Shaders For Games Demo - Please Test ( SM2.0 )
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Shaders For Games Demo - Please Test ( SM2.0 )
Ok, when I posted about the website, a few people said I needed videos. Good point, but videos only tell you so much and they're kinda low quality even if they're quite large in filesize. So I had a little time this afternoon and threw together this little demo with the help of a friend.
It's strictly Shader Model 2.0 only. I could probably do it in SM1.4 but there's very little point since the more advanced shaders are going to be 2.0 anyway. If you haven't got a videocard capable of running it then please don't waste your time, it surely won't work.
It's a pretty simple shader, just a normal map with specular and one light. One of the simplest shaders in my packs, but I think it's a good obvious one to show off. Need to add artist credits before it goes final, but I wanted to post it here to make sure it works for everyone first.
A screenshot of it in action

Download here :

Now a second demo, from Pack1 is online too.

I'm amazed that it works on my crappy laptop intel card.
I guess it must have shader 2.0
very nice btw.. I'm a sucker for shiny things. :)
Cool. Thanks for testing. I think the new Intel Extreme chipsets have Shader Model 2.0, if that's what you've got. If not, I'm even more amazed than you are, lol.
it's only a GMA 900/GML card!
It works and looks nice on my Radeon 9600. I didn't see the purple light that is visible in the screenshot but I assume this is not in the demo.
Cicero: Ok, not familiar with that. Guess it works on lower spec hardware than I thought.
Foppy: Great, thanks for testing. You're right, the purple light was one of four I used in that demo, but I decided to only use one in the final demo to make it a bit more compatible. Purple didn't look so good when it was the only light in the scene, so I stuck with white.
..working fine here..but I dont like those shine look over solider clothes..its just not real..and no purple light here too..
nVidia 5600fx here
Thanks for testing. As the text written across the screen explains, that's to show off the effect. not because it HAS to be that way. A specular map could be used to define which areas of the object should be shiny. The shine color, power and glossiness can also be affected. For demo purposes, big-ass shiny seemed to be the order of the day.
And as I just explained above, there is not supposed to be a purple light.
hmm rmb <save target as> on mine just wants to save a HTML file. Guess its a IE7 thing.
Yeah mine too - IE7 :(
IPete2.
happened to me to... I just placed a .rar on the end when I went to save the link :p
Doesn't work on my gfx card, no shader, so I just get a plain white model.
Top job.
Works fine on a x850xt-pe!
Had problems downloading - but JA2's suggestion of adding .rar worked.
Very smooth and fast here - and very shiny!
I do wish people would use the standard PC ZIP format - now I have to go get a rar tool I dont really want...
[edit]
Looks really nice though!
IPete2.
Fine here.. nVidia Geforce 7300 GS!
Dabz
works fine (GeForce 6600GT)
works here, a bit too glossy on the skin in places tho.
Geforce go 7800 gs
Ok, I've redone the demo and uploaded a new version. This one uses the specular map that the artist provided instead of a flat specular map I was creating to just make the shader look good. The glossiness has been turned down too. The overall effect is still a bit OTT to show off the shader but hopefully the overall effect is better.
If you haven't downloaded before, please download both and tell me which you prefer.
If you have downloaded before, please just download this one :
www.shadersforgames.com/demos/nmapdemo2.rar ( right click, save as because I don't have the site set up for rar mimetypes. Change the filetype to rar if using IE7. )
And tell me if it's better with the artist's specular map and a lower glossiness.
Thanks for all the testing so far. I've added the note about downloading in IE7 for those having problems. Sorry, I don't use it myself so I wasn't aware of the problem.
working fine here except there is some triangles flickering on face of the solider..just face not back side of the head..shine on clothes is lower now but still noticable and making cloth looking plastic..anyway, working fine except those triangles flickering I did mention just now...
nVidia 5600FX
I don't think your card is SM2.0 compliant so I'm pleased ( and surprised ) it runs at all. Disappointed about the flickering triangles but I've looked carefully and don't get those here. Not much I can do, I don't think. Not with my primitive knowledge of the software anyway.
Thanks for testing again.
It seems that you using Deep creator..can you share some comments regarding this system please??
Yes, I did use Deep Creator. I don't own it ( yet ) but a friend has a commerical license and helped me put the demo together. I only had a chance to play with it briefly, but I found it to be a wonderful tool. It's similar to product like Unity, where you can get by without any code at all, but then you can either script it or write code ( Lisp / C / C++ ) if you want to. It's very powerful graphically, with stencil shadows, built-in lightmapping, a host of advanced shader built into the engine ( though not many which do the same as my packs, so there's another market ;) ) and it's ridiculously easy to pick up and learn too.
It's expensive though. $2,000 for the commercial license, I believe.
it works...
I've added a second demo now. This one shows off three different shaders from Pack 1, a metal shader, a different normal map shader and a nice little animated water shader.
Same requirements as before, SM2.0 ( but might really not work on less, where the last one seems to have pretty much worked on less. )
Hopefully it works ok. All the testing is much appreciated because I want to get these packs released early in the New Year, and now's a good time to get the demos and pictures and all that sort of thing done so that I can begin promotion.
..working fine here on nVidia 5600FX...hey, Gabe..commercial license you mentioned is for one product or you can build/sell unlimited numbers of products??
Cool! working fine on Radeon9600(128Mb)
Both demos run very smoothly and fast without any glitches.
Being picky the text is a little untidy - for example look at the word 'model' on your top screenshot - that O has an odd shape.
Thanks guys.
I'm told the commercial license lets you build/sell an unlimited number of products.
Yes, the text is a bit untidy, but I've fiddled with the settings and couldn't get it looking any better than that.
