Word alternative?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Word alternative?
Is there a free Microsoft Word alternative that anyone knows about? I remember seeing one mentioned here but cannot remember its name. Any help would be great.
Many thanks,
Jason.

Thanks, I`ll check it out.
Jason.
OpenOffice is great - but a bit dodgy if you require saving word .doc's as they might not be 100% compatible.
If thats no issue, you just saved yourself ~$150 on MS Office 2003.
Open Office 2.0 has saved my heinie multiple times... The .doc export feature is slightly wonky but works... I use RTF and OO format and export PDF docs with ease!!! Calc is humming fine! and BASE has me happy.
Open Office is great but I find it a bit slow and unresponsive. It's as if it's written in Java or something bloaty like that.
Enay, are you sure you've got the right version?
I recall there's a sideproject regarding OpenOffice wrapped in Java functions, to get it platform independent.
Or perhaps you were using an old beta version or something..
OO have been very responsive on the copmuters I've had it installed on..
The only thing I dislike, is the long startup time for OO to boot..
Open Office is nice enough but it lacks basic features - such as a Grammar Checker.
You guys should try out MS Office 2007. Nothing comes even close to the capabilities of it. But, it does cost some. So if you can't afford it then the next best thing is Open Office.
Don't forget Microsoft Works, also. It's a cheap way to get similar power like Office 2007.
