There needs to be a "no fanboy postings" rule here

I'm very opinionated, and often my views can rub people up the wrong way, but I am open minded enough to consider other people's points of view and be receptive to sensible, persuasive arguments that contradict my own opinions. What I absolutely hate are "fanboy posts" - blinkered, obsessive, immature and geeky (in all the worst ways) rants about one thing or another.

I think it would be a good idea for all such behaviour to be discouraged and for any fanboy topics to be locked. Surely I'm not the only one here who finds fanboy behaviour extremely annoying?

We also need to ban the people who don't have the common sense enough to skip over a topic that they don't want to read. While we're at it, let's start a personalized banning service for anyone who desires to have ideas they can't argue with removed to help improve their overall self-esteem. Furthermore, let's play favorites with posters by locking/removing the posts of other registered Blitz users they don't personally like. Let's base it on how many publicly purchasable games they've made while we're at it.

We also need to ban cheese. It constipates people, and all of those nasty little parasites that live in it are just too disgusting to fathom. Oh lord! If I hear cheese one more time, I may have to ... well... I don't even want to say it.

Since I'm unable to detect sarcasm I'll take your post at face value. You make some interesting points, but in my opinion:

1) It's difficult to know if you're interested in a discussion topic until you read it - don't judge a book by its cover and all that.

2) Banning people for subjective reasons is discriminatory, in my opinion, and might hurt people's feelings. It's better to try to separate facts from emotional responses, because failing to do so leads to extremisms, fanboyisms and other, um, "isms" that are not too good.

3) I don't think that it's ever good to remove threads for anything other than culturally/racially/socially/sexually (etc) offensive reasons. I have no problems with discussions that are going nowhere being locked and preserved though.

4) Basing one's right to post based on how many completed, commercially available games they've helped developed is unwise. 90% of new Blitz users wouldn't be able to contribute. It wouldn't be a problem for me since I've been involved in the development of plenty of commercially available games, but it'd make the forums fairly lifeless.

This thread is starting to take the course of threads that led to the removal of Off Topic in the first place.

There is no clear winner in these disputes. Many people will be against 'fan-boy' topics - many will not. It ends up in a dispute between two parties or factions.

Best to let it drop now.

Very interesting. A old Blitz poster and registered user has pointed out to me that use of the term "fanboy" used to be a post-deletable offense, and with it's continued use the result would be a ban. Is this still the case? If so, when will this entire silly thread be removed?

Why bother participating in a thread and deliberately causing trouble, then demand the thread is locked when people start pounding you into the floor???

As far as disputes go, that would imply that I get angry with people online, which I never do. You can be sure that I am tactless enough to make it very clear when I dislike someone. :p

I honestly think that fanboys are impossible to debate with in regards to their obsessions, which makes participatory discussion threads about them rather redundant. It's a shame that we can't discuss the fanboy phenomenon sensibly.

2. Go back to school and get some social skills.

Let them be. If people want to be fanboys that's up to them and your dislike of it is your own issue to deal with. They are not any less worthy of being the way they are regardless of whether you think it ranks high or low on the scale of reasonableness, sanity or social etiquette.

For example: Can you spot someone in this thread who is always right, won't listen to other opinions, and automatically regards anyone opposing their views to be flat wrong and worthy of insults? There you go.

All we need now is guess the engine threads, and we will have serious deja vu.

Here's a quite literally insane idea, how about doing some programming? Practicing in the art of procrastination does you no favours.

Why doesn't everyone chill out, we don't want mega strict off-topic again. Try practicing Buddhist-like mental states when you see a thread that doesn't particularly appeal to you. We've had people saying ban "Grey Alien" threads, ban "fanboy" threads, ban "When is Max3D ready" threads and many more. How about some tolerance round here for a change? Or should I be tolerating intolerance?

I don't read the fanboy stuff unless it's about a console/game I'm interested in, the various engine or Max3D threads aren't my scene as I'm well into BMax and not about to change or I'll never get anything finished. In fact lots of threads don't appeal, but one or two do and that's great cos it's like finding little gems. I particularly like inane Utube videos or comic strips like sswift used to post all the time.
