A little problem with photoshop

I cant seem to get it to work right anymore.

I want to fill a selected area with the color black, but it fills the area with a gradien from black to transparent.

I create a new image and selects it all. Then I set a border of 5 px on the selection and invert it twice. Now I have a 5 px thick selection all around my image. It is this selection I try to fill with solid black.

If I fill all of yhe image (without selections) it fills it with solid black.

I don't know how to fix it so it will be a solid black filling.

Anyone know what could be my problem?

It isn't a gradient. The border function adds a feathered edge which makes it look like a gradient on small areas.

Select All, then Contract by 5 pixels. That way might work better. You can also try colouring the selection manually with a brush/pencil tool, unless you're prepared to start messing with fill tolerance settings.

Your problem is... You are using Photoshop. JASC Paint Shop Pro! The only way to go (unless you go COREL!)

I did hear that JASC and COREL merged... can't wait to see what comes of it then!

Corel took over Jasc years ago. Even before PSP9.

If you go to Edit->Preferences->General you see an option 'interpolation'. If you set it to 'nearest neighbour' it will prevent Photoshop from smoothing stuff out.

An other way that may work is:

After selecting the selection tool first set "Antialiasing" to off, THEN select the area. Also, of course, set "feather" to zero.

Odd. You should have Border, Smooth, Expand and Contract (I think - don't have Photoshop on this PC to check)

If I dont select all the image I do have those options!
A smaller square ket ne chose contract etc.

Are you working with a background layer by any chance? Try Layer>New>From Background* to convert to a normal layer, then try that.

* Again, no photoshop on here so I'm saying all this from memory.

Look around you... can you form some sort of rudimentary lathe???

If you manually select the whole image rather than Select>All, do you still get the same problem?

I've used Photoshop for years and never noticed this.

I don't know if there's a simpler solution:

before you chose to fill the selection black, hit ctrl-c thn ctrl-v to create a new layer. now choose the magic wand selection rod thingie. set antialias off and tolerance to zero. then click on the transparent part of the new layer, then inverse this selection, finally go to the first layer and fill this selection black.

jfk: You soluttion does not work with a tranparent background, but a white background does it.

I just has to remember not to use transparent background.
