What's this 'C4' engine thing?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/What's this 'C4' engine thing?
I was reading PC Format (UK) - they were spouting on about 'C4' exploding onto the indie games scene.
They blabbed on about it - I'm not typing it all up.
http://www.terathon.com/index.phpI suggest someone takes a look and reports back.
I tried it some times ago, but it seems quite heavy, and if I remember, it uses an open source engine no more updated.
Oh, its update alright - just as much as BlitzMax is...
Tried the OS X demo - unfortunately it crashed...
Its also expensive - I'm sure the price went up over the past year from $100 to $200
The demo is still very slow, nearly unusable for indie scene, DarkGDK seems to be better at least...
..feature rich, slow and no physics
Its not really slow if you have the latest hardware - which you do need (and states as much on the demo download screen) - however, you can adjust the detail in the demo game as well.
Its certainly feature rich, and has pretty impressive graphics - much more so that DBPro/GSDK
There are a few features missing from it, and it can only be used with C++
I got the demo working - for some reason it doesn't like my Belkin Optical Mouse - remove that and all is fine.
Its only slightly more than BlitzMax too (when converted from dollars to pounds, that is)
Forum support is extremely quick - I was discussing the crashing problem with the designer last night, hence how we discovered the mouse was the problem.

Did you accidentally buy BlitzMax twice or something? I paid £40 for BlitzMax and that's going for a little over £100.
It was £50.48 for me.
Personally I tend to use a lib that more acceptable by most users, I don't have time to make super 3D games, so C4 is not on my list yet......
If you are looking for a good (and easy!) 3D game environment, with physic, good collistion detection, DX9, etc... I suggest you Beyond Virtual (http://www.beyondvirtual.com).
It is based on Angel Script.
I bought it some times ago!
..I didnt try it so I cant say (Beyond Virtual), but I heard few folks here saying that its pure crap...I'm not sure is that truth too, but I guess they have some reasons behind statements they made..
.
That just looks like Unity - no real coding involved :(
Alessandro
Is B.V stable ?
I heard it is still buggy ?
@Alessandro: It is said that when more objects are added, the fps drops quickly. Also, the demo only shows models with texture. How many objects have you added on screen so far? How about fps?
Thanks in advance

I think I was one of those folks. The silver version or whatever it was called was truly awful. It may have improved, of course.
I wasn't that impressed with C4 myself. A few simple shaders, animated dynamic shadows etc are dead easy to do in any current gen engine worth its salt. And the FPS aspect felt very basic, if you took away the graphics which were't rendered all that quickly, you ended up with something that could be coded within 20 minutes using B3D.
