Why no member list?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Why no member list?

lots of you maybee thought about making this board phpBB. but then the 'product' page wouldn't fit in anymore. so i think this board is the best solution at all.
well, i quite dont know why there is no memberlist!?
i really would apprecheate such memberlist :)
anyone with me?

(just a suggestion)

A member list would be great - it would also be sad as you will then spot just how many names around here are gone.

I'd like a memberlist to actually find people quicker and cry at just the memories of the fun that we will never have again.

Sniff.

Here area a few that posted on a pretty regular basis, then vanished:

"rsbrowndog" - http://www.blitzbasic.com/Account/showuser.php?id=982
"Richard Betson" - http://www.blitzbasic.com/Account/showuser.php?id=19
"Rob Hutchinson" - http://www.blitzbasic.com/Account/showuser.php?id=20
"Rob Pearmain" - http://www.blitzbasic.com/Account/showuser.php?id=24
"Skully" - http://www.blitzbasic.com/Account/showuser.php?id=33

A an example there - "Skully" made 1,753 posts. However, they are all gone - probably due to the forum culling. Even stuff in the programming forums got culled a while ago so it is all gone.

Another thing to note is some of these dissappeared a year ago (that's a Blitz forum version of a year ago).

Now look at the sticky's at the top of 'General Discussion'.

I will always wonder how many people left due to the restrictions on posting in Off Topic. People (other than these) clearly did leave around that time.

I'm still here.. :D

i dont know why there aint no moderators replying to this topic...
tell me, are you to lazy, or doesnt it make any sense to you?

Or maybe most of the moderators (or at least those with the greatest ability to implement or not implement a 'member list' on these custom-made forums) were in a timezone such that it was 11pm when you originally posted and have since been sleeping, what with it now being approximately 4am Sunday morning.

Or perhaps it's possible there is no Universe beyond what Mr "Devils Child" can see?

Having said that, it wasn't the lack of Off Topic as such, that killed off so many - it was the clamp-down on the fact that you could not post an announcement that it was your birthday, etc or you were celebrating something like a having a baby or got married, etc.

The 'community' type posting was killed along with Off Topic stuff. I remember quite a few noses being pushed out of joint with community announcement type threads being deleted.

I spose you could just crawl the site to get a member list as all members are numbered? I spose this might be bad practise though and might get you kicked out. . . Does BRL have a policy on this?

People come and go, and those you mentioned just went along when they used to grow older. Jobs, family etc. chanched their lives. But they still come back from time to time, dropping a livesign.

I'm sure I remember seeing a member list on this site, around a couple of years ago. Maybe it was removed, or I'm imagining things. *shrugs*

yes there was a "wild life" member list, collected by one user, mostly without mail adresses. I think it was in blitz3D/tutorials.

I remember someone collated Blitz websites into a list to each member - but it wasn't an actual member list.

Big10P is quite correct, there used to be a members list before the site was redone in PHP (2002/3ish?). I can't say I've ever missed it though and I guess it wasn't re-implemented due to little use?

It was removed a long time ago after a few people "harvested" e-mail addresses and other data and spammed a lot of garbage. I think BRL probably decided it was safer not to have a generated one and it didn't really serve a vital purpose.

As for the communinity being killed off: They had a very vibrant community but with many diverse interests now they have a much smaller but tightly focused and enforced set of discussions now. I can only assume that's what BRL wanted and while we might disagree with their viewpoint it is their site.

I think a lot of people have moved on from Blitz and as the site no longer tollerates talking about other interests have moved on altogether. I think a lot of people, (like me) probably check back every now and then, dropping in the occasional post or certainly reading a few before moving on again.

I'm probably the lone voice of dissent, but in some ways it's nice not to have a true off-topic area because that's one more area that I'd spend too much time in instead of working on my game. ;)
