Bit-Torrent is the shiz!

I never really bothered about bit-torrent since I last used it ages ago and got really bad speeds and whatnot. Speeds of like 4kb/sec was good back then too!

Anyways, with my updated knowledge and a somewhat faster internet connection, forwarding the correct ports on my router I'm now enjoying torrent at a whole new level.

Just now I'm getting 305kb/sec. Thats a &*%#-load better than 300 bytes a second I used to get :)

My netgear router doesn't like me. No matter what ports I forward, it won't let anything "fun" through. :/

deps, make sure you open both TCP and UDP ports..

Had a conversation about this on IRC a couple of days ago. I'm not forwarding any ports and usually get 200-300kb/s.

Might mess with port forwarding one day and see if it goes any faster, not that its slow anyway.

I've found that tweaking too much can make things worse. Mine works, I'm happy, I'm leaving it alone. Heh.

Out of curiosity which ISP are you guys using? I'm with PlusNet which up until the last few months has been fine. All torrent files come down @ 1.5kbps tops even with an 8mb connection. They say they are trying to fix but I've kinda had enough now as this is one of my primary uses.

Out of curiosity, have anyone ever got speeds over 800-900kb/sec? Now i have a 4-something mbit connection, so it happily wrooms along,but it never went faster than that on my old one.

Max I get over BT is 100kb/s as that's as much data my wireless net can send with its current signal (net speed caps @ 2Mb, but is running @ 1Mb), just takes awhile for the damned thing to build up seeders.

Love it when game companies link up a BT tracker as a download alternative, all those damned ad-infested sites that have you wait in line for a 50kb/s download on a 1gb demo with no means of resume (because said sites dont allow download managers) incase of corruption/disconnection is atrocious.
(most companies too cheap to host their files using their own bandwidth these days?)

Lots of cool stuff on bit torrent, that's not illegal. i don't see downloading TV show's illegal. I got cable and their on it. It probably is though but :oP

i get around 1.2 mb/sec max on there... but normally ur speed depends on other peoples connection, the more seeders and leechers there are the faster it is. if ur downloading from one seeder then u might have to wait a bit.

Providing there are enough seeds I can get up to 800kb/s - more commonly though it hovers around 200 to 350kb/s. Far better than when I was on BT which never really went above 40kb/s. Good old Orange :)

It absolutely is illegal. You can watch movies on cable too, and obviously it's illegal to download them on bittorrent as well. However, since copywrite law is a form of capitalist exploitation, it could be argued that in most capitalist societies there is a big difference between what is illegal and what is ethically wrong.

another catch: even though downloading is legal in many countries (most of western europe?) uploading is not -- and by design, bittorrent automatically uploads while you're downloading.
