My vote goes to System Shock 2
(And I mean cos they are scary, not cos hes only a dog)
(Or not real)
/me wants a scooby snack
interesting thread name...but yeah that game was good.
So like Resident Evil, the whole lot.
Never really played a game I thought was scary. However, the haunted house in Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines was brilliantly done and came as close as anything I can think of.
the haunted house in Vampire the Masquerade:
The Hotel. Or the Doctors house?
That GameCube game was a bit spooky. Bugger, cant remember name. :/ The one where you start walking on the ceiling, and stuff...
Good game.
.
The spider lair sections in Dark Messiah are quite creepy.
The Hotel. Or the Doctors house?
The hotel, I think. It catches fire half way through and a lot of stuff gets thrown around, lots of spooky voices and ghostly visages. Quite cleverly done, I thought.
That big spider in code Veronica was a bit unsettling, too...
Yep, thats the Hotel. When you find all the newspapers with the story, and the "Shaking" things is scary. Not as scary as the first time a ghost walks though you in ss2 like.
Silent hill 1-4.
The dark sections in Doom or Doom 2 were a bit scary, I cheated sometimes by adjusting the gamma setting.
Of course I mean scary for Scooby Doo, not for me, I am never scared. ;) Yeah he was sitting next to me and asked me to adjust the gamma setting or he would go home.
TheDuck should read this thread.
I always made it a point to play Doom 3 alone, in the middle of the night, with headphones on and all of the lights out.
I started to get freaked out on many occasions.
Swat 3. I'm not joking either. Every time you play a map the enemy positions are randomised and they're sneaky as hell. No other game has made me jump and hit stuff more than Swat 3.

Eternal Darkness?
SculptureOfSoul: Do you remember the part in Doom3 where you go down a coridor and you find a room with a glowing pentagram, and you hear the demonic laugh? That scared the crud out of me when I first saw it. Had all the lights out and speakers cranked.
Yeah, that was definitely one of the scarier moments! I never even got all that far in the game, but that moment, along with the bathroom mirror moment, and the corridor where you hear a mother talking about her child and then the freakish baby sounds (it went something liek that, man it's been a while and my memory sucks :) were some of the scariest moments of gaming I've enjoyed.
I should really start over and play it all the way through.

Heretic/Hexen (and both sequals). Not mega scarey but maybe scarey for scooby
The beginning of the human campaign in Alien Vs. Predator 2 was pretty awesome.
Too bad they didn't stick with it for the rest of the game (the other two campaigns sucked, and the end of the human campaign was just boring).
Doom still scares me sometimes :)
I forgot just how cool the human campaign in AVP 2 was. Ah yes, that was fun.
Another game that creeped me out was Shadowgate on the original NES. Of course, I was like 6 or 7 at the time I was playing it.
I remember running into a woman wearing an elegant bridal gown, her back towards you. Once you get next to her (by moving forward a step) she turned around to reveal a huge skeletal face. I think I shrieked.
Maybe the catacombs on thief with the zombies in would have scared scooby?
Actually I downloaded the Fear expansion demo the other day and there's a short section there that gave me the willies.
You enter a series of rooms in that are in disarray, junk everywhere, scary music and there's these semi-transparent things (with glowing red eyes) that come at you from the darkness, punch you, deal heavy damage and then scamper off before you know what's happening. Your bullets don't hurt them - you have to punch them back to kill them. Don't know why, but it really gives me a fright.
Scooby Doo Unmasked? XD
Eternal Darkness?
Aye, that's the one. Really enjoyed that game. :)
AvP as a human was indeed scary. Like being in the movie aliens for real.
And system shock 2.... wow. That game is great and very scary. EA or some company should really remix ss2 using a new engine and revamped artwork. I can only imagine what it would be like with todays graphics capabilities. Bioshock looks great, but I want my ss2( or 3 for that matter )!
you people get scared too easy. That stuff isn't real. However. The hotel in Masquerade even got to me... absolutely fantastic level design there.
all these silent hill and resident evil things don't scare me... they only have a 'boo' effect when things pop out.. that isn't scarry.
I need something more realistic to scare me... Arachnaphobia is a pretty good example... tho.. I was like 9 when I saw it so it might not be as bad today.
things with aliens sometimes get me.. cause at least it is in the range of possible. Rather than impossible... and things with real people.. serial killers.. that kind stuff.... not undead super-human freaks like Jason... but things like buffalo bill in silence of the lambs. Tho I don't think of that movie as scarey.
.
Actually, that one zombie level from Half Life 2 was kinda creepy....
A lot of the scare factor comes from setting up the right environment to get scared in. Doom 3 for instance, isn't scary if you play it in the middle of the day with the volume low while your family is there. Playing it in the middle of the night when you're all alone in your house and with the sound cranked, however, can be quite disconcerting.
Realms of the haunting
The undying
Thief 3 (old ship section)
What sculpture said.
Plus system shock 2 starts off in a great way where everything is deserted, and your just wandering around for awhile.
And then all of a sudden this zombie/cyborg thing comes running at you out of no where, and the game really starts. Ss2 has great audio too.
I got really unnerved playing System Shock 2 when it first came out. It's the sound more than anything - I had to turn the EAX effects off to play it - too spooky with them on. I'm currently playing through it again on my new laptop - thankfully it doesn't support EAX :-)
Only other thing I ever found scary was the Cradle level in Thief 3 - the first time one of the "inmates" jittered across the screen I just saved the game and switched it off for the night - spooky as hell that level!
doom 3 isn't scarey because it is about demons from hell and zombies... it is like being scared by dwarves, orcs, and gnomes... It is fiction. I can't be scared by pure fabrication.. it doesn't work like that for me.... Things jumping out at me make me tense or jump... but that isn't fear... it is just uncomfortable and tiresome.
It all depends on your ability to empathize with the character -- to immerse yourself in their shoes. I thought Doom 3 did a good job of creating a believably coherent atmosphere; not necessarily believable in the "yeah, that really exists" sense of the word, but believable in the "If this scenario did occur, this is how I'd imagine it would play out" sense.
Hello.
Larn.
Goodbye.

You already said that! Oh wait it was in another thread.

OK, scary probably isn't the right word - I haven't even seen a horror film in a long time that's actually 'scared' me. 'Unsettling' is probably a better word.
The thing I liked about Eternal Darkness is that it didn't just go for the cheap 'boo' effect: as you're exposure to monsters etc. increased, you'd start to lose your sanity, which resulted in some very odd things start to happen. Some quite subtle, that would have you start questioning you're own, real sanity. :)
I thought it was a great, novel idea for a game.

Isn't the one GameCube game? I heard some really weird things about that one..!

Yeah, GameCube game. Quite an oldie now. Not sure if it came out on any other playform, or if they did a sequel...
