Everquest

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Everquest

After 5 long years I am officially done. It's the reason behind my mysterious absense around 2002 while I was developing airwar 1946. I have quit and I no longer have my accounts. That game isn't family friendly. It was a personal choice and an easy one to make because I don't want to miss my kids growing up. And as anyone who has played EQ knows, when you raid 5-6 nights a week for 5 hours a night...it's easy to lose touch with what's going on around you.

Now I can get on with Orbicus and other hobbies (my family). Oh, and going to bed at 10pm is great too. I'm really enjoying the extra sleep.

IPETE2, expect an email soon. :)

Well done.

MMORPG's do seem to waste an unhealthy amount of a person's life. I'm glad you are back to spending more time with what should be the most important thing to you - your family.

agree.. thoe i still sits more infront computer than TV.

3 years and still going in my MMORPG (FFXI) ;/.

Isn't quite life threatening to me, just I spend my "boredom" time on it rather then moping about the house being bored.

But then again I'm just a high-school student who seems to manage good grades, guess it would be a big problem though if I had a life and family to look after....

Gotta love them scheduled events where everyone shows up 1hr late right? Friggen' happens everytime with my current guild.....

Which is quite an unfortunate "requirement" for the genre.

I just recently clocked in 5811 hours in my game the other day, 2/3rds of a year spent playing the damn thing. o.O

Will be quitting myself personally (or playing it a crapload less) once I get accepted into my desired college, as I'd have to blow my boredom time working up my artistical skills.

I remember reading a news story yesterday about a guy who just reached lvl 70 in the new WoW expansion. Since the expansion was released on the 15th, and he reached 70 on the 17th, that says alot about him.

Sorry, but some people are just a waste of existance (and bandwidth).

I only ever had fun playing Ultima Online. It ate my life and caused the flunking out of a school along the way.

I played Everquest at around the same time as I got into ultima. Way back when UO was only a year or so old.

I didn't like EQ. I don't get the interest either. I just found it boring. Way to combat heavy. The first 3 years I played UO I didn't fight things.. I mean. Sure I killed the random thing while I was out doing other things. But combat wasn't my focus. I really didn't even bother with the actual stats much, either. I did have a GM begger, and a GM cook. Cooking is a worthless class, and a GM musician, which was the begger, it is a requirement to be a begger, cause you can't be successful at begging without entertaining the NPC first.

Yeah. So I couldn't take the boringness of EQ. And the shite graphics. I mean really. that was back when 3D was cool cause it was 3D, and all the monsters are like 4 polygons and friggin Meridian 59 (Which I have a copy of btw) looks better.

I'm afraid to tell my new girlfriend I play WoW.

I'm afraid to tell my new girlfriend I play WoW.

I'm sure many plastic women have to deal with the thought of their 'boyfriends/creators' playing WoW :-P

By definition, a WoW player doesnt date, they keep cans of vasoline and a sharpe next to the bed.

It all comes down to moderation, I have played Everquest going on 7 years now and still have fun. I play daily for an hour or so and still have time for my Wife and bairns, though it does help being retired :)

In those 7 years I have met many genuine folks and others that are completly bonkers.

Sooo: moderatrion is the key and if someones life is soo unfulfilling that they have to play an MMPORG most of their waking life, then they really should go get help.

and now... they have announced a new expansion. :)

An hour a day for 7 years equals 116 days you've sat at that computer. And I mean 116 days at 24 hours a day. Not good.

I actually spend most of the day sitting in front of some type of monitor/TV. Having spent most of my working life in the IT industry I have spent even more time infront of computers of varying types than most over the past 20 - 30 odd years :)

Soooo it will be a lot more that 116 days...

I shudder to think how much time and money I have spent comatose after a night out when I was in the Royal Navy or as a Police Officer before that :)

Nowadays: COmputing is my hobby again and I still have Plenty of time for other interests.

In the final analysis it was my time spent infront of a computer that allowed me to retire early :)

Bah, you old fart...nm. No use in yanking your chain.

You should take up astronomy as one of your other hobbies...which I hope also includes strip clubs!

Btw, I'll retire when I'm 38. =p

Heheh, Funny yoo should say that Chroma, I iz gonna purchase a telescope for next winter, I have just not told the wife yet :)

Strip Clubs....... That was the Navy days, it was lot safer then too ;)

The meade lx200 is a really nice scope. I'm in the market for one now that i've sold both my everquest accounts. I got quite a bit for them too which at least lets me recoupe "something" for all my toil.

I have a 12" LX200GPS... vera nice scope indeed. But you'll need to spend nearly as much as the scope to get everything you'll need to do it RIGHT. Filters, lenses, superwedge...

Is it just as bad to spend hundreds of hours working on an MMO? ;)

I want one of them thar telescopse that I can hook up to my PC , so that I can sit inside the house toasting my toes on my coal fire, whilst searching for ET :)

I like Meade Scopes, a bit pricey but worth the dosh... just have to convince the wife... :(

I'm actually gonna go with the Zhumell 12 inch Dobsonian. At $799 it's about the right price and it has gotten awesome reviews. I'll the the more expensive scope possibly in a few years when I retire.

On topic, I've just quit WoW after 18 long months. I think I've finally come to my senses what a terrible waste of our precious lives such games are. Can't help feeling a little nostalgic already but I'm sure it'll give me more energy to focus on games dev.

on the girlfriend thing. My girlfriend plays WoW more than I do. We've only started playing about a month ago, but we still have a social life, so it's fine so far....

Good for you sonicfactory. I get sick when I think of how much time I wasted playing everquest. But at least I sold both my accounts and recouped $1200. That's what I'm using to finance my telescope (which I'll probably be ordering later tonight).

can u hook the telescope uo to your PC? if so, post some pictures online

Yup yoo shoor can. Some models of Meade Telescopes have a computer control built in. Yoo can use can control the telescope with the hand set provided or run a cable from the scope to your PC. The one I saw years ago had a serial conection, but I daresay the modern one will be USB. I will be looking into this more closely in the summer and will hopefully have one set up next winter :)

yeah that was my biggest problem with telescopes. That you have to sit in the freezing cold to get the bst sky for it. If I could put the telescope outside, then sit in the comfort of my study.

The only MMORPG i've ever played with "City of Villains". And after realizing that 2 months suddenly slipped away, I realized that I needed to stop. Never played another MMORPG since then....

I actually bought the Zhumell 12inch Dobsonian. At $800 it fit in my budget and it got 5/5 star reviews so lets hope all those people are right. I'll have to get a video adapter that'll let me put what I see on screen. I was gonna get it anyways. I'll definitely post some pics but it'll be a couple weeks or so.

It should be here in about 3-5 days!! Yippee!!!

@Neuro: Same thing happened to me but 5 years slipped away...makes me wanna vomit.

I guess it means that i should not go and get World of Warcraft that I've been considering these past couple of days....
