I hate Quicktime, it's a thing that doesn't go away. I can't remove it from starting up, even if I use msconfig. What's a good .mov reader?

I don't recommend Media Player Classic (VLC works fine!), but that can be deselected in the installer.
I like that it looks nice, and it doesn't require me to pay money for stupid features like saving things that I'm viewing with the browser plugin. (In fact, I'm opposed to charging money for the flagship file viewer for /any/ media format... I can't see how it is remotely sensible).

I switch over from Quicktime, and am greeted moments later by "Maya 7.0 Personal Learning Edition Requires Quicktime 6.5 or greater"

Again, I really question how Apple considers it sane to ignorantly cripple viewers for a file format which they obviously intend to have used in a variety of places. How can Quicktime possibly be considered viable when there are other formats which do just as well and do not end up locked down to a program which is split between Paid and Free versions around a few silly features?
I should probably report that Apple's web site no longer crashes my web browser now that I have stopped using Apple's media player. (Strange, huh?)
It's not like Apple couldn't afford to make the thing more viable...
For now, they should probably consider themselves lucky that most users have no idea Quicktime even exists, let alone that it is built by Apple. (The more upsettingly daft ones just assume it's one of the various funny ways that the operating system shows stuff).
Anyway, QT Alternative is a great thing, until you bump into programs that insist on using Quicktime for no apparent reason :(

QuickTime is not just a media player, it is an entire framework for multimedia applications. So if you "jump into programs that insist on using Quicktime for no apparent reason", they probably use this very framework that you do not want to have on your computer...
I hate quicktime too. Allthough it can be used for all kinds of things not just video.

Picklesworth, Maya must be using some components that aren't a part of the default QT Alt package - I have QT dependant software running fine with QT Alt on my machine... iTunes for example (although it required installing QT, then uninstalling it, then installing QT Alt, because iTunes and QT are not seperable, grumble)... Chances are you could find the 'get more plugins' part of the QT config and try and download what you need from there.
Nope, looks like it is just using it for video playing. It hasn't moaned since, so not as bad as it looked. Maya PLE seems to come with a bunch of tutorial videos in Mov format.
