Okay, so I had the bright idea to try using Word 2007 to write something of importance.
It was a good idea at first. The word processor has a very neat design, and it has lots of nice features like the much-needed Math stuff.
All was going well and I was nearly done, at which point I decided to change my filename from "Dylan is challenged.docx" (don't ask) to "Assignment.docx".
Apparently, that was a very bad idea.
*BLANG* Could not save. (I forget why, but presumably it wasn't a good reason...).
Tried again, still no. Okay, I'd better just save as before. Nope. Saving was now impossible.
Of interest, though, was that it now insisted to create a document called Rescue.atx (sorry, I may have that extension wrong), as though it had just lost something. Okay... I guess it can do that. It does it. (Weird!).
Still, I can't save my files any other way. "Alright, I decide -- I'll restart Word!"
First I looked at my desktop, and, yes, that file which it claimed to be unable to save did appear there!
Well, that's good, I thought. I closed Word, with the expectation to then be able to open that file and edit it as though nothing bad had happened.
No such luck. Upon closing Word, that file on my desktop disappeared. Yes, Word got it into its head that it should DELETE the file which it thought it couldn't save.
Cover up the evidence, I guess, so I don't notice that it was wrong about its own stupidity.
I finally found that Rescue.atx file. Triumphantly, I moved it to a happier place. So far, so good.
Wait a minute... there aren't any programs associated with this file type!
I try it anyway; I open Word, then try to open the file (via Word).
"Word cannot open this file because it is an unsupported document type".
If this is true, then Word has actually created a file (A rescue file, at that) which it, itself, cannot understand.
What program would be so crazy as to write in a language it doesn't understand?!
A program out for revenge, that's what.
I then decided to rename it to Rescue.docx in a witty attempt to "trick" Word into opening my file. This should do it, right? -No.
"The program you used to create this object is Package. That program is not installed on your computer. To edit this object, you must install a program that can open the object."
Yes, it is confirmed; Word conjured this "Package" program out of thin air, then forgot about it. Or maybe it just botched up my file and it doesn't want to admit it, so it blames it on another poor unsuspecting program.
Further weirdness!
I then opened up good old OpenOffice.org 2. It probably doesn't support Word 2007 yet, but it's worth a shot. Yep, it opens it. It doesn't open it well, though; all the Math stuff is gone and the formatting has been slaughtered. This does confirm, though, that what I am opening is, in fact, the document and that document does contain all of my data from start to finish.
Note: This isn't my computer. I don't actually know how my friend got his hands on Office 2007 (I guess it's a public final release candidate? He says it's final... I removed mine a while back and lost track of all that).
The point of this all: My file has been slaughtered, and it needs to be rescued.
Any ideas?

It says, quite helpfully:
"A file error has occurred". That is all.
This is followed by another message:
"Word encountered a problem while trying to save the document. Do you want Word to save the document as “C:\Documents and Settings\Dylan\Application Data 2\Rescue1.asd” and mark the file to be recovered the next time it is opened?"
Oh, and that file extension is .asd. I don't know how I screwed that up.
It still is a mess, though!
At this point (with a new file) I actually cannot save it anywhere. I have lost my file even though it is sitting right in front of me :(
