I don't have an account there, but I have a friend that does. Her stuff can be found here :)

Anyone here own it?
No. It's a community website for artists.

And since we're showing off other peoples galleries: http://majah.deviantart.com/gallery/

Thanks for the information Tom.

Well I'll just share this information because I think it's harmless but VERY interesting. And it's absolutely NO coincidence either.

Everyone here knows I've been working on a game called Orbicus for roughly 6 months now. A piece of art popped up on www.skinbase.org by someone called fatj that caught my eye instantly. So I looked at his user profile and saw that he is called MisterFatJ on deviantart.com.

The title of his art is called Orbicus Triplicus. And it was added a bout a month after my first screenshot was available here in a post. Take a look at my pic in the gallery or the old post in the Graphics forum....and then click on this link and tell me what you think?

The art is about halfway down on the right side. I'm sure it's harmless but it caught me off guard for sure. It's easy to see where the name and inspiration came from.

Interesting but I think coincidence...

Unless I'm missing something, I doubt you're the first person to draw a circle in a square with rounded corners.

Its not a coincedence.

You game is called "Balls or Spheres"

He has done a picture of three Balls and called it "Three Balls"

A coincedence would be if your game and his picture were about cubes yet were both called Ball

If I have a picture of a sunset, and call it sunset, and someone else has a game about bringing about night, and calls it sunset, that is not a coincedence

I believe the Amiga game Logical! had buttons much like these... I'd wager it's a coincidence too.

It's not just orbs and rounded squares. Look at his picture AND consider the name. (Orbicus Triplicus)

I don't really care...it's just very interesting.

H&K...can you say that again? =p

Orbicus Triplicus means three balls
Your Game is called Balls

You would expect therefore that they both would have balls in them, which they do. This is not a coincdence. A coincedence would be if neither had balls in it, and instead both had cars.

Ok then the issue is not if it's a coincidence. Do you think he saw my screenshot before he made his art and named it?

Well since he posted his picture in February 2006, I'd say the odds that he saw your screenshot before he made his art and named it are spectacularly low.

Do you think he saw my screenshot before he made his art and named it?
no

The date posted was 9.2.2006. ie. September 2, 2006...

You didn't follow the link I gave, did you?

Your American arnt you Chroma. 9.2.2006 is 9 Feb 2006

In fact, I don't even know where the confusion arises. On both my link and on DeviantArt, it spells out the date.

"Submitted: Feb 9, 2006"

lol. If you just point at it in deviantArt tho it says 2.9.2006

Oh ok. Well at least he posted here before he overreacted. Probably just as well in hindsight.

LOL thanks for clearing that up for me Gabriel. I feel like I owe you an investigators fee. You did a great job man!

It's STILL an interesting coincidence. I never laid eyes on that picture before I named my game or designed my tiles and playing pieces.

H&K... where are you getting your definition for coincidence from? The fact that they both chose the same language (Latin, I'm guessing) to name their creations, which look similar, sure seems like a coincidence to me.

So... now YOU have copied his design? :)

Seriously, coincidence s probably what happened... and although it can be hard to accept most ideas have been done or invented already even if you think you have something "new". And the second you post something on the net someone CAN see it, even if he's not regular visitor here. I have often come across Blitz forum links while searching something with google.

@Torrente

a striking occurrence of two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance

Notice the word Striking, I dont think that having a game about spheres called "Spheres" and then in the whole wide wed finding a picture called three spheres, and it being three spheres is a striking occurrence.

If the game was about elephants, and the picture was three elephants, yet they were called Orbicus and Orbicus Triplicus. Then that would be a coincidence.

And no, I dont think the fact that they are in latin is striking enough. (If it turns out that fatj is chromas long lost Brother, then that would be a coincidence)

a striking occurrence of two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance

Personally, I read it as Chroma thinking that it was not 'by mere chance' - and thus not a coincidence. Most others seem inclined to disagree based on the fairly general nature of the designs and/or Latin terminology; that it was 'by mere chance' and thus coincidental.

For me, the term 'striking' is less of a keyword in that definition than 'by mere chance'.

less of a keyword in that definition than 'by mere chance'
Thats the point though isnt it. Its not mere chance that they are about "spheres" and then are called "spheres", thats the nature of worlds.
Chance would be, as I said, if they were both about the same something other than spheres, yet were called spheres.

When you do "I feel lucky" on google, and it does find the page you are looking for, it isnt coincidence.

So I say again. Two things about the same thing, decriptivly called the name of that thing, IS not coincidence. It is the nature of nameing.

a striking occurrence of two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance
That's not how Webster defines it.

Since the original concern was resolved, I'll continue:

H&K:

We seem to be arguing slightly different semantics. I'm arguing between two similar/same events happening independently, versus there being some sort of causal link between the two. You seem to be arguing that it's not a coincidence not because there's any link between the two, but because it's potentially so common that the two would exist that it's somehow less than coincidental - that it's just "The Way Things Are" or something.

I assert that the latter point of view would be that of the minority of English speakers. I won't say "wrong", but certainly not what people expect when one speaks of "coincidence".

For the record Webster defines 'coincidence' as:
the occurrence of events that happen at the same time by accident but seem to have some connection
(for those wondering). I find this defintion consistent with my point of view, and experience of others' points of view.

..I really like chicken curry..

You can't really say the game is called spheres and his is called 3 spheres. Because...the word Orbicus doesn't even exist. I made it up as he did. It's not in the dictionary. Even more odd!

yes it does it's latin for spherical.

@Lines

If I drew a Picture of three Elephants, and posted in on the web, and called it three Elephants.
Then 5 Mths later someone else started to make a game about elephants, and called it elephants.
That would not be a coincidence
but seem to have some connection
They dont seem to have any connection, because they are being named after the thing they are.

I made it up as he did
As Grey said. Plus Refering to me previous answer.
And no, I dont think the fact that they are in latin is striking enough. (If it turns out that fatj is chromas long lost Brother, then that would be a coincidence)
Now, Is it a coincidence that Orbicus was made up by both chrome and The romans to mean Balls? (If you think yes that also is a coincidence, then we are never going to agree on what a coincidence is)

If I drew a Picture of three Elephants, and posted in on the web, and called it three Elephants.
Then 5 Mths later someone else started to make a game about elephants, and called it elephants.
That would not be a coincidencep
Perhaps not but if you also both decided to use the Latin word for elephant, it would be a bit more of a coincedence already! :)

edit: maybe the Latin word *is* elephant which would make this example less spectacular, but still!

No it seems to be elephantus, phew..

Perhaps not but if you also both decided to use the Latin word for elephant, it would be a bit more of a coincedence already!
Not realy, because whatever language the maker of the Game about elelphants chose to use to name the game, there would be a picture of Elephants on the net called Elephants in that Language. Unless they chose a spectacularly rare language, Then I might accept some level of coincdence. And unfortunatly I dont concider the root lanuage of modern Western Continental European langages to be that rare.

Nope, this isn't getting anywhere, so I'll leave it at that.

But that's okay. :o)

;)

yes it does it's latin for spherical.

I smell Google!

nah you smell a proper public school education with beatings, no girls and gay head masters. Uh actually it was google.

I smell Google

What? Jake and Tony, I am very disapointed in you both.
Mind you. I did go to a RC Church school.

Lots of others using 'orbicus' on google.

It is hard to make up unique words these days!

Yeah I saw that Ziltch. Don't know what to make of it though.
