Sounds great - I want it!!! :P

There are a few things wrong with it. I don't think the article was checked or edited after it was typed into MS word! :P

Environmental mapping was backwards?

Yeah. Take a look at how the reflections behave mate. :)

Are they flipped upside down or are they just dyslexic? I'll have a look at the demo when I get a chance.

When I owned it, the reflections were moving in the wrong direction, they'd start at the back of the car and move towards the front, as the object aproached the front of the car.

I saw the reflections going from the back to the front of the cars too when I tried it in EB a few months ago. You can see it on youtube:

Not the best video to look at the reflections, but you can see it clearly on the wing mirrors from the cockpit view.

reflections going from the back to the front = spectacular mapping? :)

Spectacular SOMETHING :D

First it was realtime bumpmapping, then realtime Normalmaps,
now we finally get realtime Spectacular mapping? I never
thought I'd see the day!

Well Max3D had better have a very robust spectacular mapping
system or I won't buy it.
