I can't beleive clicking X downloads more spyware?

This may be old news but something I just found out and experianced. I was in the blitz showcase and went in to a thread I was interested in. The person has his download hosted on one of them free webspace providers.

Anyway, a popup flashed when i visited the site to download his program. When I clicked X to close the popup it immediately spawned 10 other popups and a confirmation on whether I wanted to download some crap.

So, if you don't know, clicking X isn't always the way to go to get rid of a popup. ALT + F4 should be used instead.

How the hell do they hijack the X(close) button anyway?

er... technically alt f4 wouldn't work either. Sounds like it uses the onunload in JS

I know... its retarded. Glad I'm using Linux right now.

Nice! I thought to myself recently "is there a browser that stops all of those dodgy scripts that no one cares about which are mainly used to spread spyware?". Guess I've found an answer :-)

The old OnUnLoad spam trick. Thought none is using it anymore.

It is rather nice. Mildly annoying when you go to sites that need it the first time, but you get through your common ones pretty quick and then it's completely innocuous.

IETab is also very handy - for those sites that refuse to give in to the fox.

I've seen more spam popups actually open a borderless window with an IMAGE of a bordered window in it, than use the OnUnLoad trick. Of course, clicking anywhere on the image (including the X area) spams more popups.

Unfortunately there's quite a few 'harmless' yet poorly written websites who's entire navigation menu won't function without Javascript...

But the beauty of NoScript is that you can turn JavaScript back on at the click of a button (well, two clicks actually), and get things working again. As I say, minor annoyance the first time you visit a site, but completely innoccuous thereafter.

I never has problem with popups cause my FireFox blocks em all.

So i dont understand why use old web broser like Explorer.
