Firewall Blocks Play

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Firewall Blocks Play

Hi,

I have a friend who's in Uni. He wants to play warcraft but his firewall wont let him and the people in charge wont add warcraft to the exceptions.

Is there anyway for him to play? He said he's been using something called yourfreedom but its now not working any more.

Does anyone here know of a way he can get past his firewall to play warcraft?

Thanks,
Matthew

If the people who own the equipment say he can't, it would be tantamount to hacking for us to tell him how to get around it. He really does need to convince the people who own the equipment or live without it.

Yeah, its a bit of a bugger... Could he arrange a fee with them or anything?

Other than that, it's a case of 'what they say, goes...'

Dabz

shouldn't he be studying? ;-p

Ah well, he probably plays the game too much anyway so I guess they're doing him a favour really :P

Kinda. He can set up a VPN tunnel to a computer outside the firewall. He'll then be able to play through the outside computers Internet connection. Works at our Uni.

Unless they also block VPN, or their router doesn't support VPN-passthrough.

Still: If they block the warcraft/BattleLan ports, they likely also have a ToS in place prohibiting such things... While the VPN might 'work', they could still disconnect him for violating the acceptable use policies for the network.

some places explicitely prohibit outgoing VPN's because it opens the network to potential attacks from the outside world.
