unity xmas rebate
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/unity xmas rebate
Hi,
maybe this is interesting for some of you. Otee is giving a 20% xmas rebate on unity (pro and indy) until 15 januar 2007, code is UNITYXMAS06.
http://unity3d.com/Regards,
taumel
This looks exciting.
Anyone know if it is any good?
Does this thing just make browser games?
It's a good tool and it can publish on- and offline for win and osx. Downside for windows users is that the ide is osx only.
I found it a bit sluggish.
It's nice, but there's still too much money involved for me. The price for the engine itself is much more than the likes of Torque and TrueVision which seem to offer about the same and a little more in terms of performance and power, respectively. However, it has some workflow benefits which might offset that. But they want upgrades every version number, and from what I've read, it's probably going to be 2.0 or higher before the engine is really usable for a complete game. Plus they want $150 per incident for support?
I don't know. Perhaps it's really worth it, but it's too much of a gamble without knowing just how many "incidents" I may end up needing and how many more paid version number upgrades are going to go by before it does everything I need.
That 'C4' thing might be better.
In my opinion you can make nice games since 1.5.1 is out. Bugfix release for 1.6 will be out in the near future. V2 will come with great new features but as i already said before you don't need it for making a nice game.
Secondly if you're after online publishing then there are only two other solutions like sw3d in director and virtools. Both have their up's and down's compared to unity. It depends on what you need for a project. In my opinion unity is a good tool and it will only get better. History has shown that they update the tool approximately on a three months basis so there is noticeable progress where you don't have to wait years before something comes out.
As for the feedback this is a pro feedback like's is described somewhere on their site. But honestly i don't know if you need that as you get nice feedback on the site almost on a daily basis (most of the time even faster).
I've been a long time fan of Blitz... but years of delays with Max3D have finally forced me to go looking for another engine.
What I've seen of Unity has impressed so much that I'm taking the plunge and buying a Mac Book Pro just so I can use it. Unity's features are amazing!
Mark seems to be wanting to take Blitz in the same direction by creating an integrated game creation tool, but I can't wait any longer.
Wow you dug out a really old thread! :O)
Yes it's really sad that max3D is taking sooo long but well i'm still curious what it will look like in the end and i'm confident that it will be a good thing!
Beside of that Unity is a really good gamedev tool, with it's own pros and cons. Compared to the rest of the tools which are around at the moment it's overall the best you can get in my opinion. If you don't know already, you can take a look at their feature site for v2 at
http://unity3d.com/whatsnew-2.0.html which is about to be released this summer. And just as i got this asked more than once: If you've bought the current version after 15.5.2007 you'll get v2 for free.
Yep, it's the first thread I hit regarding Unity so I thought I'd resurrect it. :)
Thanks for the link to the V2 what's new... I wish they'd elaborate on what some of 40+ other new features it's going to have are. Do you know if they've nailed full network support in V2?
Haven't bought Unity yet, still waiting for my Mac to arrive :( ... also planning on getting Cheetah3D for modelling. Do you know if Cheetah's any good?
PS: I really like that transparent cube unity demo you made... looks awesome!
They provide some information on network support on the v2 link i gave you. Regarding the other features i can't talk but there are some further nice things included.
I've only tried out Cheetah once so i can't say a lot about it but other people who work with it, really do like it, so it seems to be a good software. The man who is behind the software also is dedicated about it so it doesn't seem to look like a deadend thing. Personally i do use Modo as i wanted to be free of this OSX/WIN only issues as you get both versions (but it's also more expensive than cheetah).
Thanks, i'm glad that you liked one of my tryouts. :O)
I hope i'll find some time to make something new in the future. They had a little explosion competition were people contributed. Maybe you haven't seen those?

C4 is sluggish (especially the editor).
I've expressed my views on Unity before, so I wont repeat it - expect to say, my refund hasn't arrived yet...
I wonder what you use instead now...
At the moment nothing, 'cos until today I haven't had a good idea.
But now I have, I'll probably use BlitzMax...
So 2D?
Yes - only really works in 2D anyway.
Then good luck, although i like doing 2D in 3D when it comes down to useable 2.5D then...
@taumel
Doh! I don't know how I missed the networking part on the V2 features page.
I had a quick squiz at modo and it looks like its got some nice modelling and texturing features. Is it easy to import the models it creats into Unity?
Modo doesn't appear to have any animation features... so what, if anything, do you use to animate your models?
Thanks for the link to the explosions... very cool.
Yes, its easy to import stuff, although the current version wont accept .X files - whether its changed in the new one, I dont know.
Then good luck, although i like doing 2D in 3D when it comes down to useable 2.5D then...
Thanks! So far all my projects have been abandoned, so, maybe, this one could be different...
@Akira
Nope, Modo isn't ready for animations yet. Only Renderanis can be done with 301 (
http://www.luxology.com/whatismodo/301/ ). But luckily so far i'm not in the need for so much anis at the moment (and if, i take my old 3dsmax licence or if they need to be good others do it :O). Modo amongst others can export FBX or OBJ files and these work in Unity.
Maybe you should just tryout the trial of Cheetah. It's a lot cheaper and maybe more focused on an usage with Unity. Modo on the other side is much more powerful on all the modelling, sculpting, texture painting, physical rendering, user interface and so on sides. But until you don't need these things it might just be more expensive for you.
I just like Modo because it's a crossplatform solution and they don't rip you for this. Could be a great app if you see it from a long term perspective. And Cheetah i guess will also only get better and it seems to suit very well for the small pocket. The downside for me is that it's OSX only.
Thanks for the advice Taumel.
I've never done any 3D modelling before so it sounds like Modo would be good for the novice looking for a easy to use solution, but as you said Cheetah seems to be targeted at Unity, and it supports almost all features usable by Unity, including animation, which is key for making games.
I think I'll start with Cheetah, and if it's too difficult upgrade to Modo and import the models back into Cheetah or some other tool to animate them.
No problem, hope you'll enjoy it!
