Well, from someone that really is not the best firend of Open Source Zealots, I really find this whole article bullshit. The guy doesn't seem to really try to make any point, but more to appear like a smart guy. I mean seriously, the first link he provides is supposed to make us nod and say "oh damn it's too true, these guys suck", when i actually points to a page when for once you have an Open Source guy that actually bothers about usability and undestands that Linux is not the end all be all.
I've read much more inspired articles on the subject.

The one thing that made me stand up and notice open source was Ogre3D. Thats an awesome project and works well with blitzmax. Video Lan player is pretty nice too.
Other than that I have seen a lot of poorly supported mediocre programs that would put off most people that aren't willing to go in search of the few gems out there.

Personally I can't stand OGRE, but Irrlicht is Open Source too. Another cool program is OpenOfficeorg but the Mac port is a bit behind. Also AbiWord and Gimp are very nice programs. The problem is that many users really are "opensource zealots". Try to tell them something good about Mac or Windows (or closed source programs in general) and you'll get smashed.

Is that as opposed to closed source products? Mediocre programs with poor support is not an open source issue. (can you imagine the fucking damage that can ensue when the above two words decide to get together...)
Yes. Wintendo. Yeah, I've got nothing against open-source itself. Only the zealots - and those who adopt the mindset that everything should be free - really get under my skin.
Yah, free software is all fine and dandy but it is nowhere without rich corporations supporting it.
I agree that open source software can be amazing and there are many surprisingly great projects out there.
That is because people who develop free software just aim to make a program that can be the best it can be. Why? Because it's fun :)
(Doing it as a career, I imagine, is an excellent way to ruin a great pastime).
It is, from my seeing, usually the users who are zealots. Much of the time, that's because they don't get it; they have been given something for free, they should be thankful for it and they should move on instead of trying to get people to build more stuff for them for free. They don't understand that the free stuff still costs money to make and distribute, and that one cannot make a living off of it.
I have written many a rant on people who don't like proprietary drivers in Linux (which is absurd, because by their logic even the hardware with open source drivers is dangerous! Who knows what that circuitry is doing?!), and I am glad Linus has the same opinion as me...
