Anyone else running a 3.03 OE-A PSP?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Anyone else running a 3.03 OE-A PSP?
Is this custom firmware the best or what? Now I can play every PSP game as normal, plus pretty much every piece of homebrew, plus all my Playstation 1 games ( including compressed ) and I don't need any loaders, emulators, firmware fakers or anything. Just whack it on a memstick and run it.
Final Fantasy VII on PSP, here I come.
Nope, I'm running 3.03OE-B
ISO Compression!!!
it's awesome, I can now put my otherwise useless PSX cd's in and play them on the bus :)
There are problems with FFVII though- it runs however, so enjoy!
There is no 3.03OE-B, 3.03 OE-A2 is the latest. 3.02 had an OE-B, but 3.03 has only been revised to OE-A2 which is what I'm running.
I couldn't find FF7, must be packed away somewhere, so I went for Tales of Destiny instead. I'm not compressing them though, as I understand emulation can be less than perfect with compressed ones.
LOL. yeah, thats right! i'm on 3.03OE, sounds like i got an update to do too!
Compression isn't affecting emulation, i've done extensive testing on it and never come across an issue, if a bug is in fully compressed, it's still there at compression 0.
I have a crapload of my PSX iso's now, i just wish that Popstation GUI which had a Pal to NTSL fix was updated!!!
I meant in terms of emulation speed rather than bugs. I was under the impression ( perhaps incorrectly ) that the overhead of decompressing the game while you play could make it choppy, particularly in videos and whatnot, and that you had to overlock to compensate.
Most of my PSX games ( FF7 excluded ) are NTSC so I should be able to convert them well, with a bit of luck.
I have yet to see slowdown.
In fact, most of the NTSC games seem to run a little faster than the PAL counterpart! (but the game must be that way, because when, in Destruction Derby, theres a countdown, the seconds aren't sped up or anything...)
Yep, that makes sense, since NTSC is a lower resolution than PAL. That's why a lot of those PAL conversions would have the horizontal bars, because they couldn't keep the speed up otherwise.
Looking forward to this once someone finds means of installing custom firmware on v3.00 (since my current version, 2.71 seems half-abandoned) in the near-future, as I currently have no means of PSX-emulation, what with my petty 512mb card here, although those upcoming 8gb cards are nice looking....
I'm just a bit shocked that it didn't take long for homebrew coders to crack Sonys security on the thing, and how Sony didn't make the emulated PSX games run on a per-title basis.
(rather than just an emulator which you just plug ISOs into)
If your current version is 2.71SE, can't you upgrade from there? I was under the impression you could install 3.02 OE-A from 2.71SE just the same as I did from 1.5 ( except of course that you would use the Game150 folder instead of the game folder. )
3.03OE is a custom firmware than can run anything. it actually installs on the PSP, not inside devhook, I see no reasno for you not to do it?
Newer motherboards can now successfully be downloaded too with a special tool :)
I recalled custom-firmwares being displayed as a corrupted file on the PSP memstick?
Unless the coder of 3.03 (Dark-Alex) found means around that...
I got a launch-PSP here so it would work with next to no risk of bricking, just the main factor being the mem-card space.
[EDIT] I got the real 2.71 here though, don't think I got any means of doing said update.
Genexi2,
You can downgrade 2.71 firmwares now. They found an exploit for it months ago. You need to check what PSP motherboard you have (Check inside the UMD drive, look for a number on the circuit board visible on the right hand side... if it's there, then you have a new PSP. These are harder to downgrade but recently became doable!)
If you have a PSP board with no number, you have the older one, which is much easier to update.
Read about it here:
http://pspupdates.qj.net/Get-it-Now-Bug-Fix-for-2-71-Downdater-Downgrader/pg/49/aid/64268now I wouldn't say to attempt it if you have the newest motherboard, but if you have the original motherboard it works wonders!
First, you need to enable homebrew on your 2.71 PSP:
http://dl.qj.net/Homebrew-Enabler-for-2.71-Revision-D-(HEN-D)-Hacks-Exploits-PSP/pg/12/fid/11444/catid/114Then you need to:

A look around has found that many users have successfully downgraded their TA-82 psps and installed 3.03OE-A' on them. I won't go into detail on that here but you can look around the site above :)
I downgraded my PSP from 2.71 to 1.5 on Christmas day. I used the easy-installer, but having seen what's involved in manual installations, I'd probably do it manually if I had it over. Really easy to do. As Cygnus says, even if you have the dreaded TA-82 mobo, it's fine. Just don't go over 2.71 ( 2.8 can be downgraded but it's much more likely to brick ) and just be sure to check whether or not you have a TA-82 because the downgrade procedure will be different.
I'm using 3.03OE as well. I was able to rip and play Legacy of Kain and Resident Evil2 on my psp *YAY*.
I'm looking forward to the 8GB MS Pro Duo so I can play all my PS1 games: FF7, Madden2002, SiphonFilter, Tekken 3, GT2, Mortal Kombat 4, and Driver 2.

'eh, that downgrader for 2.71 seems an awful handful manually, more-so since I have to find an actual 1.50 user to get a copy of a specific file off him for.
That easyinstaller you used bypass the means of having to do that Gab?
You shouldn't need an actual 1.50 user. The file required is ( I believe ) legal to distribute. The easy installer I used came with all files. I'll see if I can find where I got it from. Expect an email because I don't want to post these links on BRL's site.
Last I read said files weren't legal to distribute.
But I personally couldn't give a damn (about the legalness of the files) since my PSP was a v1.50 out of the box, as to which the files I require come from.
If the PSP was more like the GP2X, it would have been a damned fine homebrew system without all the caveats it currently has in order to run homebrew.
damn, 2.82 firmware here.
I hope they downgrade it.
you can downgrade that too (I think)? Or was that when they finally patched the hole....
Heh, appeared I had 2.81 here, not 2.71, damn that Metal Gear Solid:PO.
I get to wait until they find some tricks around the later builds then.
Pretty sure you can't downgrade 2.81 or 2.82. I think there's a downgrader for 2.80 but it's got a better than average chance of bricking even then.
What firmware do I need to start with.
I'm going to buy a PSP and sell my older one on Ebay.
1.5 for safety :)
I hope the shop has a second hand one with 1.5 on.
They won't mind me checking first, so it shouldn't be too bad.
You're unlikely to find a 1.5 because they're quite desirable and fairly rare. Anything below 2.71 is fine. The 2.71 downgrader seems to be very safe as long as you read the instructions.
If you can find a picture on how to check for TA-082 beforehand, that would be good too. You only have to open the UMD and have a little peek inside at the mobo.
I've managed to get a psp with 2.50 firmware :-)
Do I have to upgrade it to 2.71 to downgrade it, or can I do it straight from 2.50
Yes, find the 2.71 update and do that first. Then downgrade from 2.71 to 1.5, and then it's up to you whether you go straight to 3.03 OE-A or to 3.02 OE-A first.
If you go straight to 3.03 OE-A, you have to do less flashing, so theoretically less risk.
However, 3.02 OE-A apparently installed a restore function so that you can always get the PSP working again even if a flash goes wrong.
I did it the long way and went through 3.02 OE-A, 3.02 OE-B, 3.03 OE-A and then finally 3.03 OE-A2, but it's up to you which you prefer.
Sweet, now running 3.03 OE-A
Thanks a lot.
Looks like 3.03 OE-B is out now:
http://pspupdates.qj.net/3-03-OE-B-Released-Movie-Madness-/pg/49/aid/78858Anyways, I'm thinking of getting a PSP. Would be great to play at work when I'm suposed to be working. LOL! Anyways, which PSP's can and cant be updated to the latest firmware. Is it to do with the motherboard, current firmware on it etc.
As far as I know, anything under 2.71 can be downgraded. You just need to know whether your motherboard is TA-082 or not.

If you do have one, you have to use a different downgrader, and you have to have HEnD ( Homebrew Enabler Version D ) in order to run the downgrader.
If you don't have one, you get the standard 2.71 downgrader and you won't need to use HEnD, the downgrade package will include everything you need.
Nothing about 2.71 is ( safely ) downgradeable and nothing between 2.0 and 2.71 is ( safely ) downgradeable either. So don't get anything above 2.71 and if you get anything between 2.00 and 2.71, get the 2.71 update first.
I think there was already a simple and reliable 2.00 to 1.5 downgrader, so if you should happen to get one at or below 2.0 ( unlikely, but possible ) then I think you can downgrade from 2.0.
Also just wondering is it only Firmware 1.5 that is capable of running homebrew/emulators or can the 3.03 OE-A also run homebrew?
So basically, both the TA-801 and the TA-802 can run 3.03 OE-A provided you have a firmware below 2.71 and you use the HEnD if you've got a 802?

And providing that you use the different downgrade package if you have 082, yes.

3.03 OE-A can run everything you can run in 1.5 as well. Moreover, you don't need DevHook or HenD or any kind of loaders. It just runs straight from the mem stick.
Essentially these new custom firmwares are hybrids. When you run the flash creator program, you'll see that it takes a 1.50 update and a 3.0x update and combines them to form a new update. Then you run the actual flash program which puts the newly created hybrid into Flash rom.
Now anything which goes in PSP/GAME150 is run under 1.50 firmware rules and anything which goes in GAME303 is run under 3.03 firmware rules. PSP/GAME can be set to run under the rules or either firmware, but defaults to 3.03, I think.
Anyway, bottom line, 3.03 OE-A2 ( or 3.03 OE-B now, I guess ) is the perfect firmware. It has all the advantages of 1.5, plus all the advantages of 3.03 plus a few advantages that neither of them have separately.
Freaking awesome.
*Leiden runs out to buy a PSP*
I'd updated to 3.03 OE-B straight after 3.03 OE-A and I'm so happy playing my PSX games on my PSP.
Then switching to play my SNES games.
Just amazing.
Seriously PSP has got to be the best handheld console out. Go the hackers/DarkAlex. People like them let you get years more entertainment from your purchase.
