PS2 still worth it ?

Hi all, would you say the ps2 is still worth getting ?

I just look at the library of games, and the low price, and wonder if I should get one.

I never owned a ps2 before.

Definately worth it. I bought a Slimline PS2 that came with Pro Evo 6 for just a bit over £100. I hit Ebay and got some great deals on some final fantasy games, tekken Games and some wwe/smackdown vs raw games.

Games are cheap and there are so many good ones available your just spoilt for choice.

Apart from visuals, what's the difference between PS2, PS3 and XBox 360?

PS2: DVD only, no only marketplace system
PS3: Overpriced breadbox. Features a format that will lose the war as any Sony enforced format and will need at least another year until it has enough consoles sold to get some serious dev support. At least it is of use if you have a PSP through PSOne game downloads for like 5$ ^^
Capable of 1080p, not much better than PS2 on regular resultion

X360: sells far better than PS3 as it isn't a totally overpriced piece of hardware. (might be that the PS3 is not totally overpriced but consoles at that price range just won't sell usefully until first or second price drop)
1080p, DVD with possibility of external HD-DVD, online marketplace and out of my sight the currently best one (the arcade games are cool and not just rips of old stuff you most likely already own *grml*).
As well, not much more usefull than an XBox if you are not on HDTV. And XBox can be modded to be a full home entertainment system for 20$ ^^


All in all: If you are a casual gamer with casual TV: PS2 or Wii is currently the best choice (XBox is not really supported anymore). I just sold my original PS2 with softmod disk etc and games I didn't need to order a slim ps2 :)

If you are a hardcore gamer, who is willing to pay 60-80$ (thats the price to which those games will raise) and own a HDTV and have some bucks left, you could buy X360 or PS3. This depends on your loyality or preferences on games and the online market place.

Thats a good enough reason for me.



The same thing that makes a PS1, N64, and Saturn different from one another. And the same goes for a Genesis, SNES, and TG16. Also the same differences between an NES, SMS, and 7800...the list goes on...otherwise, we all might as well still be playing the 2600.

Consoles are only as good as their games. The great thing about the PS2 is that there are tons of appealing games available no matter what genre/s you're into.

I bought a slimline PS2 a couple of weeks ago and the sheer quantity of fantastic Japanese RPGs (which is the only genre of console games that I play) that are available is staggering - and most of them can be bought really cheaply too.

I bought an ugly old style PS2 (who cares what it looks like) from GFK last year. Probably played it more than any other console since. Cheap, tried and tested games are cool. :)

Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy 12, and Star Ocean 3. If those aren't three compelling reasons to buy a PS2, I don't know what would be. Of course as JustLuke points out, there are just so many great Jap RPG's that I could probably think of fifty compelling reasons.

I always buy my consols just before or after their newer brethern have been releasd.

Absolutely! PS 2 games have never been better! The developers have really got to grips with the machine now, Guitar Hero is fantastic. GT continues to thrill every time I play it, there are soooooo many triple A games to choose from.

Sony cannot be faulted with the PS2. BTW I am a real Nintendo fan but PS2 rocks (as does XBOX! Wii and Xbox360!)

Oh yeah, it's also predicted that the PS2 will far outsell the console that was supposed to replace it in the PS3. For the next gen wars, I'd say that the X360 may just pull it off in 2007. Of course, that may be neck and neck with Nintendo, as we all well know. I also have the slimline PS2, and it seems to have better backwards compatibility than anything for the PS1 games, that much I can tell ya. I salvaged as many of my original PS1 games as I could, as well as adding popular PS2 games to it. However, with the X360, the console is great, and backwards compatibility is somewhat improving, but since backwards compatibility is a pain in the butt, I could care less about the original Xbox games anymore, I have yet to trade in the last few from that console. I'm looking forward to a Wii myself, just stay in stock sometime soon, then I'll be sure to trade up my GameCube for it.

Actually, that's incorrect, quite the reverse. A number of PS1 games which work with the old-style PS2 don't work with the slimline. But then there are a bunch of PS2 budget titles which don't work with the slimline either.

Since backwards compatibility in some capacity is pretty standard these days, I tend to skip consoles. I had an N64 so I didn't get a ps1 which I knew could have backwards compatiblity in later systems and if not, could pick it up then anyway cheap. I got a ps2 about a year after it came out and played all ps1 games for a good year (excluding dark cloud which was the only half decent game on the ps2 for a loooong time) I played a ton of older ps1 games like the final fantasys and such. Then About when FFX came out I started to buy ps2 games.

Soon as I have the cash, I'll pick up a wii and play twilight princess and a TON of gamecube titles I've wanted to play over the entire console cycle.

Since I've completely trashed the entire ps2 lineup already. That's right, I've played every game that got better than an average score from most places and just about every RPG thanks to gamefly. Most I didn't finish, and some I totally pwned.

I'm not too worried that sony won't be making consoles in the next cycle, as I don't expect to see ANY good games on the thing. But if there are some (FF13 perhaps?) I'll pick it up after sony dies in a couple years.

I fully expect sony to ruin themselves in the next few years. They might still exist, but they will have damaged their clout so much that no one will trust them again. With Blu-ray and Ps3 failures on the horizon, not to mention a few other key potential failures in their PC and phone lines. I'm saying goodbye to sony. I don't trust them anymore.

I'll never own an xbox, just on principal. Xbox never had a single game on it I wanted to play that didn't come out on the PC (sept maybe halo 2 and it isn't worth the cost of the the entire system) And none of the games on the 360 appeals to me either.

So yeah. If you wanna pick up a ps2, now is a good time. Hit the entire back-cat and there are at least 50 must play games and another 500 ones worth bothing to find.

Absolutely, PS2 is still the best console regarding number of games. The list of great games is staggering and you can still play all the best PS1 games on it too. I must have clocked up some 5000 hours of game time on mine.

It's worth it for God of War and Shadow of the Colossus alone.

Mine drive has been scratching game discs - Guitar Hero won't play some of the early tracks now :(

I think we will HAVE to get a new PS2 when we can afford it as we have so many great games.

That's the first i've heard of older PS2 games not working on the Slimline- I've had the opposite happen quite a bit, swapped it for a slimline, and all the probs went away.

I picked up the PS2, and these 2 games, both are awesome, having loads of fun so far :)

There are a plethora of games I am gonna have to wade through, and that is not a problem at all :)

There's nothing in that list I'm worried about but I guess there could be more games out there...

So what others are absolute must haves in your opinion, these games are just so cheap now.

I will be on the look out for some of the rpg's mentioned.

They are ALL really good games which got high reviews and they should all be really cheap now. Only duffers are Weakest Link and Gauntlet Dark Legacy (maybe) and
Gradius III and IV (maybe).

I didn't say anything about older ones. They're actually relatively new. Several of the activision budget games and a few others. But they're not even old games, so there's no real excuse. It came as a surprise to me too, but a friend of mine was complaining that she can't play Jak and Daxter or Ty the Tasmanian Tiger or one of those cutesy platformers because she has a slimline PS2 now. I thought she was mistaken, but she gave me the link to the page on Sony's site which lists which PS1 and PS2 games will not work on the new slimline PS2's.

ps2's are about $130 new here, only the price of two new gen games. So if you like the games for it then why not buy one.

BTW, can the slimline ones be chipped to play games from other regions?

I bought a slim line PS2 for the purpose to get it chipped.
I've had no problems with my slimline at all since I bought an external usb fan for a tenner. I've also never heard of games not working on the slimline compared to the original one. Weird. Chipping is of the upmost recommendation, because then you have even more games you can buy, most of which never see the light of day outside of Japan. My chip features speedier loading and you can disable the Sony whooshing screen, games are already activated and loading within 3 seconds of turning on the machine.

What CHip did you get Enay? I've been to MemtechSolution and have found a solderless one that apparently is the best you can get. I don't know about all this stuff though.

Did you get someone to chip your PS2 for you or did you do it yourself?

I can't remember, it was a pretty advanced one though and it cost almost as much as the console itself. But it can do other mad stuff like run programs downloaded from the net and do homebrew. But I just use it for being able to play games on any region. I wouldn't have put it in myself as the procedure is particularly complicated and risky! Solderless ones are usually dumb because you often still need to boot disk it. Which takes away the purpose of having a chip in the first place.

I gave the guy the money and PS2 the day I bought the slimline and then picked it up a few days later. Only downside to shis chip is that it makes my PS2 overheat within 10mins of use because the slimlines have no fan, still runs ok, but then if you switch it off or reset, it won't come back on again until the PS2 is cooled down. But of course I bought an external USB fan and it's never faulted once in 3 years. Can't complain with that.

Gabriel: That list doens't have Jak and Daxter in, only JakX racing so basically it sounds like more games that are on the lsit don't work...Jak and Daxter is pretty old now but it's great.

PS2 is worth it for the GT series alone, then of course you can go all japanese style gamer, get yourself a couple of dance mats and have a whale of a time with the kids.
