I've gone back to Truespace :)

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/I've gone back to Truespace :)

Having tried demos of various 3D Modelling/Animation/Rendering applications I decided between Truespace 7 and Softimage XSI Foundation.

Being that I was an avid Truespace 6.6 user and learned the package well I decided to purchase Truespace 7 again. I got a refund for it last time because there were a few showstopping bugs in it but all these have been adressed and Truespace 7 is again the choice for budget 3D software.

What about 3D Studio Max 9? Well, it's too expensive for me and I know for a fact, having used the demo, that I wouldn't use 90% of the features. So even if i could afford it I wouldn't buy simply because it would not comne in that usefull.

Are there any other Truespace users here?

If there are, what do you think of Truespae 7.1?

Sensible chap,

Only spend on (a) what you will use (b) what you can afford!

I love 3DS Max but I don't use 75% of it, and the 25% of it I do use, I don't use very well.

IPete2.

I am back using TS6.6 again after purchasing Ts7 and Vray. I am waiting on TS 7.5 being released before I reinstall and give it another go.

I was and still am bitterly disapointed with TS7 and feel that I essentially purchased another copy of TS66 with a fancy new Player that was and still is next to useless.

As a Long time user of Truespace from version 1 to 7 this is the first time that I felt I had been hoodwinked. I intended to send the whole box set back to Caligari, but when Roman made the gesture of the free upgrade to TS7.5 for those of us who pre-ordered I decided to hang on.

The money had already been spent anyway :)

Soo I am still hanging in there, Truespace is a very powerfull app and those that conquered the interface can produce some nice stuff.

Though personally I have migrated to XSI Foundation I am still hopeful for Truespace.

I am the same Garion as the one on the TS forums. :)

Cheers

I went for XSI.

After the horrid experience I had with gamespace - it crashes consistently on many operations, its renderer is dog slow, animation is pretty horrid to use and it has an interface which although I'd started to become accustomed to is extremely clunky to do even basic actions, I decided to go with XSI Foundation.

XSI Foundation has rarely crashed (albeit not never - but at least I don't hold my breath before I try an action) but more importantly it is a joy to use to model & texture with, extremely easy to use and interact with, has mental ray as its renderer.

I picked up TS 7.1 for free as a part of Proteam (when 6.6 was the newest thing out) and did some beta testing for it. Unfortunately, my 3D card couldn't handle the shaders it needs for the player view, and the program ran (and still runs) like a dog. Even though I was hopeful for a better interface (especially the 3D controls, which stink) TS7 did nothing to address them... and even added a cluttered interface to boot.

There are some interesting ideas in the program, and I'll always have a place in the ol' heart for Truespace, but I think they lost the plot a bit somewhere along the line, by adding all the fancy bits and bobs, and forgetting about plain old usability. These days I tend to use a fair few Daz3D programs like Carrara, Daz Studio and Bryce, to go along with XSI.

If I was going to go with anything else, it'd be Modo. But, I can't afford that one right now, so I'll wait for version 302 ;)

I'm still using TS5 because I can't afford 6 or 7. :(

I like truespace. Especially 7.11. I guess I'm just used to it because the first modelling app I used was Truespace 3.1. Then I bought truespace 5, then 6 and it's upgrades and now I'm using TS7.1.

The change between version is massive, especially with TS7.1. I've got the GamePaK also which adds extra GameDev features to Truespace. It also saves b3d files.

You either love it or you hate it.
:)

Ive got ts5 and gamespace, never really got on with either. It does have some good modelling tools though, but i really dislike the camera controls.

I found blender (not for the faint hearted) and am happy with that.

I used to like Truespace as well. Then I bought V6 and actually tried to do some serious work with it. Long story short, I encountered too many bugs and general problems for me to continue with it.

The decider was when they released a patch and it broke the directx import/export. After patching, TS started telling me that I needed to buy an upgrade pack in order to get my directx export ability back. They said it was a mistake, but it looked like a try-on. At that point I said a few choice words and uninstalled.

I'm still angry at the hours I wasted trying to get the bloody thing to work properly.

If you search back through these forums you'll find my Truespace rant I did a few years ago. Still holds today.

BTW DAZ3D is offering up Carrara 5 pro $197.00 if you spend $29 to become a platinum club member. It's awesome and very full featured. Renders are very fast. Makes landscapes, renders out skyboxes, exports trees from it's built in tree editor yadda, yadda.

It ain't C4D but then again it's a lot less cash.
