X360 Died :(

Playing a albiet boring game of GRAW seeing as there was nothing else to do and it froze :/

Rebooted to have it freeze on the spinning 360 logo with tons of small square misplaced corruptional stuff. 3 red lights flashing on the front. Looked up the code (Sync+Eject) and its 0102. Basically the console has no idea whats happening to it. Some say its moisture, others say its the cold solder on the Ram BGA's.

Left it in the hot water cupboard for a couple of hours and it worked fine. Didnt play it for a few days and the same problem. I reckon its moisture, but I'm not taking any risks and I'm going to get it replaced while its under warrenty.

W00T. Just waiting for new console to arrive :)

Friend of mine just had his X360 go 3 red lights flashing too. His wasn't within warranty though, so he's had to buy another. Another friend bought one just before Xmas and he had to return that because the power switch was broken. Looking around the big gamer forums, there do seem to be an awful lot of problems still.

Hope I have better luck with mine.

I've only had it around 8 months. I hope they replace mine with one thats based on the new fabrication for less heat. Aparently they like to use refurbished models though :(

I cant really say my room is moist, it has plently of free air flow, desk doesnt feel damp, etc. Aparently a few people reported that their heatsyncs still had the plastic wrapping on them :/ Says something about mass marketed asian construction :D

Cant wait to get it back, you dont really know what you've got till its gone.

@Gabrial: Has your friend still got his old one? Tell him to wrap it in a towel or blanket and leave it running for around half an hour. Otherwise put it in a large box with the dehumidifier. If that doesn't work its probably toast.

I'm not sure. He definitely ordered the new one, but I'll tell him about your suggestion in case he kept the old one as well.

I think the 3 lights failure is quite famous, a lot of people have had it happen and microsoft replace the console

I never got the 3 lights but I sure did get the infamous SOD quite often. My friend got the 3 lights once but his 360 still survived....

I'd say more often than not the 3 ROL is probably related to poor ventilation and moisture buildup. Authough I cant be sure in my case (freezing on 360 logo seems like the GPU is going) I'd just rather get a new one instead of paying $600 later when it turns out it was more serious and my warrenty's run out.

they just changed the warranty from 90 days to a year for free replacement on all 360 consoles now BTW.

I think it died on day of release. Ho ho ho.

Seriously though, I've never ever bought a console that broke on me. Megadrive, N64, SNes, PS1, PS2, Gamecube, all the handhelds etc. Even my ten year old PS1 that now has a dead lense, can't say that died over anything other than probably 10000 hours of use over 10 year period.

But with X-Box and X-Box360, I know many people who've had problems with their console crashing/breaking/taking it back/replacements etc. SURELY it's a coincidence? X-Box consoles can't be that unreliable.

heh, every single one of the 11 PS2 test kits we had at work proved faulty one way or another, Usualy related to the DVD drive or the power supply.

It's common for people to be on their 2nd or 3rd PS2. Most of the other consoles have been pretty sturdy though, including the riginal Xbox. The 360 hasn't been great with the overheating troubles early on, and the Wii has been reported to crash fairly often. Same goes with PS3 kiosks.

I'm on a 2nd PS2 but that's only because I got the 2nd one chipped and fancied a new lens and smaller console, the old one still works fine.

I guess those PS2 test kits were just using cheaper parts as they were test kits. Did you ever gety to try out the PS3 test kits? Sounded like a bomb about to go off it was so noisy, which is why it's quite surprising that they're now pretty quiet.

Its a cupboard where we hang our towels. the "Water" bit comes from the fact we have a hot water tank in there. The heat is used to dry clothes etc.

Don't know about Test kits being any different than regular PS2's. They are simply retail PS2's for developers that are already chipped by sony so you can run unlicenced code etc and at the time cost $1000 each.

The 3 red lights is covered by a recall. Mine was completely paid for including pick up from the house shipping. Anyone that had to pay for it should be reimbursed. I bought my 360 on the opening day and just sent it back for free last week ... way outside of the standard warranty.

That may be true under certain circumstances, but it is definitely not true under all circumstances. The friend I was referring to was in touch with Microsoft about the issue and the reply was "you're out of luck".

Actually i've noticed that lately. The 360 kiosks are usually down for obivous reasons, but i've seen a few PS3 kiosks down also. Which is strange cause I ran the PS3 at longers periods than the 360 and I never had any noticeable issues.....yet.

Didn't have any problems yet. Then again, since my X360 came from Wal-Mart, I'm guessing that Wal-Mart bought X360s seem to be the worst when it comes to longevity. You get what you pay for, I suppose...

Regarding the 360's from initial launch- those ones had problems. I think regardless of warrenty if it was purchased before January 2006 it would get replaced anyway.

When I had an original Xbox it ran for years. Eventually it packed up and started giving weird errors. I softmodded the thing with a 120GB HDD and it's run well ever since. XBMC & DVD2XBOX is the best.

I dunno if this would work, but I have an external 160 GB HDD, and it IS USB enabled. Would external HDDs work on an X360 at all? Would it recognize it, and use that as a storage device? Does it automatically format the external HDD for X360 use?

Maybe you should try it. But from what i understand, theres no way to upgrade the 360 HD - aside from buying 3rd party 360 specific upgrade HDs...

@(X360)WedgeBob: Yes that would work, format it as a large Fat32 drive (you will need dos/fdisk or some other utility capable of creating Fat32 partitions over 32GB). Plug it into the USB port and away she goes. Its great for getting your movies/mp3s/pictures onto your Xbox.

So as I take it, there's no need to buy the 120 gig X-Box 360 anymore...
